Post by Kyle Hewitt »

Hey modified!

I'm doing a persuasive speech on Euthanasia.... and I want to know what everyone thinks about this topic. If you could also post (crediable) website that have something to do with Euthanasia I would love that!

Thanks guys!

I think it's OK as long as there are solid guidelines. We have the RIGHT to LIFE, LIBERTY and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS and as a corollary the right to not pursue unhappiness. Futhermore life and liberty are rights and we have should have the conscious decision to waive those rights if we so choose. Hell, we're constantly given the option of waiving our liberties these days, you see it all the time. I hope you follow my logic.

So IMO if you are in unbearable pain that is incurable and wish to die you are essentially exercising the corollary to the pursuit of happiness, that is you no longer wish to pursue UNhappiness. You are waiving your right to life. That's the only situation I could see a person having a legitimate request.

Another situation is a person who is so incapacitated that they can't make the conscious decision themselves, then their estate should decide. Somoene in a vegetative state with no hope of recovery who is running up medical bills, is there a point to keep them alive other than the sake of preserving life at any cost? They are essentially no longer pursuing happiness, only pursuing staying technically alive. I see no value there, I think that's an OK request.

IMO then in the American legal system, who has the ultimate authority to grant permission to a person who wishes to die? Is it the state? The federal government? The surgeon general? In the case of an incapacitated person, if their estate requests it, who grants permission, state or federal government?

A great movie I saw some time ago which would be a good reference is "Whose Life Is It Anyway" starring Richard Dreyfus:

It's about a guy who gets in an accident and is paralyzed. It really puts you in his shoes. Go see it.

i'm only bringing this topic back up because i just saw a new movie that has similar problem - it's called Sublime and it's a straight to DVD movie - basically this guy has to go in for a simple medical procedure but something goes wrong and he goes into a vegitative state, but not in his mind, in his mind he's in basically a living hell. it's a good movie but pretty weird at times.

but yeah, i too agree with euthenasia under certain conditions, i.e. the ones listed above

I gave a pro-euthanasia persuasive speech last year. Not euthanasia in general, but for all people age 65+. I talked about how bad people are treated in nursing homes (sometimes) and how draining they are to our economy. I made several other points, most were purely factual and not emotionally based. I think the best part of my speech was that I acted like I totally and completely believed that everyone 65+ should be put to sleep. :o In general, if you seem like you really believe in the topic, it'll come across a lot better even if people disagree with you. That was it's not that they disagree with you and think you're fake.

In my opinion Sublime wasn't a great movie, and didn't deal with euthanasia very much/well. DEFINITELY see "The Sea Inside" which deals directly with euthanasia. It's about a man who is paralyzed, brilliant, and wants to die.

Peter Singer would be a great person to read and I'm sure you've seen this website;

http://www.euthanasia.com/

I find it hard to understand how any non superstitious person could oppose euthanasia.

If I'm ever a vegetable, or so old I can't get up to go to the bathroom anymore, I want someone to blow my fucking brains out. (Assuming I'm too incompetent to do that myself.)

Although, a nice morphine overdose might be a little less dramatic and messy.
