After shredding a bit at the square we went back to kenny/kendall's place to eat, hang out, and register. It was cool to meet a bunch of net players and hang out. It was also great to meet some new faces like Aaron Orton. I decided to compete in the open division for the first time. I've been playing guiltless for a couple of months and I view that as a sign of open. I think too many intermediates stay there for too long. Even though I knew I'd get dead last by a large margin it was just time to take the step.
Saturday was cool because we were at a park with all the net players, it's cool to see them play. There were a lot of competitions on that day and I ended up judging a few of them. It's cool to see a competition from the other side, judging is something that I enjoyed a lot that weekend. I judged with Evan on a competition and we had a conversation about objective judging and everything and then five minutes later I had to cut him from the circle comp, we both appreciated the irony. I competed in open shred 30 and preformed very poorly, but I don't mind because it was my first time competing open and i had some nerves. The thing I was most impressed with was Kyle Hewitt's routine competition, it was awesome! He took everybody by surprise, I'm sure he put a lot of work into it and should be very proud. Watch out for him in routines when he goes open.
Sunday morning Evan, Jim, and I got up before everybody and went out to play disc golf. I'm so glad we got the game in, it was a lot of fun. Evan's the one who got me into it so it was cool to play with him again. Evan and Jim both played pretty well. I didn't do so great but i landed a great put from far away on the last hole.
We were on our way from disc golf to pioneer square for the days events and decided to stop at a burrito place for some lunch on the way. We pull up into a parking spot, roll up our windows, grab our stuff and Evan says "Uhhh guys, why's that cop behind us....did we just get pulled over?" Turns out the car had studded snow tires on it and it's a little out of season. So the cop comes up to the door, asks for the registration and all of our id's, Jim doesn't have his so he just gives her all his info. Then of course she asks why a guy from Montana, a guy from Idaho, and a guy from Washington are doing together in Oregon. The U.S. Footbag Championships isn't exactly a normal answer for that question
I judged a couple more events on sunday too, which posed a small problem at one point. Both Evan and I judged the sick trick comp which was right before rippin run which we were both competing in. Because there was something like six or seven seven add moves hit, it was really hard to judge so we were at it for a while and when we finish the rippin run is starting. We warmed up together for about three minutes and then went up on stage in the middle of downtown Portland to compete. Fortunately we were competing against each other so we had the same handicap. Big props to Evan for taking third in rippin run, he really did well.
We said our goodbyes later and left straight from the event back to Seattle. We stopped at a subway an hour out of Portland to grab something to eat. I went to change my clothes and realize that I've left my dufflebag with all my clothes back at Reds. Fortunately for me Sam wasn't leaving until monday so he grabbed it and took it back for me.
All in all it was a great time, I'm very glad I went, thanks for a good time Red!
