Things are looking brighter, which I guess is ironic given that its pissing rain now.

I got an unexpected call from Luis from Cornell, saying he'll be in the area for about a week. He's been at my place for the last couple days, and I had a good time showing him around NYC yesterday. On Saturday I had an excellent shred in Washington Square Park. The weather was great, good turnout, and my body felt good. Most importantly, it calmed me down and took my mind off my recent troubles.

We had enough people for 2 circles at one point: Bruce, Katya, Stan, Waylon, Luis, myself, and a guy from Somerville named Aaron, who learned footbag thanks to Jon. I really enjoyed playing with Stan in WSP; it brought back lots of good memories. Stan has good style and still hits lots of stuff that I don't/can't. I think my fav all day was matador-flurry. Hot.

I mostly played for the crowds, but when there wasn't spectators I tried and hit some good combos and tricks.

Highlights:

*bl. whirl-flurry-darkwalk-bl. drifter
*bl. whirl-bl. whirl-blurriest-pdx torque-ps whirl
*spinning pdlo
*alpine spinal tap
*tombstone-flurry
*a run that began with Whirligig, then had mullet using the other ps whirl, then had food bsos, a blurry torque, and a darkwalk for good measure. Five unique sixes in a run has to be a record for me.
*starting a run in my circle, shredding my way to the other circle, beating Bruce in a "shred fight," shredding back to my original circle, and then passing before I could drop it. :P

I also hit a bunch of other tricks which used to be highlight worthy, but now I get often enough that I don't feel they're worth mentioning.

Towards the end of the session I noticed that there was a perfectly drawn foursquare court not 20 feet away from where we were shredding! 8O It was in chalk, but it was perfect dimensions with straight lines, and the kingsquare was even marked. Very weird. We took advantage of it and played 3 games which was a lot of fun.

Playing on concrete is tough on the soles of your feet. On Sunday my muscles felt pretty good, but my feet were angry with me. We may start playing at South Street Seaport in order to play on a better surface (wood).

There's a chance I'll get in a session on Wednesday with Luis and Pascal in NYC. It'll be like a Bear Feet reunion. :)

Getting into a bit of a groove at work which feels good. I’m also starting to forget about the disaster that was last semester, which is also probably healthy for me. Luis is in the NYC area for about a week which is a nice, unexpected surprise. He stayed at my place for a couple days which was cool; it kind of reduced that feel that weekdays are just a countdown to the weekend. Got back from work late on Monday and it was humid as hell, which means that under normal circumstances I would have just sat in front of the TV with a beer, ceiling fans (not me) on full power as I take notes on the show “Charm Schoolâ€

I think this whole "Wednesdays off from work" thing is going to make for a really good summer. I went into the city early yesterday, got lunch in Chinatown with Pascal and Luis, and then played footbag from 2pm to 8 pm. I slept over at Bruce's place and made it from Brooklyn to Newark in about an hour. Given that work starts at 10 am on Thursdays, I had plenty of time. Very cool.

The weather was absolutely perfect yesterday. Like, if I had to choose a day from the last 365 and make it the default, unchanging weather for the rest of my life, I would have likely chosen yesterday. It was cool out, but you could wear shorts and t-shirt comfortably. Footbagging in the sun was pleasant and warm, but not too hot, and if you played in the shade it wasn't too cold either. Just perfect.

That probably had a lot to do with me playing for over 6 hours. That's really crazy, especially given the fact that the floor in the city is so hard on my feet.

I played for the first 3 hours in Washington Square Park, with Luis, Pascal and Sebastien Peron, who randomly ran into us. He's an old net player, but was wearing lavers and could still do some good linking and tricks. His main thing these days is Miyachi, which is like footbag using the back of your hands. I had a lot of fun watching him demonstrate it, and I feel like I learned a lot by watching him "sell" the sport to anybody who even looked his way. The guy is a great promoter, and a natural salesman. Footbag could use more people like him to get the sport big.

Nothing too notable from this first session. For some reason I did a few reverse whirls, which really annoyed Pascal. He thinks they look super-ugly, and this motivated me to start doing them more, just to annoy him. :P I used to hate reverse whirls, but now they are kinda growing on me. Funny how that happens. At 5 pm we moved to Union Square to meet up with other footbaggers. The two parks have really different vibes. WSP is more laid back, as better shade, and just feels more relaxed and friendly. Union Square has good exposure due to more pedestrian traffic, but that also can screw things up, what with people walking through circles, etc. Some people defend USquare by saying there are lots more pretty girls, which is true, but all of them are just waiting for their boyfriends anyway.

