Stacked Deck

Post by Iron Clad Ben »

This is a video I made from shred on a couple different sessions earlier in the month. I haven't made a video in a while and I was itching to make one. This one was more about having fun and putting it to a song/band that I like a lot more than anything else. A snapshot of my game, after a little less than a year and a half.

I feel like I have so much to work on in my game. Please critique my shred and my form, or anything else you want to leave comments on. Thanks.

First off, I don't think you need to have "recent hits" in your signature. I prefer to wait for vids of people to see big jumps in progress rather than weekly updates after each post you make. But if you like it, cool.

Anyway, first trick is solid. Pretty good form, a little bit too high of a jump, but it looks pretty clean, which is good.

My first impression with your strings is that you aren't absorbing the impact enough on the tricks. Your legs stay ridgid and upright, you want to sink more into stuff. Not like, over sink to where you are hunched, but just enough that you aren't ridgid. By staying ridgid and not absorbing you will hurt yourself. This might be why you need those mats you play on...

2nd, your arms are a little off. They look very uptight and high, I think you should work on lowering them. Put them straight out, make your wrists limp, and just let them rise and fall naturally, they look too stiff. Also try loosening your hands up, so they arent in fists. It seems like your left hand clenches up a little bit.

At around 1:10 you can see something weird. Your same side clipper set is not like most players. You seem to set, wait for a while, and then clipper. You do it like Landes does. While this works for him, most players do a little bit of a hop back type thing which I think is more like natural playing.

The set on the blizzard looks a little weird. Not slurry, but I think your clipper foot is too close to your suppirt leg, so when the set happens its like your setting right under your leg (you should set, then go over), so its kinda funny looking. Pulled? no. Not exactly how it should be? yes. You could fix it by putting your support leg farther away. The ripwalk a few seconds later looked a lot better. Do that.

Absorb your infinities more, turn into the set a tiny bit more, bend your support leg.

As far as good stuff goes, there is quite a bit. I didn't want you to read all this and be like "wow david is a douche bag" because really your doing a lot of things right.

First off, your playing how someone at your level should trick wise. If this video was filled with 4's and some the 5's I would've probably not even bothered to comment. But the fact that you have a good foundation really impressed me. Your doing 2's and the easy 3's, and you have them with what seems pretty good consistancy. And that's great. That's a lot better than being one of those newbs who can hit smear>dimwalk but not 10 tiltless. So props for playing how you do, because in this modified world its easy to want to hit the big tricks and not school the basics.

Relating to your trick progression, I liked the ripwalk and the pdx. dlo and egg. They looked fine. You probably know you should work them on the flipside, so I won't go into that.

As far as the next step for you, I would say get the tricks you have with good form (not that your form is bad, your just not absorbing). You have to really cushion, watch the best players and they will frikken let the bag DIE. Vasek stalls the bag longer than just about anybody on most tricks I think. If you get these tricks down with more cushion it will give you more stability for tricks later on. It's easier to get a more accurate set out of a cushioned clipper rather than one that your kind of falling over from. As for falling over, remember to stay on your toes, some of your clippers were a little flatfooted.

Last thing is about your shoes. There is not reason you should not have walls. Your not hitting pixies, and even if you were you should have walls. So next pair of shoes, don't bother cutting them off. You obviously have no problem toe stalling, so the box would make it only better. I just think a player with your level having them off is a bit silly. Hell, if Vasek has them we should too, right?

Overall I'm happy for you. You improved a lot since U.S Open from what I've seen. And your almost through the worst part of footbag, where you have to skool the same stupid 10 tricks for days. I'm sure you'll be hitting a bunch of new stuff if you take even half my advice into action.

Thanks for the vid.

Request: any two with the dog. This could be interpreted as cruel, but my money says (s)he'd love it.

You're really good!

keep it up! but not your arms.

youve definetly been practicing. im glad youve been working eggs and dlos. some of them were thin, but its not a big deal to me. im glad you took time to make this vid, and do pretty damn good. idk about the shaky footy of texas holdem or whatev, but it fit for this one.

next time i want to see some more guiltless-y kinda stuff, like uptime sets (pixie, stepping), and some more spin. and symp dlo.

good job, and makemore vids!

Yo thanks everyone. David's advice was tremendously helpful. I am so lucky he took the time to give me so much feedback. I had one of the best sessions of my life this past Saturday based on using some of his advice. My consistency was incredible almost any reasonable links I tried I could hit, it felt great. Also I was bailing to 2's a LOT less because I felt much more comfortable setting out of butterflies and clippers, so I hit some really sweet guiltless combos I've never hit before.

The arm thing I really don't know what to do, I'll try to be conscious of that next time but my brain is thinking about pretty much every part of my body except my arms.

@comments about the dog: No I have not stepped on him. No I will not do tricks with him as the bag, he is like my kid, I take good care of him. If you check my youtube account I have lots of silly dog videos, his name is Tuesday and he is completely awesome.

@Brian, thanks yeah I was worried some of the eggs might have been thin but everyone else said they looked pretty good. Not sure if you were the only honest person on that or what but I appreciate the feedback. I'll work on getting them a little deeper. I'm not really big on sets too much, other than hangtime stuff like spinning & ducking. Shuffle just doesn't appeal to me. Symp DLO would be tight, I've tried that move a lot, it doesn't compute.

As for the special FX with the online poker and whatnot, they came out kinda shitty, but I'm not ILM over here, I do what I can. I guess if you're a card player, it means more.

I think I will a make another video fairly soon. I have a bunch of ideas. I really feel like my game took a significant leap forward after heeding some of David's advice, but who knows maybe it was a fluke session. I gotta catch u on IM one of these days buddy, thanks a ton.

@Ben R... yeah I used to play AD&D back in the day (91-95ish). I don't know anyone who plays any more, and with my free time fairly limited, I definitely prefer footbag over gaming. Besides I don't know anyone where I live who plays. But yeah I still have tons of dice so the lyric "let the dice roll" was a nice excuse to break them out. I also used to play RIFTS, GURPS, Werewolf the Apocolypse, Heroes Unlimited and several other pencil & paper RPGs too dorky to mention (such as Ninjas & Superspies).

@Ramil... dude because it was funny! I don't really understand what you said but it made me laugh because your English isn't very good. But don't take it personally you are cool guy and a great shredder. I think a lot of the stuff you say is really funny. Like "Brick!!!" I have no idea what you mean by that, but it's funny so I kept it :P Please don't be offended :o :o

hey, dave covered a bunch of stuff, but here are some things that I suggest:

- your illusions are obviously pretty good since you can hit eggs and stuff. i think some of them are thin though. i think this is because you raise your leg too high on simple dowtime illusions.

- i like your trick selection. some people say work sets into your game, and i agree, but working on sets too much can slow your progress. I know I have my pixie dialed but i suck at big downtime tricks. so keep up those dlos and eggs.

- i agree that the thing that will help your game the most is cushioning the stalls.

keep it up dude.

The first move hooked me. I like your leg style. Keep going u'll get more fluid.

Was some of that played in rewind or is the gravity off or is it just high sets with slow mo?

Hey Ramil, it's funny because I'm not english either, my first language is French. However my english is a lot better than yours ( I think :S) because I can practice far more often than you.

In that sentence : Brick ( what do you mean by that?? doesn't make sense to me ) Keep it form ! which you probably mean in good shape so like Keep it up! Keep it form doesn't make too much sense I think.

Nice video Ben!
