Is Australia Better than America?
Depends from what perspective you look at the numbers :Switch Kicker wrote: That's bullshit. Yeah, there's been 25,000 wounded. However they cleverly put in "Dead or Wounded" with the Dead in front. First response to an average reader is, "25k dead!?" No... 3,500 dead, and alot more wounded. This war is not THAT bad, for christ sake. I mean yeah, it's the most pointless war ever, but it's no where near as bad as any of our past major wars.
different sources estimate the number of iraqi civilians killed since 2003 between 50 000 and 100 000. (http://www.iraqbodycount.org/)
US soldiers killed : around 3800 (http://www.antiwar.com/casualties/)(htt ... om/fallen/)
not counting the casualties of all the other troops.
9/11 attacks deaths : 3000
so in number of deaths, war in iraq = between 18 and 35 times 9/11 attacks..

Yeah, no doubt. What money are you talking about? Where? I'd like to see it. America isn't exactly in debt. We're just making a lot less than what we're spending. Soon we'll be really screwed though.
Not to mention nukes wouldn't solve anything, especially considering the fact that Putin is threatening to basically start another cold war because of the US' plans of creating that global missile defense system.

Yeah. Don't your read the news? It was on CNN home page, StarTribune, NYTimes...Colin wrote:Does this part still make sense?Switch Kicker wrote:Not to mention nukes wouldn't solve anything, especially considering the fact that Putin is threatening to basically start another cold war because of the US' plans of creating that global missile defense system.
Putin's threatening to end compliance with several treaties, because they feel the US' missle defense system will limit Russia's ability to defend itself if the US were to try and take over. Which I think is just impractical and highly unlikely. The US doesn't invade modernized civilizations just for the hell of it. Russia's been developing new missles with 3 warheads on them and what not in retaliation against the US' plans to put up the global missile defense system. Apparently we're establishing one in Asia somewhere. Forgot which country. It's obviously meant to help keep N. Korea at bay, but Putin's being really ignorant about the whole thing...

Russia develops new weapons in response to America developing new weapons, and you name Russia the instigator because ... ?

yeah i didnt believe that a few years ago either.
I said, MODERNIZED. Iraq is FAR from being considered a modernized country. They wipe their ass with their left hand for Christ's sake.

Maybe you should go ahead and do that.Switch Kicker wrote:if you still don't get it, I'll point out specifics.

America's not developing a new weapon. The global missile defense system is, exactly what it says. A defense system. It's not a weapon, it's a shield.Colin wrote:Russia develops new weapons in response to America developing new weapons, and you name Russia the instigator because ... ?
Russia's response is just sheer mistrust, and I think it's stupid. Or maybe just an excuse to get rilled up.
If we're developing this defense system for any reason, it's in retaliation against N. Korea's testing of nuclear devices. We don't have any problems with Russia, and now Putin's (Deliberately, I think anyway.) getting all worked up over it. Like it's some big deal.
I mean, no one can launch missiles hostilely at anyone else because of this defense system. Except for the US. Which does make it kind of unfair. But honestly, there's no fucking way Congress will EVER authorize use of nuclear devices for ANYTHING, EVER. There's no possible way 535 people are all going to be psychotic on the same day and vote to use nuclear devices to take over Russia, or the UK, or something completely bizarre like that.

Who Lost Russia?
by Patrick J. Buchanan
Posted: 06/05/2007
excerpt:
(....)
We appear to be headed for a second Cold War -- and, if we are, responsibility will not fully rest with the Kremlin. For among those who have mismanaged the relationship are presidents Clinton and Bush II, the baby boomers who appear to have kicked away the fruits of a Cold War victory won by their Greatest Generation predecessors.
How did they do it?
-- When the Red Army went home from Eastern Europe, the United States, in violation of an understanding with Moscow, began to move NATO east. We have since brought into our military alliance six former members of the Warsaw Pact and three former provinces of the Soviet Union: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
-- Anti-Russia hawks are now pushing to bring Ukraine and Georgia into NATO. If they succeed, we could be dragged into future confrontations with a nuclear-armed Russia about who has sovereignty over the Crimea and whether South Ossetia should be part of Georgia.
Are these vital U.S. interests worth risking a war? Why are we moving a U.S.-led military alliance into the front yard and onto the side porch of a country with thousands of nuclear weapons? Would we accept any commensurate Chinese or Russian move in the Caribbean?
-- After Moscow gave us a green light to use the former Soviet republics of Central Asia to base U.S. forces for the Afghan war, the United States has sought permanent bases there. Russia and China have now united to throw us out of their back yard.
-- America colluded with Azerbaijan and Georgia to build a Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan pipeline to transmit Caspian Sea oil across the Caucasus to the Black Sea and Turkey, cutting Russia out of the action.
-- In 1999, the United States bombed Serbia 78 days to punish her for fighting to hold her cradle province of Kosovo, which Muslim Albanians were tearing away. Orthodox Russia had long seen herself as protectress of the Balkan Slavs. That Clinton ignored Russia in launching this unprovoked war on Serbia was seen in Moscow as proof that Russian concerns had become irrelevant in Washington.
-- After helping dump over the government in Belgrade, our Neocomintern -- the National Endowment for Democracy, Freedom House and other fronts -- interfered in Ukraine and Georgia, helping oust pro-Moscow regimes and install pro-American ones. Since then, NED has been run out of Belarus and its subsidiaries are about to get the boot from Moscow.
Can we blame the Russians for being angry? How would we react to left-wing NGOs in Washington, flush with Moscow oil money, aiding elements hostile to the Bush administration?
-- The United States has been constantly hectoring Russia on backsliding from democracy. But compared to Beijing, Moscow is Montpelier, Vt. And why, if the Cold War is over, are Russia's political arrangements any of our business?

Right now the US has the ability to nuke Russia. However Russia feels safe because it has the ability to nuke the US. Neither country will drop a bomb because if they do, they'll get bombed back, and who wants their country to be nuked?
However if the missile defence shield is built, and is effective then the US will have the ability to nuke Russia, but Russia will not have the ability to nuke the US. This would completely change the relationship between Russia and the US, and I'm sure you can understand why Russia would not feel comfortable about this. If Russia wants to maintain the nuclear weapon equilibrium they currently have with the US they need to develop new weapons which won't be stopped by the missile defence shield.