We played a couple games of 4square, and then Pascal headed home. Soon thereafter, Waylon, Bruce, Ted F, and Josh Penny showed up. Ken David and Barret showed their faces too, but didn't play much and left very soon. I don't remember too much of the shred, but I felt like I played very well. Good stamina practice for Worlds (I should just buy the tickets this weekend and force myself to figure out the logistics after that). The highlight was probably playing in a circle with Josh Penney. The last time I saw him play was when I went to NYC last semester and rolled my ankle.

More later...

Yeah, posting in the blog from work is thrilling.

On wednesday I played over 6 hours on concrete, and my legs were feeling it for a few days. I'm about to head into the city today, so we'll see how my legs feel. My folks are in the area this weekend, so no footbag on Sunday for me. Probably good not to push it too much.

I'm bringing a CD of my routine song for Worlds, on the hope that Ted shows with his boombox. It would be really good for me to get in a couple attempts at my routine.

Lunch and footbag beckon. I really need to look into worlds tickets soon...

Today I hit WHAT!?! (the last exclamation mark was supposed to be actually one)

It's a really cool trick, the motion wasn't so bad, I was happy to find my legs doing a motion that seemed to feel like what it looks like when you do it.

I tried tapping WHAT!? and fell to the floor. :P Gnarly toe-to-toe!

Anyways, I was just posting to say that we (me, skippy and pengpeng) were thinking about you today.

Also, cool trick. 8)

Hello Ken

I watched overground today. You were in it. Few observations:

You were playing good footbag.
you were a bit taller back then due to your hairstyle.
Kenny Schults is a hairy man
Kenny Schults is a trendsetter when it comes to the wearing of caps.
Peter Irish had a bucket style haircut.
I thought the music was pretty good.
Yacine should make more films, was that his only film?
Greg Nelson likes osis alot.

Thankyou for your time.

While I'm here, I'd just like to apologize to everybody for being out of touch this past couple months. Finals during school pretty much killed me, and then I jumped immediately into moving and starting a new job. I don't have internet access at home, and I've been working really hard at my internship, so I haven't been able to respond to emails very well lately.

Thanks for the airfare tip; hopefully today I will look into flights to Worlds. It'd be nice to make my attendance official. If I go, it will be my 6th Worlds ever. In 2001 I couldn't go due to an internship, in 2002 I couldn't go because I was moving to Japan, and in 2006 I decided my summer and money would be better spent in Japan, and I think it was a great decision.

Had fun playing in WSP on Saturday. I warmed up slow, and my legs felt fine. Given how hard I played on Wednesday, this was a pleasant surprise. I think I should invest in a new pair of insoles soon. On Saturday there was a huge Hare Krishna festival going on in the park, and I was really amazed by how inconsiderate they were about other people's personal space. People would walk through the shred circle like they were in a daze. I used the experience as a way to improve my mental game. A few years ago I would have really lost my cool, but this time I managed to focus on playing, and not letting the idiots get to me.

Shredwise I don't recall hitting anything too good. When I play in public I definitely go for longer, more conservative strings. I've noticed that my flip atomic and flip pixies have suffered because of this. I should make a point to use them more so I don't lose them.

My shred highlight was when Bruce requested I hit vortex-whirling swirl, and I did! This combo is special to me, because back in the day it was considered one of the harder/stylier combos hit on a video. Josh Casey hit this way waaaay back on Raw Shred. Considering how both of these tricks are hard for me, it was cool to put them together. Bit of a minor oldschool milestone for me.

My folks came through town on Sunday, which meant I took the day off from shred. I think that was a good decision, given how hard I'd been pushing my body recently. The plan is to play in the city tomorrow, and then play on Sat and Sunday. I think that 3-4 sessions a week should be enough to keep me in good shape for worlds.

Mosher: props on WHAT?! I figured you'd be able to hit it, since it's just the opposite of a Moshing set, right? Show me at worlds. Better yet, show me Moshing WHAT?! at Worlds. That'd be crazy.

