your opinion on global warming

Post by apoplectic »

IMHO i dont think global warming exists.well not in the way most people talk about it anyway.most people talk about it as man made.i dont.

the earth has undergone several warm periods during its life

the logging of forests causes CO2 levels to go up.this is bull crap!the oceans absorbs 60% of CO2,trees only do a small part

the magnetic poles are shifting, this causes the tectonic plate to shift, increasing volcanic activity, releasing much more CO2 than humans could

global warming bad?mabey not.all of major human advances have taken place during warm periods.more CO2 in the atmosphere would increase plant life(plants feed on CO2 )making more food for humanity

just my 2 cents on this issue

All you are accomplishing is demonstrating you've only heard one biased side of the discussion.

I don't know, I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve here. Are you looking for people to agree that it's all a lie so that you can keep being wasteful?

Bleh, grow up and observe the world around you.

The only time I've ever seen a publication eluding to anything other than global warming is real and a threat is had Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolee on the cover. I really doubt you'll ever see a scientific publication stating anything other than we are in trouble if we don't change something.

There's too many statistics for me to even list proving this. The spike in world population being directly proportional to the spike in average temperature of a controlled climate. The glaciers melting, causing less reflection of the suns rays, causing more heat, causing more glacial melting....you get the picture. The average consumption of fossil fuels in the world spiking. I'm sure there will be someone else more informed than I to lay down some facts.

But seriously, the only people out there whispering the false notions of global warming are either selling something or also believe Tupac and Elvis are alive and well recording their greatest albums ever together. Don't believe the hype.

A little lower on the Discussion page, Global Warming, the real threat to society.

The science behind global warming is pretty simple.

Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses undeniably catch more heat than nitrogen and ozone. It's a very easy experiment to carry out, simply have two airtight containers next to each other with thermometers inside. One with normal air and the other with CO2.

Human activity has caused CO2 emissions to increase dramatically.

Before humanity, carbon levels were essentially balanced. Sure they changed over thousands of years, but they changed slowly, and it's a negative feedback loop, the more they change in one direction, the stronger the forces pulling them back are.

Now while it's true that oceans do absorb large amounts of carbon, that doesn't stop large amounts from also going into the atmosphere. Trees, and fossil fuels are all made up from carbon that is essentially "locked up" - it's never going to get into the atmosphere. Now you may argue that trees do release their carbon into the atmosphere when they die, but while this is true, the trees are replaced by new trees that absorb that carbon. Forests and fossil fuels are large stores of carbon.

When they're cleared or used as fuel, they release large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, much of which is absorbed by the ocean, and much of which remains in the atmosphere. The science shows that since the industrial revolution, CO2 levels have increased globally by about 35%. That's 35% that is clearly caused by land clearing and fossil fuel usage. 35% increase that's caused by human activity.

Now as I said earlier, the science is pretty simple, the more carbon in the atmosphere the warmer the temperature. It is obvious, that no matter what global temperatures would be doing naturally, the fact that we've increased the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere means we've increased the temperature, and indeed the calculations based on how much we've increased the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere match the calculations of how much the temperature has risen.

This years IPCC report looked into the effects from natural causes for rising temperatures such as increased solar activity and natural greenhouse gas emissions, as well as human emissions, and found that the human emissions were far more significant.

There really is no doubt that global warming is happening, and it's happening because of human activities. In fact the only scientists denying that this is the case are scientists who are being paid by the oil industry to say that, and were also paid by the tobacco industry to claim that smoking doesn't cause cancer. They have no integrity and no credibility.

Your request for somebody to learn something would probably be more effective if you learnt how to write correctly.

You shouldn't, you should change it for yourself. It makes it look like you are uneducated and not worth listening to.

If you want people to believe that you are credible then start presenting yourself as such.

And for the record, Chris Miller isn't a 12 year-old idiot, he's a 30-something year-old idot.

Just because someone doesn't have the best grammar or spelling skills does not mean they are uneducated. The only people that would look at his post, and call him an uneducated idiot based off his grammar, would be ignorant people. And really, who fuckin' care what those people think? You've gotta be pretty shallow to rule out someone's ideas based off of the fact that their spelling/grammar isn't the greatest.

Lol gorilla.

But seriously, having correct grammar and spelling words correctly really does have a big impact on how people view you. I work in management and we get a fairly large number of resumes come in from people wanting jobs at my work. Even when we're not recruiting people, we get a few each week. It's my job to go through those and decide who gets a job interview and who doesn't. I can guarantee that anybody who has noticeably bad spelling or grammar does not get an interview. Sure we all make mistakes, and I know my spelling and grammar is not perfect, but if all people can see of you is your written communications, how well you write really does effect how people perceive you.

Now Switch claims that only ignorant people would call somebody "uneducated" because of their grammar, but what I learnt in school, and what I've learnt at work is that using correct grammar and spelling really shows how much a person cares about how they're perceived and how much thought and effort they put into their work. A person who writes something full of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes may be incredibly intelligent and well educated. They may be able to easily correct all their errors. I would say that if that's the case, the fact that they made those errors is even worse, because rather than saying that their ignorant, it says they don't care about what they're writing.

If they don't care what they've written, why should I care? If they're trying to convince me that they're right for a job or that global warming doesn't exist or that nemesis is a cool move, but they don't care about how they've written what they've written, do they really care about the issue? If they can't make the effort to follow the standard and accepted way of communicating, I'm going to judge them on that. I'm going to think that either they're ignorant, and they don't know how important presentation is, or I'm going to think that they don't care about what they're presenting. Either way, it gives me a strong impression that their argument is not a good one, and it's very unlikely it will sway my opinion at all.

You're entitled to your own opinions of course. If you want to respect people who don't care or don't know how to communicate correctly, go ahead. Make your own judgement. I know I have.

This thread seems fresh about this topic.

I was wondering about the new efficient lightbulbs that some people want all of us to use.

Is it true that they contain mercury?

I read about a woman who had a bulb broken in her house, and then had to seal off the room, until an expensive clean-up job can be done (or afforded).

Is it over-reacting to do a clean-up like that, just from one bulb?

AND
Do the new bulbs contain more mercury than the old fashioned 3 to 4ft. long flourescent bulbs?

The new bulbs you are referring to are called CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs), and yes, they do contain mercury. The amount of mercury they contain per bulb, is less than the amount of mercury that a regular (incandescent) lightbulb factory pollutes per bulb manufactured. So in the case of CFLs, the mercury is in the bulb itself, while with incandescents the mercury is emitted from the factory. In total, the CFLs pollute less mercury.

As for the clean up story, it sounds like an overreaction. But in the news world, stories of people doing stupid things (suing mcDonalds for millions for spilling hot coffee on yourself, burglars suing homeowners when they cut themselves while breaking in, etc) appear in the paper all the time.
