PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- A 71-year-old former Marine opened fire on two robbers at a Subway Sandwich Shop in Plantation late Wednesday night, killing one and critically wounding the other.

According to police, two masked men entered the Subway off Pine Island Road and Sunrise Boulevard in the Jacaranda Square strip mall after 11 p.m. Wednesday. "As I was about to go into the store, I noticed a man with a gun pointing down," said Sebastian Shakespeare. "I really didn't think it was a real gun."

According to reports, one of the suspects first attacked the store's employee before the second suspect attacked the customer. "He told him to give him all the money and asked if there's any more money in the back," said Darrell Mendez, the employee's cousin. "My cousin doesn't speak good English. He told them that's all the money, and he ducked down on the ground."

After robbing the cashier, the two men attempted to shove John Lovell who happened to be an ex-Marine into a bathroom and rob him. "As the customer was being forced into the restroom at gunpoint, the customer, who was in fear for his life and was legally armed, shot the robbery suspect," said Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department.

But the ex-Marine pulled out his handgun and shot one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other in the head . When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop and cash strewn around the front of the Subway. Police found the second suspect next to a nearby business. "The second subject was hiding in the bushes where a K-9 and his handler apprehended the suspect," said Rettig.

Paramedics transported both men to Broward General Medical Center, where one, Donicio Arrindell, 22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale, remains in critical but stable condition. Police say if Gadson survives, he will be charged with armed robbery and murder of his alleged accomplice.

According to police, the ex-Marine will not face any criminal charges because he has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. However, the State Attorney's Office have yet to confirm that.

The restaurant closed for the day.

How is that good news no matter how you look at it?

People dying is not cool. Violent robberies aren't either and I certainly am not comfortable with the idea of some ex marine wandering the streets with a gun.

why did the other suspect get charged with the murder of his friend? thats just fucked.

i feel comfortable with ANY marine walking around with a LEGAL gun... retired or serving. he was defending his life... and probably saved some other customers' lives by doing what he did. he was protecting his life and the lives of those around him.

the suspect deserved to be charged with murder. if he wouldnt have pulled an armed robbery, maybe his friend wouldnt have gotten shot. therefore its his fault.

if i were in a gas station and some guy was armed and robbing the store and threatening my life or others lives... i would certainly want a marine with a gun nearby.

Having a loaded gun (in which you are in illegal possession of) and holding an armed robbery where shots are fired (which most likely happened, the report is not specific enough) incites that you will be charged for the possibility of murder. NOT AGGRAVATED ASSAULT. If it was knife, it would be different, but the two robbers had loaded, REAL handguns, and threatened the lives of the employee, the customers, and this 71-year old man trying to defend his own life.

Killing in any form or action is not the best course of action in ANY SITUATION, but what are you going to do? Plan your shit out within 10 minutes? You don't have enough time for situations like these, where the unexpected can occur within a split second. This isn't the Matrix where you can dodge/deflect bullets in an instant.

Stop bashing on the old man. He did what was necessary at the time, eventhough he is under suspicion of legally holstering a gun of his own on his body. What's done is done. It was in self-defense. Plus, he was 71 years old. His accuracy could have been way off, so his aim wasn't directed toward anything in general except for the suspects. The shots fired could have been anywhere dependent on the situation.

It's not about the marine, it's about the fact that people on this forum think that it's "Good news for once." It's not good news. I don't think anybody involved thinks that it's good news. I hope I speak for most people when I say that I would feel bad if I killed somebody, no matter what the circumstances were.

Maybe the action of shooting people was justified, I don't know because I wasn't there. To later proclaim that this incident was a good thing is ludicrous.

This is one of the most fucked up things I've read on here in a long time - aren't you a grown man? OBVIOUSLY they were going to kill this old man. That's ALWAYS what robbers do - DUH. Especially when they're robbing a fucking SUBWAY of all places. They didn't fire a single shot the entire time they were there. I don't understand how you can overlook the underlying racial tension in this story. Northern Florida remains one of the most openly racist regions in America. A cousin of mine recently moved her family there and the schools are still segregated for fuck's sake. Nearly all of the white kids are admitted into more prestigious IB programs with completely separate passing periods, lunch periods, etc., so that they almost never even see one another. Fuck, they even have separate White and Black football teams. And allow me to repeat, because evidently you dense troglodytes didn't get me earlier, the name of the city is motherfucking PLANTATION. That is not right. So pardon my generalization for one second, but this 71 year-old ex-marine residing in PLANTATION, FLORIDA is not down with the colored folk. Sure I'm generalizing, but I grew up in Tennessee, I know a lot of old white dudes and while they're not actively out picking on black people (unless they're in the Klan, but I'm going to give this guy the benefit of the doubt and not reach that far), they've been conditioned their entire lives, living in the south, to look down on the inferior negroes. You can't deny this shit because it is 100% the truth; I've experienced it since I was a child. My momma always told me, just ignore it, they don't mean any harm - it's just the way they were raised. And for the most part it's true, unless you give one of them a firearm and they feel threatened.

Furthermore, this dude is an ex-marine. He knows the fucking difference between a shot to render harmless and a shot to kill. A shot to kill in this situation was completely the fuck unnecessary. They're scared kids robbing a mostly-empty FAST FOOD joint. - not a federally-insured bank, not his house, not the fucking Pentagon, but... SUBWAY. Obviously this makes them highly trained, dangerous criminal outlaws. He could have easily wounded them in the arm or leg - or even both - took away their weapons and waited for paramedics to arrive. The kids would get over their minor injuries, do time for armed robbery, and have a second chance at life (I guess if you overlook the fact that America's justice system can't actually rehabilitate its prisoners....) But no - he shot them in the head because they were black and he didn't give a fuck - plain and simple.

The police obviously didn't give a fuck either; they let him off the hook without a second thought. Even in self defense, no homicide should be brushed aside that easily - it doesn't even say they took him in for questioning!
I know most of you won't agree, but this is some fucked the fuck up shit. It's hard but try to look at it from the criminals' perspective. Haven't you ever royally fucked something up and realized you made a mistake and would never ever do it ever again? If the man had taken a more civilized approach to his "self-defense" I would bet these dudes wouldn't be out doing stickups for a living again when they got out of the joint. And fuck, don't any of you read books? Go pick up some early Richard Wright and then come back to this scenario.