Nice part about my internship is that I get Wednesdays off, so I'm never more than 2 days away from a holiday. I really like this setup; I never have to get myself psyched for the coming week, because it'ss never that long. I've been doing a pretty fantastic job of cramming 2 days worth of weekend into every Wednesday too. This week I played a lot of footbag, but my legs survived it much better than last week.

The big news is that on Tuesday night I bought tickets to Worlds. $160 RT is pretty good. I arrive Monday night, August 13th, and leave the next Monday. Now I need to start training in earnest, and to get my lodging/transportation logistics sorted out.

Wednesday was one of the most jam-packed days of my life. I woke up at 6:30 am at my sister's house in central jersey, took a bus and a train home, showered and ate breakfast, put on a tie and went to work for an hour, came home, got my footbag gear, met Luis at the Newark train station, went to Somerville, met Toolan and Clavens, played footbag for a couple hours, trained to the city, played more footbag, and finally closed the day out with falafels, good beer, and Wii bowling at Bruce's place. I got tired just writing that sentence.

I didn't play well in either session, which is kind of a bummer because I don't get many chances to play with Dave, so I was hoping to play well. Its been a very warm summer so far, but for some reason it was downright chilly on Wednesday. It was the first day I've had this summer where I needed long pants and a long sleeved shirt. For shred I wore a t-shirt instead of an NBA jersey, and even then my hands and wrists were clammy throughout. I never felt like I broke a sweat or got warmed up, and I sometimes had to keep my hands under my armpits to warm them up. Really freaky weather for June. Just bad timing that it had to happen on my day off.

Even though I didn't play well, it was still an OK session because I got to watch Dave play, and I did a good job of keeping my mental game. I was really just disappointed in the weather and my crap circulation more than I was frustrated. In any case, I got some adds on the shoes, which should help me in the long haul.

I had never met Mike Toolan before, but I got a good vibe off him. He's a real quiet kid. He's only been playing something like 15 months, but he's already really good. Solid, both-sided foundation. Saw him get things like bl. Whirl x2, rubberman, phx both sides, torque-whirling swirl. He had one run with phx, ps whirl bsos, a bl. Whirl, and a blurry drifter. Impressive.

Luis played well initially, but then cooled off. I felt bad because it seemed like he didn't like the vibe in the circle. I never want to have the effect of bringing down a circle with negativity, but I'm sure he could tell that I was struggling. One good thing that came out of the session for me was having Dave call me on some tricks. There are a few sets and tricks that I suspected were the or slurry, but people in NYC couldn't/wouldn't call me on. It was nice to have a trained eye let me know what was clean and what wasn't. I'd much rather find out now, 2 months before worlds, than during the week itself. In some cases I was pleasantly surprised to learn that tricks were clean, and the stuff that I was called on, I suspected was dirty anyway.

The best part of the session for me was watching some of Dave's stuff. He was coming off an injury, and we had a bit of a scare early on, but I had the impression that he was playing pretty well for himself. He hit a few combos that had me yelling out loud. Some very good combinations of difficulty and style. I think he'd prefer to keep his stuff secret til worlds, so I won't mention any of it here. I think he's got a very good shot at podium in all the freestyle events. EDIT: 8 years later, I still remember him hitting nebula to atomic blender.

Hopefully I'll get to play with him and Toolan again sometime before worlds. It's a bit sad, but NYC and the PATH trains have really spoiled me. It takes me about the same amount of time to get from home to NYC as it does from home to Somerville (where we played), but the trip to Somerville is over $17 RT, while NYC is $3 RT and has better food. I'm also aware I've been spending a lot of money lately, what with rent, trips to the city, and tickets to Worlds.

The other down part to the session was that my best shred socks got a hole. It's the kind of thing that I can easily ignore if I'm playing well, but to have it happen during a session where I'm struggling is annoying. Still, it reminds me that I should buy new socks before worlds. I think its a good insurance policy to buy new socks before a tournament. In fact, the socks that broke were ones I bought right before Cornell Jam. 7 months is a pretty good run for socks.

Shred in the city was also tough. It was even cooler out, and of course my body was a bit tired. I had fun playing a more relaxing style, with lots of drunken style butterflies, reverse whirls, and muted ducking clippers. There were lots of shredders and hackey slackers out. After shred we all got falafels, and it was nice and kind of comforting getting food with Pascal and Luis after a shred. Reminded me of old times.

