i honestly dont see how anyone on here is an asshole... i just dont get what chris and sanuke are talking about... and with the 'how to eat out your gf' and 'how do you wipe your asshole' threads, its not like they were put in bags and equipment or anything... they were put in the kicking circle for crying out loud... a forum dedicated to anything NOT FOOBAG RELATED i just dont get what the big deal is... can someone help me with understanding it?

Interesting discussion, although I'm a little confused about the topic.

I think it's really about context and cultural differences.

I think it's pretty obvious that American culture is different to other cultures, just like Australian culture is, or British culture is. Of course there are plenty of exceptions and subcultures, but if we're going to talk about 200,000,000 people, you have to expect generalisations.

One of the big differences I've noticed between Americans and Australians is that typically an Australian will never tell you how good they are at something. They'll often tell you of actual events that demonstrate how good they are at something, but they would rarely say something like "I'm the smartest person I know," unless it's really obvious. In fact in conversation, if you said something like that in Australia, people would almost certainly think you're making a joke.

My impression from Americans is that in America it's cool to talk yourself up, and people do it all the time. Australians think that this is rude or arrogant, but you could equally call it honest and argue that recognising success and self confidence leads to higher levels of success. Australians certainly suffer from "tall poppy syndrome" a lot more than Americans (as in we're more likely to attack people who are successful).

As I said, there are plenty of exceptions, but I think the perception of another culture really depends on your own culture.

That's certainly true. I watch American sitcoms with laugh tracks occasionally and never understand why people are laughing. American stand up is the same.

Equally, Americans often don't get Australian jokes, or when they do, they repeat the joke, as if that somehow makes it funnier.

Any American sitcom you watch that has a laugh track almost certainly isn't funny. 99% of sitcoms aren't any good.

I personally love America. I would rather live here than anywhere all. Call it Nationalism for all I care. I love our arrogance. I love our can do attitude. Our confidence amazes me, and I'm glad it has rubbed off on me. Yes we fuck up a lot. We don't take our responsibility as seriously as we should sometimes. All this contributes to the overall attitude that I have come to love about or national character. And I know this is something that's oversaid, but if you really dislike the people in our country that much, then you honestly can go ahead and leave. I understand that economic considerations involved, but other than that, there are no societal factors barring you, since you seem to despise the society you are a part of. I'm not sure what you do for a living, but I bet you could do it somewhere else, and not be missed from the great motionful, ever changing mass that is our country.

There are arseholes in every country. If you have 100 Americans posting, 50 Canadians posting, and 10 Australians posting (this is just an example), then odds are there are going to be significantly more Americans posting like arseholes than Canadians, and more Canadians posting like arseholes than Australians.

I read the first post then skimmed past the rest of the posts. My impression on Chris' topic: This is such a broad generalisation it's funny. You've got assholes everywhere: in the US, in Canada, in Australia and yes, a sizeable amount in Europe too (I personnaly know many). My own observations lead me to beleive that the proportion of arseholes is pretty uniform everywhere.

Think about it.

I don't think being so condescending will succeed in making Chris Calm down. In fact it will probably have the opposite effect. Maybe that's actually what you wanted? Posts like that (and some of the other ones in this topic) would probably strength Chris' beliefs, not weaken them.

Not that I think you're an "asshole" at all, I just wonder if you considered the consequences of posts like that.

Jeremy, I am actually a total asshole, I just post nice things most the time because that's what I feel would be more beneficial.

Also, yes my post may spark some emotion, my intent was to show him that what he feels is a problem of everyone else is mostly something stemmed from within him. If he feels tension between himself and every other shredder, but no other shredders feel this tension between themselves, perhaps he's the source? That was my conclusion.

And like.. I don't even really have anything against Chris or anyone. I find it very difficult to get mad at people for long enough to post something really mean.
