Oh man, I remember seeing Andrew McCargar footage way back in, like, 2001/2002 from Germany... I think I used to talk to him on AIM when he was there, actually. Cool.

Training events sound cool.
What an awesome scene.
I wonder if James Ericson(?) (is that his name? Nate's friend...) still plays.

Hey Portland, thanks for hosting me on Sunday. The shred was awesome, despite this omnipresent Oregon rain. The 32 I got from Nick is pretty sweet, by far the best color scheme I've seen on any 32. It doesn't play half-bad either :). When looking into grad school, I'll definitely have to consider proximity to sole purpose when I make my decision. Sorry I can't make it to U.S. Open or folklife this year, but sometimes it's like that. The Sole Purpose website it killer, btw. Can't wait to see new developments.

Footbag Around Portland

Just some of our ventures in the Portland area of late. The first set of pics are some of the students in my footbag class.

Bobby is pretty naturally talented, but Devin has the fire. They are asking me about when they are getting their 'Strikers' shirts. I think I will offer them shirts if they all make it back next term, a good incentive for return!

And some pics from a school demo I performed at earlier in the week. This one really surprised me. The high school is on the far edge of Portland, in the boonies really. When I was invited out I expected four or five kickers (still a good number), but when I arrived there were about 14 or so people kicking in front of the school, some with rigged shoes. Mikey, the team leader has done a great job promoting to his classmates, we had a few show up in Portland today looking for a place to buy Lavers. Great job Mikey!

And finally, an indoor session we had a couple of weeks ago, and a month ago.

Today we another 35 or so person kick today (Sunday session), took pics on Stefan's camera, hope to process them shortly. A couple of shinning moments; Nick hit Paradox Whirr, and barely missed 69 to P. Whirr. Also a new player from a local high school name Micah hit the scene, he is built much like Landes, and seems to learn just as quick. We also got a call from Alex Bernstein (who is on the road right now). He has just hit his first 5 add, Tomahawk, after four months of playing. To date I haven't seen anyone learn as fast. Good stuff Alex!

And finally, one of our rockstar players and new inductee on the Sole Purpose sponsored team

We are gearing up for the Open, it will really be just as much for the local Kickers as it for the out-of-towners this year, and probably ever after. The event is keeping us busy, it's for a good cause though, we have to get that US Champion crowned before Worlds this year. There are a few other projects that will go live before the end of the year, very exciting for footbag right now!

Has been a long week for Sole Purpose, but very good, a packed schedule.

Monday:
-HB Lee Middle School; end of year footbag class wrapup
-Meeting with Portland Business Bureau in regards to group/specific project

Tuesday:
-Glencoe High School; demo, special thanks to Nick Landes riding shotgun

Weds:
-PSU College group meet

Thursday:
-MLC High school; Demo/workshops, special thanks to Jake Wren for riding shotgun

Sunday:
Farewell session for Stefan at Pioneer Square

In the fall we will be working with another local high school on a project I am excited about; the faculty would like a credited footbag class to be offered to the students. This has potential to grow, if time allows, I may be interested in teaching a video editing class as well under the Sole Purpose/Fourkast title, as well as a juggling/creative motion arts class. The credited footbag class is a good start however.

It was nice watching Jake and Nick interacting with the students. Both are pretty gifted at working with kids, Jake is in school to teach metal work, while Nick plans eventually to return to college to teach mathematics. Nick is a better teacher of footbag than I, and Jake really connects with the students. Even had Brian Cooper make a special guest appearance at a class a couple of weeks ago, as always he was quite positive.

Lastly, a new freestyler named Brian has moved to town, at present I don't know much about him other than he will be attending culenary school and has Lavers. A couple of other new players just picked up Lavers as well, it should really help their games.

The Open continues to evolve, it is being promoted in the area, and should be a great recruiting tool for Sole Purpose and the footbag in general!

Sunday June 17th 2007

This was an unexpected day. With Father's Day, and Pioneer Square being full of flowers from the Festival of Flowers, I did not expect the turn out that in fact happened. This was Stefan Siegert's last official shred day (though we will have a for-the-homies ceremonial shred at the Water Temple on Weds). I have been under the weather for a little while now and only sent out one email, but the results were far beyond expectations. Attendance was around 25 people. We also welcomed a few new players aboard, and a few recently obtained Lavers. Unfortunately, not estimating the turnout, I did not bring a decent camera, so all pics are from the ol' cell phone, and taken somewhat randomly. Other pics include some of the school work we did this week, though I didn't get a chance to take as many pictures as I would have liked.