I should make a point to listen to my routine song everyday from now on. I did my first run through of it yesterday, and I realized that I really don't know the song well enough to predict pauses, etc. I also realized that some of my choreography doesn't work because the tricks take longer than I thought. It has potential though, and I have a feeling that I'm going to do better at routines this year than I have in the past. I just need to be diligent and put in the time.

Watched the NBA finals last night, even though I wasn't excited about it. I knew the Spurs would sweep, but I also realized that I wouldn't get to watch an NBA game until Halloween, so I should watch while I had the chance. Back in college the Mavericks were my team, so I was happy for Finley that he finally picked up a ring. I'm annoyed though that Bowen gets a ring, cause that guy just plays dirty basketball.

Now that school's out and the NBA season is over, hopefully I will focus more on footbag. I listened to my routine song a bunch last night, and I think it's a good plan to listen to it everyday until worlds. In past years, I've gone to Worlds with 2 songs, but I realize now it is better to have one song and one well-thought out, well-practice routine, than to show up with 2 songs and not have either routine well planned or practiced.

I really want to do a good routine at Worlds this year. I feel like in past years I had several objectives I wanted to do at once (get on a video, make finals in Shred30, play well in elite circles), so when I would accomplish 2 or 3 goals but not do that well in routines, it was OK. This year, I will try to really focus on routines. I'm going to enter Shred30 as well, but I'm not going to practice/stress over it. I took 4th in 2005, and am happy to rest on those laurels.

I have never done a dropless routine in my life. I want to change this at Worlds.

The best way to understand WHAT?! is to see it. I hit it in a few videos. Click on my signature; I'm pretty sure I hit pdx drifter-vortex-WHAT?! in the video, and later on I hit tapping WHAT?!? (southern cross).

Shred over the weekend was tough. Saturday I tried out some new insoles which really threw me off my game, and I also managed to tweak a muscle in my ass. Sunday was a very casual session with Barrett and Ian, and that was pleasant, but I had to go easy because of the tweak. I'm not used to having 2 "bad" sessions in a row, and it's got me a little nervous. I think I only need one good session to get me back on track.

The one promising thing that came from the weekend shreds was on Sunday when I asked Barrrett and Ian for requests. One of them requested I try spinning ducking, and after I protested that I really can't do them, I decided to try it. To my happy surprise, spinning ducking was very promising on one side! I managed to hit spinning ducking clipper/butterfly/osis, but my sets still aren't consistent. I had a couple goes which felt very very good, and others which were terrible. Still, I was very encouraged by my progress, especially given that it was my first day really working them.

I'll leave you with a cool video I found on Youtube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xhKT4FjUF8U

Body is still acting a little cranky. The tweaked muscle in my hip/ass hasn't disappeared, but also doesn't bother me too much. I'm going to continue stretching these next couple days, and take it easy with footbag.

Last night I had a light, 1 hour session. I took my time warming up with toe stalls and clippers, and I think it paid off. I played pretty lightly, and my legs felt a little tired, but my breathing was good and I enjoyed hitting some easy strings. In a pleasant surprise, I found that my flip pixies returned. One thing that helped me was to really just focus on doing the set, and then doing the downtime component once the set was over. I think i was kinda rushing the 2 together before, which was making the set less clean.

I also played around a bit with spinning ducking, and was happy to see it hadn't disappeared. It still needs work, but it shows some promise. I should try and hit spinning ducking eclipse. I wonder how many eclipse tricks I've hit.

I think I'll try for another light session today. I need to listen to my routine music more, and start practicing it. I need to get more excited for worlds too. I think its cool that it'll be so many people's first worlds: Chan, Suderman, Byrin, Landes, Luis, Yuko Abe, etc.

My summer internship involves organizing daylaborers. I'm tempted to use footbag as an icebreaker.

In a very pleasant and unexpected turn, my body feels pretty good. The reason this is surprising, is that my body was feeling kinda tweaky since about a week ago, and then on Thursday I spent a good 7 hours playing almost non-stop. I'm going to try to make my next few sessions pretty light, and then try and get back on track for building my stamina for worlds. On that note, I should also record that I've been pretty bad about listening to my routine music. Not having an iPod anymore, and working a ton will do that to you.

