Ok bitches, that is right, I am starting this blog post off really cocky.

MOBIUS SCREW

BOOM!

First 6 add? I think so.

So I guess tomorrow will be my one year anniversary for footbag. I will be on a plane the entire time, and I wont have any time to shred. So, well, that sucks. But, at least I can say that I learned alot this year, and have no intention of stopping.

(mmm.... mobius screw...)

I MUST get it on video when I get back to Canada! But, since well, mobius' are only like, 5/10 for me it might take a while.

Thanks for being so awesome to me this year modified.

jay, i hope you had a save trip back to canada, i think you left last night.

if so, check out these fun little challenges i made up for you:

- hit all you tricks b2b or bsos if b2b does not work, also dont do it just one time.
- hit bedwetter bs
- drifter >pdx drifter > rep x 4 (get more if you like to
- dyno > blender > blender > dyno
- barfly > spinning whirl > rep (when this works for 4repetations do: blurriest > scorpionstail ;) )
- datw > double switch over > rep
- paradon > double pickup > rep

that should give you some work, if you want more i can make some more ridiculous drills for you.

peace man

Just had my first Canadian shred with people other than my friends from my town. The culprit was none other than Josh Lackey, who drove all the way from toronto to Georgetown and picked me up to shred. Anyway, onto the shred.

josh -> well, I don't know what is special for him just yet. But I will post the things that struck me as wowey.

strings, tiltless/low guiltless. I saw them on the msjf videos, but seeing them in real life makes me realize what I have been missing by just trying to go guiltless/tripless all this time. Oh yeah, he hit mobius first try as well.

Anyway, now I am back from my third shred of the day. I went to Liam's after playing with Lackey, because I was SO DAMN excited that lackey tought me how to blender! I hit...

Blender -> torque bsos,
Torque -> blender bs
Double Blender footed, bs.
Janiwalker bs, one for lackey, 2 for liam (bs) and then I hit one flipside for one of my sisters friends when she wanted to show me off to him.

Overall, I love blenders. I got blender b2b at liams, as well as ducking clipper -> blender bsos, and I also got a blender->dyno->blender.

Why couldn't have Lackey come to liams to watch that, why?

Read the toronto footblog for my review of today, I'll just write highlights in here.

Torque bsos, few times.
Ripped warriors, bsos once.
Blurry whirls, bsos.
Massive ducking / diving run, the basic ducks, then the basic duck/dive butterflies, and then a ducking osis or two.
Blur / Dyno bsos. EDIT blender, not blur
Blur b2b. EDIT Blender, not blur
blur -> dyno -> blur. EDIT Blender, not blur
Pheonix's somewhere.
Spinning ducking butterfly bsos.
Whirl war one two times in a string.
Whirl -> drifter *rpt
Janiwalker, bs many times again.
Blurriests, b2b (hand catch inbetween) again.
Quantum whatever bsos.
Blur -> legbeater bsos...
Eggbeater / dlo / drifter bsos.

Yeah, there is more I am probably forgetting. Today was awesome, except for the fact that my legs were beat the entire time.

So, just played at Toms house. I hit some cool stuff, and well, some not so cool stuff.

Toe Blur -> legbeater bs,
Some run with torque->torque in it.
Some run with blenders and dynos all over the place.

I learned....

Symposium near mirage
Symposium whirls, the righter way.
Swirls the righter way.
Whirls, the righter way (still needs a more snappy look to look as cool as Tom)
Barflies, the righter way (still needs a more illusiony look to look as cool as Tom)
A friendly reminder that my spinning is "froggy". I hear that I should set then spin, but I try it, think it is good, and apparently it is STILL froggy. Damnit.

I also got my first torque -> stepping chest height. I mean, I've gotten stepping out of torque that was low enough to sneek something in, however never something high enough to do a, say, ripped warrior out of....

Yeah, so, a couple Germans have probably been wondering "why hasn't Jay been updating as much anymore?" and my answer is "I'm FINALLY working on string length, instead of tricks all the time!"...