...where they wrap up your food to go in interesting shapes, I got a scorpion, which was nice, earlier that day I hit Ducking Scorpion Tail into a combo, guess that was the reward.

Stefan leaves at the end of the week, and we have one more informal jam with him. He will be missed by Sole Purpose!

As for me...

I have been working a lot as of late (they always seem to make me work on Wednesday, which is our kicking day... really pisses me off)

I have bad news and I have great news...

The bad news is that I won't get to see Stephan before he leaves because of my work, but I figure that he will read this sooner or later, so I wanted to say that he is an amazing person. Over the past few months of hanging out and shredding with Stephan, I can remember lots of great sessions, fun parties, and even a few times where both intertwined at jams. I'll miss you Stephan, and I hope to see you soon.

The great news:
For my 20th birthday (last friday) my parents gave me the most amazing present ever... an all expense paid trip to Disney World for the entire world footbag championship. Hotel reservations, round trip airfair, registration fees, and even a gift card for food and anything else that I want while I'm down there is now covered. All I can say is that, if you don't know me, then you'll be surprised at worlds, and if you do know me, then you'll be even more surprised.

You're going?! Sweet! It's been too long since the pajammy jam. Oh, and my shred 30 score is top secret until worlds (or the USO, but I'll probibly up the difficulty by worlds from that score since I have a month of practice)

Hadn't thought of it until now, but figured it would be good to show a roster of some of the people in the group (those I have pictures of). After the Open, I hope to include some new ones.

Sunday 29th

Four new players with modified shoes/Laver and shorts came out to kick today, mostly from schools around the area. We welcome
Matt, Mike, Steven, and Tristan to the group. They are all around 17 years old. Had a mirage workshop with them, 3 out of 4 hit it by the end of the session. The group continues to grow, we are in a somewhat new state; more than half the group is now new younger players, newbies essentially. Players I considered new (Nick, Brian, Jake) now have become teachers by default, many of the kids look up to Nick for sure, he plays the role well. A day earlier we performed a gig for John Stalberger at a company retreat, it was very successful, the audience of about 250 was cheering by the end of the show. Again, Nick is becoming quite the showman, it is good practice for Worlds.

I am very happy with the state of the group, I here one of our members (Andrew McCargar) is quite active in Europe right now. Can't wait to have him back home! It is my optimism that the growth we have seen here can and is happening elsewhere in the country. Montana still sports a well organized group (respect), Seattle is on the rebound right now, and Boise has the Freedom posse and friends. SF will always have a strong organizational group, would like to see more young players getting involved and being vocal about BAFL, which was once the capital of footbag during it's 'golden years' in the nineties. I here the east coast has dipped a bit, and LA does not have a strong center at the moment. San Diego still has a posse, and Chicago is still going with the Christmas Jam (which is a great idea, we haven't had one since Flint Michigan). Rebuilding organized groups promoting in LA, Colorado, and the east coast is very important I believe. Promotion definitely takes work though, it's not always easy and varies heavily on the location. Each place has had a strong group at one time or another though, so there is evidence that it can happen again. Promotion is as important as simply playing I believe. Not only can it bring in more people to kick with, but helps secure the future of the sport in the region. Just getting out and being seen, as well as distributing information and encouraging new prospects simply can make a difference. I look forward to making it to Worlds and meeting new players, who I respect as the future and continuation of our sport.

Been a while since I have posted, it's been pretty busy after Worlds, in and out of town mostly. The Beaver Open camping trip was great, they really have their event perfected after 27 years. It's unlike any other footbag gig I have even been to. Helps it is in a renaissance fairground area, very trippy. It's also one of those events you can only partially explain, it really has to be experienced. It's certainly one of my favorite footbag events, mainly because it is so different. We also attended the Shred Idaho 2007 event, it was a great deal of fun, always good kicking with the Freedom crew. We had a pair of great sessions on Monday after everyone left that included mystery guest Zach Jahner, who kicked great that night (nice Alpine Blurry Whirl). In between Worlds, the Beaver Open, and Idaho we have been pretty busy, have been interacting with Chris Ott on a few things, we had a good meeting at the Beaver Open. He is a true visionary, much like John Stalberger.