My schedule has been really strange lately. Normally, I have Wednesdays off, but this week a member of NYFA wanted to use me in a footbag promo video, so I asked for Thursday off instead. This meant that I got to the city on Wednesday night, showed my face at the normal wed night shred, spent all of Thursday filming, partied at Bruce's on Thursday night, and then went back to work on Friday morning. So Friday at work felt like a monday. To make things even weirder, I volunteered for work on Saturday morning, so even though I hung out with my sister tonight, and I have plans in the city tomorrow, I still need to dress up and go to work in the morning. Very weird.

Thursday was a really fantastic day, so it deserves a good blog entry. Its weird how when you have really good days, they leave you so tired that you dont have the time or energy to always properly record them in your blog or diary. But if I don't try now, I doubt it will happen at all.

I was pretty excited about Thursday because I knew it was going to be a pretty professional shoot, and so I had (have) high hopes for the final product. It will be cool to have a well-shot and edited video to promote footbag in NYC, but I'm also excited for personal reasons to have a well-made video of myself. I learned to play footbag in NYC, and I'm NYFA at heart, so there's sentimental value in having a video of me playing in Washington Square Park. So many memories.

I woke up feeling nervous about the shoot. I slept over in NYU dorms, and even though it was a Wednesday night, Barret's dorm-mates were partying loud and late. I don't function well with less than 8 hours of sleep, and I ended up with only 5.5. :? Rough. My stomach let me know it wanted more sleep, as I felt it flopping around for the first hour of the day. Waylon showed up early to help us carry the film equipment, which was ridiculously clunky and heavy. Super props to Waylon for helping out; he had a lot of the hardest and most boring tasks of the day: carrying equipment, and then watching over our stuff while we filmed. Looked shitty, but it needed to be done.

We hit WSP by 10 am (or was it 9?) and I warmed up slowly as Barrett discussed shots and logistics with the cameraman and the still photographer. Early on we picked a bag to use for the whole day, and we ended up going with my red and white Lesh bag. We picked it because its size and color made it the most visible bag, even though it is slightly too floppy for my taste on some bigger tricks. I'm amazed how playable it is though, given that I won it at the Rochester NYJ 18 months ago. One of my alltime best bags ever.

Shooting went well. The weather was absolutely perfect, and my body held up admirably. We got a lot of angles, and even used a wheelchair to get some dolly-shots. At times it was tedious, having to hit the same trick over and over again so we could get it from different angles. It reminded me of Milhouse playing Fallout Boy. Hopefully though, it will all pay off with a good looking final product. We were also lucky in that we had lots of good live music throughout the day, which definitely helped keep me going. There were also some fun breaks when I got to watch street performers or bands, and one part of the day when I got to ride around on a Segway. At first I felt silly like GOB on Arrested Development, but soon I was scooting around. It was really fun; I was impressed how easy and intuitive the controls were.

We finished up the shoot in Union Square, with the hope of getting some crowd reaction shots. Unfortunately, I was pretty tired by then, and playing solo on a weeknight without a radio made it even harder to draw and keep a crowd. I could also see the rest of the production crew was getting pretty burned out, so I just hit a few tricks and strings to give us some more footage to work with.

While we were shooting in Union Square, I thought I noticed a cute girl checking me out. She was wearing sunglasses though, so maybe she wasn't. In any case, I figured I had nothing to lose by going to talk to her, so when we were all packing up to leave, I went over, said hey, and set up a date for Saturday night. Score! If a girl sees that your hobby is kicking around a beanbag, and she STILL agrees to go out with you, that either means she's a keeper, desperate, or blind (that would explain the 8)). We'll see which it is on Saturday.

On that happy note, we all headed to a Thai place for dinner to celebrate the productive day of shooting. We all worked really hard, but I think we got a lot done. The food was really good, and not just because I hadn't eaten much all day. After dinner I went to Brooklyn and celebrated some more with my favorite local beer (Brooklyn Brown) and some Wii bowling. I set a new personal record: 167! What, I never said I was any good.

Hopefully I'll help Barrett log the footage soon, and the video will get done in the next month or so.

