Diplomacy

Post by Caleb »

Have any of you played this board game before? We started it up at my workplace and it's pretty fun. It's basically just like Risk except it's only in Europe and everyone's units are equal in strength. This is where it gets fun. The only way to accomplish anything in the game is to negotiate, ally, and double cross the other players.

One move is done each day and the rest of the day is spent talking about the game, the next move, who to support, who to betray, etc.

It's really funny because everytime someone is in another person's office (you know.....to actually do work), we're all like "Something's happening between Italy and Germany. I wonder if they're going to make a move!" and go gossiping to our allies. We've already even had false gossip spread around the office through people that aren't even playing the game. Yeah, it's getting hardcore. There's no way anyone is getting work done anymore.

I know of this game. When I used to play a lot of Starcraft there was a Use Map Setting's game that I use to play all the time called Diplomacy modelled after the board game, and you'd take citie's by building a supply depot next to a beacon which in turn was a trigger that would give you Minerals. You could ally with other players and such and double cross and overall it was really fucking fun.

I've never played the board game but I've always wanted to. I use to play Axis and Allies CD-Rom version all the time though.

Do you have Starcraft Caleb?

I nearly came to blows with someone I had just met during my first (and last) game of diplomacy.

Great game!

So, basically with every territory you own that has a star on it, you get an army or Navy Fleet.

I am Germany. So my startegy in the interest of making it a fun game is to ally with England to ensure I don't get attacked and then send my troops north and combat Russia from gaining any easily accessible areas and supply depots (the stars) up yonder.

I think it would be easier to ally with France and pinch England off from most of the map but that will only force him to retreat north and eventually ally with the already too large Russia (who begins the game with 1 more army than everyone else). I'm mostly afraid of Russia since France and Italy won't be able to touch me and Austria (the center) will be occupied with the free depots to the south. Also Turkey (bottom right) shares an office with the dude that owns Russia. They own the entire east coast and you can't tell me they're not working together.

So we'll see what happens here. Thoughts and suggestions would be fun if you care.

[Moved to A&L since this is a thread about a board game]