So, with that, I don't think the stuff I regretted to do, that isn't that special, is worth going home in excitement and posting about. But, just to not keep you guys in the dark, here is all the stuff I am working into my strings..

Drifters -> from toe and clipper = confident. My drifter to drifter record (that I set tonight) is 11.

Blenders / Dynos, -> I am trying to weed out the osis' from my strings with them, if possible. Osis' are basically just bails now, but if comfortable, I like to try these.

Swirls / Reverse swirls -> Today I got swirl -> far swirl bs, and I also got swirl/reverse swirl bsos. I am trying to get these confident, so that I can start using them in difficult situations, and moreso so that I can get ripsteins/whirling swirls etc in strings more confidently. I no longer just slap the swirl and say I hit them.

Barrages -> I actually just tried tonight. I got left barrage midstring, first try, really easily. I find that if I try to do my right barrage like my right janiwalker, it hurts my knee for some reason. SO I have to do it more downtime on the right side. However, that knee problem is likely just today.

Barflies -> For the last few days, I was missing the catch on EVERY flip double dex, which was foreign, because my flip double dex has never had a problem. I just figured out with a little tinkering today that my set was to far in front of me, and then I realized that I developed this bad habit by trying to many scorpions tails. However, I got barfly bsos*2 today.

Whirls -> Just clipper whirls for the moment, for some reason, the "groin" area of my right leg (and left, a little) seems to almost get pinched when I do pdx whirls to much. So, I've been experimenting with normal whirls until they look a fraction as amazing as Vasek/Jorden/Dave's, so that I wont get this damn pinching thing.

More on pinching, I am throwing pinchers in my strings when I get bored with low guiltess stuff. It is fun.

Quantums -> The motion is just so strange for me to hit out of almost anything right now, outside of something like a legover or mirage. So I am trying to get them out of harder toe tricks, like ducking legover, and the like.

Now, the pinching hip thing. This SUCKS! It makes me unable to do fairy's, or paradox whirls. Also, my right pdx drifter suffers as well, which really, really blows. Today I got toe drifter -> drifter -> pdx drifter -> drifter, but I would REALLY like to be able to do pdx drifter with my right leg, so that I wouldn't have to use that damn toe drifter. Curse you Pinching thing! GAH!

Either way, today I hit some nice strings, I got torque, blenders, and all of the above mixed together in strings somehow all together. The tricks I use to link the above mentioned, are usually pdx mirage/leg/illusion, ducking/diving clippers, osis', tiltless, pixie->tiltess/pixie->guiltless, and ripwalks/sidewalks. Some moves like blur I can also use as a run filler, so I hit blur->pheonix today, it is just such an easy move for me. Like a smear.

My goal is to get all of my atomic/above mentioned tricks in strings, so I can be comparable to Adam Greenwood in string length in not so long. I mean, I can already hit a few guiltless/tripless and then throw a fearless in somewhere, but I would just like to have the confidence with my higher guiltless/all of tripless to not worry about "Will this blender be able to go into ripped warrior, or will I just have to bail to infinity or something?".

Yeah so, for all those that are wondering "why am I not seeing Jay hitting a new trick per day like he used to?" it is because I am finally realizing that hitting runs is alot of fun, and that if I ever want to be a good player that can represent Canada, I'll have to be able to hit good strings as well.

Another note, I REALLY want to be able to say "I am #5 in Canada" within about a year. I know this is a huge goal, because I'll have to beat Ianek and Mosher, and then some of the edmonton shredders (no names are coming to mind, The insane toe to toe player though..) and then people like Erik Chan. However, I figure if I have came to where I am now within a year, that if I learn the same amount as I did, it shouldn't be a horrible problem. Sure, I look at Tom on his back porch nailing these tipless/fearless runs, but if I can already hit all the fearless now, and my string length has went from 2 contacts to 15 guiltless/higher within a month, in a year I should be good.