Life's been busy, which means I have a lot to blog about, but little time to do so. But overall things are going well. I'm working hard, but I'm not stressing. I'm playing lots of footbag. I see my friends a lot during the week. It's turning out to be a good summer.

Lately I feel like I haven't been getting many highlights in my shred, nor have I been working on new concepts. I'm OK with this, because I like to think that I'm working on making my current game more consistent and cleaner. Who knows if that's true, but it's a nice way to look at it. I do know that I hate playing on concrete, but that's the price I pay for playing in NYC with my friends, and its a small price. I also like playing in NYC because of all the crowds; I really feed off the energy and attention and go longer (albeit easier, or more one-sided).

Had a session last night in the city with Pascal. It was amazingly muggy and humid. I was sweating before I even changed into my shred gear. I looked at it as good practice for Worlds, cause I'm betting its going to be similarly humid down there. I hope we can play a lot indoors. Waylon and Ted were around for the beginning of the session, but soon left. I've been giving Waylon a hard time about getting his tiltless in order, but I see him making an effort, which is good, because its a sign that he's serious about improving. Playing 2 man with Pascal was fun; it brought me back a bit to the countless sessions we had in Cornell.

Some random shred highlights from the last few sessions:
*twirl-spin clipper-pdx torque
*revup-DSO (style!)
*pdx drifter-far symple swirl-rpt off the foot a few times.
*PS Torque to handcatch. 8) I hadn't hit that trick in years! Felt good.

I also did a good run-through of my Shred30. It would be nice to break 200 one more time. I haven't been very good about listening to my routine song or practicing it. :?

Read an Erik Chan blog post today which rivals anything I've ever written in terms of length. Damn. We should have a contest after Worlds to see who can blog about it more in depth/at length. :P

Barrett gave me a DVD with a rough cut of the promo video he made for his upcoming tournament, that we shot last week. It's really well done. It's funny to me though, cause we shot for something like 8 hours to make a 90 second video. But quality takes time.

East Coast Champs Blog

Post by C-Fan »

As loyal Journies to Tournies readers have probably surmised, I went to ECC last weekend. Just to be up front, my plan is to blog the crap out of this. I know some people don’t like my super-long posts, so I’ve decided to write two versions of the tourney. Here’s the quickie version:

East Coasts was great. I saw lots of old friends. It was real hot. Party was fun. I hit some good tricks in Sick1. I also hit my best routine ever. Watched some good net. Good times were had by all.

OK, now that that’s done, here’s the juicy version, in Ulysses-esque detail.

East Coast Champs 2007 Blog: Day 0

I almost didn’t go to ECC. For some reason I wasn’t really feeling the urge to go. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m getting old; back in the day there wouldn’t have been any deliberation at all. A tourney within 6 hours of where I live? I was there. But for some reason I lacked motivation this time around. ECC was so off my radar, that I didn’t even realize it was this weekend until the Wednesday before. I even had other plans set up. But on Thursday I was hit with the realization that ECC would be a great opportunity for me to practice my routine for Worlds under tournament conditions. I hadn’t really been practicing it as much as I should (I wasn’t even listening to my song everyday), so to have the chance to do it twice in front of an audience and judges was something I knew I shouldn’t pass up.

I had a couple options for rides, but I figured that this late in the game I would have to settle for floor space. At my age and crankiness, that was reason enough to stay home. So I called Jon Schneider and talked him into driving down and splitting a hotel with me, which ended up working out real well. The plan was to drive up early on Saturday, so I spent Friday hanging out with my sister in central Jersey to put me closer to our departure. I listened to my routine music a couple times, but mostly I spent the day just relaxing. I watched a few episodes of 2 of my favorite TV shows: Arrested Development and Coupling (UK). I went to bed early and relaxed.

Day One: Saturday

Woke up feeling good, had a bowl of cereal, and got a ride with my sister to Princeton to meet Jon. The plan was to hit the road at 9 am, to get to the site by 1 pm. We got a bit of a late start though, and around Delaware we hit bumper-to-bumper traffic. 1 pm was not going to happen. I was hoping Jon and I could make a surprise appearance, but when I realized we were going to be late, I had to call Pete to let him know we were coming. Luckily for us, there were very few people competing, which made it easier for Pete to push back freestyle until we arrived. Although the ride down took a long time, we listened to a lot of good music and it was fun catching up with Jon. Listened to the Last Days of Disco soundtrack, some KC and the Sunshine Band, and even some Liz Phair. We ended up arriving at the site around 2:30 pm.

