Anyone here a Free-diver???
Here I am coming up from around 200 feet below the surface in Kona, HI. This is the best pic I have thus far. My buddy was around 60 feet down when he took this pic of me, and he told me he zoomed in all the way. Pretty cool, no? My record holding my breath is 4 minutes 54 seconds.

This was taken last year in Maui...and I was about 120 feet down...and then they came out of the blue....just amazing IMHO.

I think.. though I'm not sure.... You get the bends from pressurized air. Since you're getting air from a mask your lungs don't compress like they should. OR something like that ... It's something like that.... The point is.. I don't think you get the bends from just freediving.... I could quite possibly be wrong though.Pirate Man wrote:I guess I don't know much about the bends, and obviously there mustn't be this danger since you're able to do it, but there's no danger of getting the bends from going from 200 feet below to sea level in that amount of time?

You are quite wrong. What is known as the bends is when your body goes through a rapid decompression, or in other words the pressure around you changes very quickly. When you change pressure too quickly nitrogen bubbles can go into your blood stream causing dizziness and if it's bad paralysis and death.
I guess thinking about it now 200 feet difference in pressure doesn't sound like enough to cause any remotely dangerous results.

I knew it had something to do with nitrogen..... Oh well, can't win them all.Pirate Man wrote:You are quite wrong. And no, there is no danger at all of the bends free diving.
I love being underwater, It's so fun to take a giant snorkel and sit at the bottom of creek and watch all the turtles and fishies play.

im so jealous you can hold your breath for so long.
What kind of training do you have to go through in order to be able to hold your breath that long and go under intense pressure.

I think the best thing to do is just practice holding your breath. The key is to stay calm and collected.ObArA'BaRs wrote:im so jealous you can hold your breath for so long.

I try and meditate while in the water, and....
I try to relax and slow my heart rate down to about 40-50 beats per second. I have been swimming since I can remember, and we had a pool before I was born, so I am like a fish in water. When I go deep, I go down rather quickly...hang out for a short while, and then start to come back up. I have never tried to push my limits, for I have not had any back up with me, like scuba divers, yet when we go to Maui, I have a buddy who lives there, so we dive down to about 40 feet and pick up a huge rock and run back and fourth under water...lol... I guess I am a nut, but there are worse things than that, hehehe.
Hey Cameron...when are you coming down to Mission Beach for a Jam session? I am hitting tripless and guiltless at times now...not bad for a 39 year old, no?
Take care all, Michael