And also, for some reason, every time I set a goal for myself I beat it until I get it, so, why not set this one high? And hell, if I find I am only #10 in Canada or something, that is still incredible.

Thanks for reading. I can't wait to be 'good'. It just feels like it is so close, I can almost touch it.

hi jay, long time no talk. good your working on your string length. it seemed to be the only weak point of your game. you want to be nr. 5 of canada? i'm nr. 5 of germany right now ;). a lot of the open players didn't compete at the german championships, so i had the opportunity to become nr. 5 out of only 9 competitors. did a routine with mostly butterflies and osii with more than 10 drops or so. but still: nr 5!
what about the rubberman race? i don't get more than three contacts, but the weakest part, the flipside blur is catching off...
On sunday there is an appaerance in a tv-show planned here in mainz at the ZDF-studios. around twenty players from all over germany will show up in mainz. i'm so excited!!!
One bad thing happened though: the bag you stitched for me is broken. the dental floss broke(?) and one stitch is pulled. greatings to canada. hope your doing well. 8)

Hah, Marco, if you wan't to repair that bag go ahead, but I don't think it is worth it ;)

Anyway, I was shredding today, doing a bit of my routine, and then just shredding and learning. I thought "possibly the people that click on this blog would actually like to see some updates on shred..."

Barfly / Barrage bsos,
Smear -> parkwalk -> blender bsos.
Swirl -> drifter * rpt (starting with swirl, but ending in a nice string..)
Dyno and Blender -> DLO bs,
Symple legover / symple swirl bsos. (JUST learning symposium stuff now. Yeah, now. First symp mirage was today...)
Atomsmashers / legbeaters all over the place...
Torques are present, but for some odd reason I am bailing to toe with them. Odd, because before, and still now, I can do a whole wack of tricks out of torque. :?
Ripwalks / sidewalks and easy enough, I got sidewalk->blender bsos, and then ripwalk -> dyno bsos today.

Anyway, the best feeling of today was getting barfly -> barrage bs, and I can't wait to try flurries! My knees didn't seem to appreciate trying them to often today, but another, knee healthier day, I will try flurries alot. I love the downtime motion of them anyway, feels so cool.

Oh, and I am still trying to clean up this spinning, and I assume it is looking better, because they are just more consistant, and fly WAY straighter up.

I can't wait to shred with Tom again, and show him what I've learned. ON another note, I can't WAIT to shred with Jorden this weekend! You know what I said about my first time playing with tom was like Christmas? Yeah, Jorden is like, jesus, *I was saying Jesus like a sigh, but then I realized, it is like playing with jesus*...

Jorden Shred.

Ok, get a few PM's done, and it is set up to play with Jorden in Hamilton. Get a drive, with Gresham/Liam who are two other 905'ers, and we get slightly lost. My anticipation meter was going through the roof, and then we called to get directions from somewhere in Hamilton. Luckily, Jorden's mom knew where we were and how to get us to the house.

After an introduction, and a hacking circle we went to some fountain area inbetween two roads, where it was nicely shaded. We hacked some more, and I was just about to burst, I mean, hacking with Jorden is a great opportunity and all, however I really wanted to start shredding. I know Jorden is a very experienced player, and I wanted to learn everything I possibly could. Finally he suggests we start playing, and he hit some 5->5 link, which was a nice start.

Anyway, I learned many things from Jorden today,,..

-My clipper position in comparison to his, is incorrect. I mean, I have no problem with my clipper position, for it is how I play quite comfortably, however he said that after a few years he has refined his to the way he was trying to show me. I know his way is correct, and I know that with certain tricks it would definetly help, however it hurts my leg. I am not sure yet whether it is because his clipper position uses formally un-used areas of my leg, or if his position is actually just negative for my body type and legs. Another problem, is since his clipper position is so far back from my body, my ankle crank can not catch it very well. My foot is almost at an 85% angle with his position. If I were to be using Lavers, I would never catch the bag.

