I'm really shit at reading the dates people post things in threads and I only just realised that most of the posts on the online Chess thread were from 2005.

I found this good site. www.chessproblems.com a couple days ago and I have been training my newb skills there.

If anyones interested in seriously getting a few games going I am most certainly up for it. If theres anyone who's really quite decent on these forums I'd really appreciate some training.

I think by far the best advice for getting good at chess is either finding somebody who is really good, and getting lessons from them, or getting a program like Chessmaster and going through the tutorials.

Learning chess theory is probably the most important thing to do to get good, that and playing *lots* of games.

Thanks for that. I've gone through the chessmaster tutorials actually and so basically I guess I just need someone who's interested in helping me get better. I reckon the Chess problems are helping me because just after a couple days I can already 'see' things on the board alot better.

As for "theory", there is a lot of value in learning the first few moves of the most common openings and also learing the basic endgame techniques (eg king+2 bishops vs king, etc). The thing that helped me the most with chess was probably the inordinate amount of time I spent at the melbourne chess club and the tips I got from a IM who was living at my place for a few months. Ultimatley, meeting up with other players (of a good standard) is the best way to improve your skills.

And practice, practice, practice....

I wouldn't mind a few games myself, haven't played in aaages and my skills are probably a bit rusty but I shouldn't be too bad

I used to play in the junior competitions, never came first thought - just second a few times

The notation is mailed. Not some odd sort of 'yahoo chess game' file.
