I've been fishing a lot over the last week and I love it. It's so relaxing and you can just zone out and think. I haven't caught much yet but that's probably a good thing seeing as im fishing illegally, but I am getting my licence when I get paid on friday. Me and my friend fish at this creek over by my highschool. Last night I turned around and there was a deer about 20 feet behind me just staring right at us. it was awesome. it just took a drink and walked away calmly, perfect postcard picture. All the other people that fish there are real cool too.
Anybody else into it?

Illegal fishing? What the hell man..... It's good to be southern sometimes....Just find a creek, cast out and sit in a chair that you made. Nothing better, even if you don't catch anything, but if you do... You get to eat it...mmm Nothing better than starting a fire with nothing and cooking a scrawny little fish

I used to fish with my dad pretty regularly as a kid. I haven't done it in years, but I'm tempted to give it another go. Nice to sit in a boat on a calm pond at 6 in the morning, hearing the world wake up.

I love fishing, it's one of my favourite things to do when I want to kick back and relax. There's nothing better than sitting on the edge of a creek and just be able to listen to nature and think.

I've been fishing since I was old enough to hold a rod. My Dad was a Fish and Game Conservation Officer so I grew up in the outdoors. I like to think I'm pro at two sports; footbag and fishing. Most people don't have a clue how to catch fish. They just pick their spot, set a lawn chair up and stay there all day. They think it's luck whether or not they catch a fish. This is NOT the way to catch something. Unless you just feel like being lazy.
Fishing is kind of like poker, people insist it's luck but it's really all about skill.
So here's a few tips for fishing
-worms always work!
tie a size 4 or 6 hook on. I usually use #4 even for small fish.
Put a sinker on about a foot above your hook.
THREAD the worm on. Head first push the worm up over your hook until you push his head over the eye-lit. Clip the tail off so you have about 1/2 inch of tail hanging off. If you have too much tail the fish will bite it and not the hook. This technique keeps it on a lot longer than if you bunched it on like most people. Now you have what I call a "worm jig"
Find a good hole and cast twice into each good spot. Sort of scan the area from one side to the other. Keep your hook slightly off the bottom by jigging it towards you. Keep the tension in your line tight at all times. DON'T reel up slack. It will put loops in your reel and cause a mess later. Don't take too many casts at one hole. If you haven't caught a fish in five minutes, MOVE ON. All the fish have already seen your bait. You can always come back to that hole later. And usually it's better when you come back to it. When you do get a bite you need to SET THE HOOK. (another reason to have your line tight) Most people I see never do this. They sit in one place for an hour and finally have a fish come along and swallow their hook. They have a bunch of slack in the line so that pulls tight, then they reel the fish in with blood pouring from it's gills. Unless you're gonna keep every fish I wouldn't recommend this. Before you go out PINCH THE BARB on the hook. This will make it way easier to release the fish. When you feel a bite lift the tip of your rod with a swift motion. Then the fight is on, never let slack in the line once you have a fish on or you'll lose it. When handling the fish, get your HAND WET first. Handle the fish carefully, don't squeeze it, don't even take it out of the water if you're not gonna keep it. I like to use needle nose pliers to take the hook out. I see so many people mishandle fish and most of the time they're killing that fish and don't even know it.
Fishing for me is a great way to relax, and get my mind off things. But that doesn't mean you have to be lazy about it. Stay on your feet! Move around! Try one hole then move on to the next. The secret to fishing is making a lot of CASTS. And of course having the right bait. If you don't believe me, watch a pro fish. They're not sitting in one place, they're constantly moving around with there trolling motor. If they're not catching fish they switch baits until they find one that works. They hardly ever look back to hole where they caught a fish, they keep going to the next one.
And remember fishing in the MORNINGS or EVENINGS is definitely the best time. This is when fish are feeding and are most active. I'm not much of a morning person so I usually go the last hour or two of daylight. But be careful some places have legal night fishing. Others close at sunset, so make sure you know the regulations. And last but not least, treat the outdoors with RESPECT. Please don't litter! And follow the fish and game regulations. They're there for a reason.