-Posture. Well, my posture is crap while walking around, so expecting it to be good for Freestyle footbag is rediculous. Either way, I never knew that the way your arced your back, and the way you twisted your shoulders had such an impact on your game. On alot of my tricks, quantum for example, I couldn't get it out of anything really. He pointed out my posture, and how it should be, and that it will make it easier to execute. I didn't try it to much, but it makes logical sense.

-Hips. Well, like posture, hips are more important than I thought. This goes along with clipper form, my infinities have used HUGE knee seperation for, forever. According to Jorden, if I was to use his clipper position and to swing my hips alot more, they would have better form. This goes with everything, even inside kicks. IF you didn't know, at this point, my kicks are not confident at all. He told me that my inside kicks should be further accross my body, and that I should twist my hips more.

-Mental Outlook. Wow, hearing Jorden talk about footbag makes me realize as to why he is one of the greatest players ever. Just how his outlook is on everything, treating your body, what you eat (well, he did drink chocolate milk mid-session. Apparently that is one of his secrets ;) ) and how you are never perfect and so on. I read what he wrote on flipsider and the like, about always improving your trick even if you can hit it 10/10 times, but I honestly didn't think he was serious. You hear people preach about stuff, religion and how everyone is a sinner and the like, and you look at them and they are hypocrytes, so why would you listen to them? You know what they say is a good way to live, but you know it isn't practical. Hearing Jorden speak about how to improve as a player, was so practical and so logical, and he DOES live it himself, just makes it, very, inspiring. Hopefully this inspiration is more than just a good feeling, and I can continue to try and think more like this in the future.

-Rhythm. Well, I never really inspected the rhythm aspect of footbag. I mean, I look at say, me, trying to hit rubberman. I attack the damn bag, and I 'power' through it almost. Then I look at Lon Smith hit rubberman, and it is like a walk in the park. I assumed this was the 'style' thing, and that some people just look better than others. Jorden easily showed me that no, it doesn't just happen, style developes nicely when you try to make everything effortless. With Rhythm, this is possible. When Jorden plays, you can almost see the hour clock over his head ticking, every trick is just so well timed, and the same. He looked at my toes, and how I used them, and told me that if I scoop the bag more, the rhythm will come much more naturally. He also told me kicking is important, and told me to first kick the bag a few times, then do the 'rackey' toe stalls, and then start your string. I don't have the concept yet, but if it works for him I should probably try and copy it. ON this note, this toe style is horrendous to switch to. My toe stalls are so up and down, that making a magic circle with the bag is really foreign. So, I try something like a fairy set with this looping motion, and it is impossible. However, looking at Jorden do it, it is perfection. Also, the toe racky thing is good because the bag sets equally every time.

I didn't hit one good string today, which was slightly depressing. I was trying to change my year of bad habits in one day, which is obviously not going to succeed. It was so frustrating, because I knew that if I just used my old style, I could hit any of the stuff I was trying to hit. But I know that if I don't give this new style at least a solid kick at, then I'll likely never progress to a really good player, which is what I would like to become.

I assume Jorden will be reading this post, so I just wanted to say thanks alot for letting us shred with you, and it really meant alot to me that you took the time to critique and explain our mistakes. I know this session probably wasn't the most productive for you yourself, and that you probably would have liked to play at your incredible level, but I am extremely grateful that you took the time to share your vast knowledge with us.

Oh yeah, thanks for hitting stepping superfly swirl,. When he hit it, I jumped in the air like a little school girl, and HE hit it. It is definetly my favourite trick, and after seeing it hit by him, oh god. Also your surging motion was pretty nice :)

I thought I was playing at my level. :oops:

Thanks Jay. Sounds like you really took the advice to heart.
It is very important to always question everything you do in freestyle. Say to yourself "do I honestly think this is the best possible way to hit this move?" for every move. If the answer is no, then start your trial and error process of eliminating the bad and retaining the good by tweaking every angle and body position you can think of.