One more recent project has finally been set in motion that I am happy about; Sole Purpose is connecting to the Boys and Girls Club of Portland essentially. I am being paid now to teach an ongoing footbag class at their club in SE Portland throughout the week, as long as I choose to continue the program. When they contacted me initially, I was a bit surprised and delighted to see that they were so interested in footbag, I listed most of my talents and this one was the one they mentioned more than a few times. I will be initially on staff teaching a footbag class once a week, probably have it run a month, take a two or three week break, then start it again. In the meantime, I will offer other things such as a juggling class, help with a poi class (already in progress), teach digital arts, and run a chess class. In time we may take the kids out for a disc golf program. The arrangement works out well, I was searching for an outlet that would be excited to showcase these things, they were looking for a person or people to bring interesting things in. I will probably do a bit of cross promotion with the Boys and Girls Club and Sole Purpose, which includes going out to schools and promoting our agenda. Very exciting, I will bring in other players/performers in the group as special guests, it should be a colorful experience for the kids. A nice side note about the facility I will be teach at; they hosted the prelims for freestyle at Worlds 1997. The same gym that I will be holding footbag class is where Ryan Mulroney hit his classic dropless routine that put him into finals that year. It was also my first Worlds, a nice full circle I guess. One of the kids at the club asked me today if I had seen the players downtown with the purple jerseys, I thought that was nice.

Teaching a couple of days a week will fit nicely into my schedule, it lines up very well with a few other things we are working on. Tomorrow we have two footbag gigs, one for a local school, the other for PSU (club sports day). Nick is still in Idaho, so it may be Jake and I. A few new people just joined the group, as we going into fall and winter our numbers usually dip down, but if we can maintain the same attendance as last winter (Sole Purpose's best winter to date) things should continue to run smooth. Props to Nick for the weird and wild stuff he hit in Idaho, especially one set I think will open a lot of doors to a great many things. He does Portland proud!

Sole Purpose welcomes two new players;

Image
Jarret Brown

Image
Tony Skrivanek

Jarret has been kicking with the group for a few months, but of recent has stepped up his game and is hammering out his fundamentals (twos essentially).

Tony recently moved to Portland, and is actually from another footbag posse, the Cloud 9 group from Minnesota. This was a crew that consisted of one of my favorite players from that day; Juan Rangel. According to Tony, that group slowly dissipated (sadly Juan no longer plays), thus Tony became rusty, but is now pretty excited there are people for him to kick with again. Our first two sessions were good, he could still hit whirls, swirls, spinning butterflies, butterfly swirls, drifters, and all sorts of dragon moves. A good addition for sure. We welcome both players to the group!

On the flip side, two of our star players are injured, both in unpredicted ways. First, after shredding hard all week in Idaho, Nick Landes returned to Portland only to randomly roll his ankle walking down the street. If that wasn't strange enough, Jake Wren's story certainly trumps it.

We were all supposed to meet up last Weds. to kick as usual. Jake did not show up, so we figured he simply could not make it out and thought no more about it. I received a call two days later telling me he had been in an accident and had gone to the emergency room. Apparently, Jake had to skate across one of the bridges to get to our session downtown. While long boarding down the declining part of the bridge, Jake spotted a pedestrian walking several yards in front of him. The sidewalk on that bridge isn't too wide, thus Jake yelled to the person to look out essentially. Instead of moving aside, while Jake was skating by, the person pushed him, knocking him off his board and into the street. Jake had been moving pretty fast, thus the force of hitting the pavement knocked him unconscious. His girlfriend behind him witnessed the event, the paramedics were called, and he was taken to the hospital where he spend the day and night. He was released with four staples in his head, along with his face, arm, and shoulder ripped up. I still haven't heard what the outcome of the pedestrian was, he did not stay at the scene and as of a day ago has not been found yet. This was an unfortunate incident, especially in light of the fact Jake was on his way to kick, and that the perpetrator got away.

One thing I can say about Jake, his toughness matches his demeanor. He showed up at our session five days later and kicked, just to prove a point it seemed. He didn't remember much about what happened for about 16 hours after the accident, probably better that way. The staples did not look that bad actually, but again, the side of his face, arm and shoulder were gashed pretty badly. With repeat inquiries from the group, his answer mainly remained "it happens, let's play". He then went on to bsos fusion in a run, along with quite a few other things. So hats off to Jake Wren, one f'in tough freestyler.