Next: Day One comp and shred.

East Coasts 2007: Day One competition

Comp was scheduled for 1 pm, but by noon it was clear that Jon and I would not make it on time. I talked with Pete on the phone for a bit, and he was real flexible about starting later to accommodate us, because I was competing. Thanks Pete!

We ended up rolling up to the site around 2:30. I hopped out of the car, and immediately hit the bathroom. Slow traffic and being late for the tourney meant no bathroom stops on the way to the site. As I walked towards the site, I got really excited for a minute, because I saw people freestyling on a track. I love that squishy track foam material to play on, so my hopes got up, but as I got closer, I saw that the track was made out of… asphalt? What the?!? Who makes a running track out of asphalt? What’s the point? Why don’t people just run on the road then? Aaaanyway, I changed into my shred gear, said some hellos, and got to warming up. There was no shade, and it was blazing hot out, so my body got warm quickly. Still, I made a point to go through some tiltless drills to make sure I wouldn’t hurt myself. There were free water bottles at the site, which was really a life-saver. By the time Pete announced comp was starting, I felt physically alright, but a bit mentally jittery. Arriving late to a tourney throws my mental game a bit (like when I had to run to Sick3 finals in Helsinki after getting on the wrong tram), and this time was no different.

There weren’t that many competitors in Open, and not much of an audience on the first day, so I didn’t feel any pressure. I half-watched, half-warmed up during the other competitors routines. Zach Jahner scared me a bit, as his routine began with about a minute long guiltless string. That guy has improved like crazy since CSS7. But pretty much everybody got whupped by drops in their routines. I don’t know if it was the heat (the asphalt radiated heat up from the floor, while the sun melted you from above) or the glare of the sun, but day one was drop city. I was no exception. I felt mentally and physically fine, but I had something like 5 or 6 drops in my routine, and missed most of my cues. All my practice with juggling 2 bags did NOT pay off, and while I finished strong, I felt like it was one of my worst routines ever. It made me have doubts about competing at worlds at all.

I sat down and watched Bevier and Clavens routines. They’re 2 of the best routine players in America in my opinion, and even they struggled. Clavens ended his routine with a montage which was pretty awesome, but both of them had uncharacteristic drops too. When they were done, I was ready to be done with comp, but they announced a Sick Trick contest, so I figured I may as well participate. I think I went first, and I was pretty happy with my showing. I hit Your Mom first try, and it felt very deep. I also hit WHAT?!? first try, and managed a frantic eclipse, but the quantum felt thin. I think that’s all I hit on Day One. The comp was set up so they would pick the best trick from 2 days of comp. Flash hit fairy ss symp egg. Dave hit whirlwalk swirl which was nuts, as well as gauntlet and furious blender. Footbag has gotten crazy. I don’t know if I ever thought the day would come where people hit 7 and 8 add tricks within 5 tries in competition. As I type this, I just realized that Your Mom is technically a 7, so in a way I’m also participating in this phenomena.

After Sick Trick an informal game of HORSE was started. I’d never played it before, so I gave it a chance. I found it kind of pointless. The first few rounds took forever, because we were doing tricks like legover and pick up. I spiced things up for myself by hitting most of the 2s and 3s flipside or off of kicks and stuff like that, but it still was tedious. In the later rounds I didn’t really see the point of the game, because I knew I could hit a hard frantic/sailing/eclipsing trick and just give somebody a letter with that. The basketball version of HORSE works because every player needs to know how to shoot. In footbag though, part of the beauty is that everybody has their own bag of tricks.

After HORSE I watched some net, and played some Frisbee with Pete, Clavens, Toolan, Bevier and Alex. I was happy to be off the asphalt and on grass. As things at the site wound down, I ended up hackyslacking with Jon and some newbs with a really broken in netbag. That was really relaxing. Talked to Vince and paid my comp fee, then went to dinner with Rob Creel and Jon. I got real excited when we drove past a Fuddruckers, but it turned out to be closed. What a tease. Instead we ate dinner at some noodles place which was very tasty, and made me feel like I was carbo-loading for Day2 at the same time. After dinner we hit Vince’s place for the party.

Next: the Party.