Good luck. :)

So, I go down to my basement to practise my routine a bit, and get quickly frustrated. All of my good bags were upstairs, drying, so that I could patch them up. SO I used another bag, which is ok, but even worked in it just rolls and rolls and rolls. Anyway, what I came here to 'report' is that some of Jorden's advice is actually becoming natural. The entire "toe rake" thing that I hated so much just sorta finds it's way into the start of my strings, and kicking is also starting strings as well. I actually just put those toe raky things into my routine, as a buffer incase I went to fast, or will drop to much.

THe only highlight of the session is drifter->ss butterfly*6, so 12 contacts of it. It was funny, because I was trying to do it with this bag, and I hated it, I couldn't get the drifter after the ss osis. THen Jorden's words sorta rang in my head, "When you butterfly, don't dex and then cushion, do them together". Immediately, first try, I got the 12 contacts. So it isn't really a big accomplishent, just cool to see that Jorden's advice is helping.

Oh, and I am going for an interview for a hospital Job today, it's hours are nice, and they will give me perfect time for footbag. I only played twice so far this week, because I have been working so damn much. 2 of the days I worked 14 hours [12 hours, with one hour drive on either side], two of them I worked only 8, however it was hard labour in the blazing sun, so I had NO energy for footbag. I really want this hospital job, so that I wont have to go to work with my dad (the really long hours) and then not be able to footbag. It is not that I mind working long hours, I really enjoy working and actually getting something done, but I also want to not waste my summer away just for work, which I'll be doing for the rest of my life. I always felt in Germany that "ha, all the people in north america have jobs, so possibly I can improve a bit quicker than they can" and now whenever I don't have time for footbag, I literally feel guilty, because I really want to play- but can't.

Alright, just curious. Some of my strings now, I do think are very confident, and many are around the 20-30 guiltless/tripless/odd fearless+tiltless range, and I'm kinda happy.

If any of you are wondering as to why I haven't released any video's, it is because my camera broke.

So, if anyone wants new footage of myself, please say the string you'd like to see, or what you'd like me to BSOS, and I'll take my sisters camera one day and try and get them all. The reason I request you guys to ask for it, is because I don't care if I make a video really, and if none of you guys want it either then, well, I'll just wait until my camera is fixed and then I'll put one out every few weeks again... No 3/4 add move to bsos (or multiple in one string) is too challenging, so let them rip! [and if it IS too challenging, then I'll work my ass off so it isn't.]
_______________________________________

I'm saving this part of the post for highlights of later tonight. I am gonna work on my routine for one hour, and then random crap for another hour.

_______________________________________

A few highlights...

Bsos'ed dyno,torque,blender and atomsmasher.

Bsos'ed toe blur, legbeater and barfly.

Bsos'ed Swirl,Drifter,whirl,Gyro Mirage.

Bsos'ed far swirl

Bsos'ed Eggbeater, double legover*2, both of the double legovers was Clipper set DLO->DLO,

Bsos'ed Ripwalk->spinning illusion, blizzard.

Bsos'ed Rev Whirl->whirl->osis,

Bsos'ed far ducking legover, diving legover, barrage.

Edit-> I got clipper->dragon mirage (like, near mirage but from dragon) bsos.

The reason I stopped playing, was because for some reason my right knee began to hurt everytime I did a clipper. I tried using just my right toe->toe moves to take place, but then my knee began to hurt from just a mirage, so I figured it would be a good idea to stop... While I was contemplating what I should do, I got paradox dyno, and paradox blender, flipside....

I CAN'T WAIT FOR WORLDS!

-Jay

Wait... How long have you been playing?

Was your one year anniversary in June?

If it is I freaking hate you.

I want to see you bsos 3 5's.

I just want to see the best STRING you could pull off with the less bail possible. Something around 20 contacts with very low bop or tiltless.
