"ignore this user" option?

Post by mc »

folks upstairs,

is this possible? is this option available to us on this type of forum? There are certain posters that I find obnoxious, absurd, and unsilencable, and it would be so sweet if we could just clickity click a litte button and not have to read their posts any more. I think it could really help end a lot of flame wars if everyone realized they could just tune out the obnoxiousness instead of getting caught up.

What about quotes from people, quoting the person you don't want to read ?

I've asked for this before. I think it's a great idea. We called it "kill-filtering" in my USENET days... you know, newsgroups.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if the message board software has the capability.

Back when you kill filtered on USENET you would still see this. Nothing you can really do, but having the filters sift out the original message was still a huge help to the signal to noise ratio.

boy oh boy would i like to see this implemented, thanks ville!! I think this could do a LOT to disempower the most notorious trolls on this site. Stands to reason that a disempowered troll becomes a frustrated troll, and a frustrated troll becomes a disappearing troll.

From "BenRea and JRstubs" thread:
Every once in awhile on modified people just go through spurts of being complete queers. Usually it is the product of a few big queers going around inciting other people to act like queers. Said inciting queers who prove themselves repeat offenders should be banned outright, first for a couple of months, and then upon coming back and still being queers, banned forever.

The whole community always comes together in times like thiscomes and talks about "Oh boy, maybe if we did this, maybe if we added an 'Ignore' button everything would change." No. People would not ignore trolls because they'd want to see what the fuss is about, even if they'd rather see them gone. It's human nature. It wouldn't work. The only thing that would work is severe punishments. I don't care what people think about what's fair or "constitutional". If you want what's best for modified, then actually do something concrete about it like banning the people who are fucking it up.

When will people learn that punishment isn't a bad thing? Actual punishment, not community inflcited punishment. Top down shit.

I'd use the ignore option, I've used it before on other forums and it was exactly the right thing to do. I'm sure that other people would too. Your argument that its human nature to want to see what trolls are posting is a little specious.

Lets just make a couple assumptions for argument's sake:

 I am being honest when I say I would use the ignore function, and so are other people who have said they would.
 Some people would not use it.

So there would be two groups of people, some who use it, some who don't. Those who don't use it, or some of those who don't use it, may still bitch about the trolls or get dragged into arguments with them, but the onus would be on them to do something about it, rather than beg the mods to intervene or start a bunch of threads bitching about it.

Everyone would know the option is available, and these complaints could be dismissed by saying "fine, you don't like them, ignore them."

I haven't been on Modified long, but has the ignore function ever been available? If not, then I don't think you should dismiss the idea. If it has been tried and didn't work, then you've got a point.

Either way, the mods aren't going to start banning people just because they are annoying or turn threads into total wastes of time. They have pretty strict ideas for why they ban people - you may agree with that framework or disagree with it, but it seems like its not gonna change.

To me, the ignore function seems like the ideal solution. Truly flagrant behavior can result in a ban, mere annoyance can be dealt with by each individual user choosing to ignore or not ignore a poster.

If some people choose not to use it and would rather continue to be annoyed, that's their problem. I would use it, I'm sure others would use it, and those who do would probably enjoy modified a lot more.

I'd use the ignore button.

I use it on Xbox live.

Ha. I'd love to see a flame war between a person I ingored and one I didn't ignore. Poor kid would look like (s)he is arguing with his/her self. :P

Dude, that's the point. You thrive on people paying attention to your bullshit.

And people seem to enjoy paying attention to my bullshit (As you've pointed out) so it works. You try to get people to pay attention to your bullshit, and just get laughed at.

I don't care admitting than I'm arrogant and egocentric. I've lived enough and come out the other end, so I feel justifed. You're just a little girl. Stop being a baby.

...", said Matt Cross, and all was right with the World. For Matt 'Spider Monkey' Cross had never made a mistake in his whole life. And thus, everyone worshiped him in the land of footbag. Dude, I get it okay. It's kinda hard to shut up when you have 20 users flaming you.

Hahaha. The only reason I'm still talking to you Chris is because three people have told me how funny it is to see you get all worked up over me. And I'm a man of the people. First person to tell me to stop I'll end it.
