Hey Modified! I work at a national newspaper in Canada. I'm a graphic artist. That means I draw/produce maps, charts, illustrations, icons, diagrams and things like that.
Today I pitched a footbag graphic to my boss that would coincide with Worlds. She thought it was a good idea. Now I have to make the sucker! (assuming we can find an open-minded editor).
I have a few ideas for footbag graphics. Ie: laver mod tutorials, basic move diagrams, the perfect clipper position, jobs notation explainer etc... but I'm not sure that would be enough. Ideally, my graphic would have to fully explain what footbag is to the reader (who knows nothing, or worse, knows hacky sack), and should explain how competition works at the World championships. I want to keep it simple, yet a bit technical to show people just how far the sport has progressed beyond circle kicking. I'm sure my editor will want me to give it a Canadian angle as well, so part of the graphic could involve Jorden and his hopes for thie year.
So, I'm just wondering if anyone has some thoughts or suggestions before I get started - it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How about one of those flowing murals that incorperates several different scenes. The mural could be about the progression of footbag and start with two hippies kicking around a bean bag in a backyard, move onto circle kicking/dance, then shred, and end with vasek (or jorden) on a podium at the world championships with MILLIONS of spectators.

I don't know if it's possible to fully explain how a competition/the sport works in a graphic. Maybe the best thing to do is to choose a few big moves and present them in the same way that the Freedom Footbags Flyer has consecutive pictures of Penske. Under each Sick Trick could be its Jobs notation and a brief explanation in words of what is being done. Two or three complex moves -broken down for the layman- can give people an idea of the sport's variety and infinite trick possiblities, as well as the level of athleticism it takes.
It will be really difficult to capture the essence of footbag on a still graphic, but youre an excellent artist Mike. good luck

I don't know if it would be worthwhile to incorporate, but it would be neat to have, like, a picture of Vasek on a podium, or whatever, and maybe someone in the background with a "100th place" medal and then in another "shot" both of them hanging out having a drink or something... I think that would be a neat way of expressing the close-knitness of the community... but maybe that's not really relevant for a big newspaper thing that tries to capture the whole sport in a nutshell?
I'm really excited for this, Mike! You're so awesome!

I'm thinking it would be cool to divide the graphic into a few sections. 1. A rendering (maybe cutaway to show fillier) of a 32 next to a crochet bag and a golfball for scale. 2. A diagram of a footbag shoe w. modifications and explainers on what qualities the shoe requires. 3. As Chris said, some freedom-flier style renderings of some easy and complex moves with a simple explainer of ADDs, job notations, and more importantly a description of what is going on during each part of the move. 4. The different footbag competitons ie: shred30, routines, net etc.
I think I'll have to make a rough version to show you guys. I guess I want to prime people for footbag so they have a basic idea of what it is all about when they finally see it for real. Thanks for all the suggestions so far!
