Dreadlocks
I recently started dreads ( 'bout a week or so ago ). Just curious if anyone else has them or know some-one who has them. How long have they had them, what products if any do they use on them? Anything dread related really, help spread the word on a kickass hair style.

Yeah... That would suck man... Though he probably didn't have to do that.... There are ways to get rid of them if you have dreads.Chim-Chim wrote:I knew a guy who got his hair dreaded - a few weeks later he had to have it all shaved off because he managed to get lice

when i had dreads (hs...2.5 yrs ago)
i used dreadhead, and used conditioner from them. the comb and rubber bands were all you really need tho.
i had dreads for 6 months. from right after christmas, up until summer job time came around. they were 7-9'' for the most of them. the first one i had, charlemagne, was only 1''....
they were sweet. i missed them then, but now i dont.
having long hair in the warm months sucks monkey balls. especially if theyre like a blaket of knots on your head. and forget hats.
i kept mine really clean. id suggest washing your hair like 2x a week. (with regular bar soap, followed by dredhed conditioner. )
take some pics! but not if your ugly!

I had dreads for three years. My hair was like three feet long when I started & the dreads were about two feet long (some longer) when I cut them off. They were magnificent.
I would say I'll post some pics, but actually I won't be posting any pics... I don't wanna give you dreadlock blue balls (man that's a disgusting mental image).
I used knotty boy products. The wax makes things easier but I'd suggest using it sparingly, because with thicker dreads it doesn't come out entirely (I didn't know this until I cut them off). So you're basically just gluing dirt & lint inside of your dread... yeah...
I washed mine every day, the shampoo is terrific. Smells so nice.
Its weird to think about how I used to have dreads.
If you've got more specific questions maybe I can help, don't know what else to recommend. Who is doing the dreading? You, a friend, a salon? I'd avoid the salons, its just a waste of money & sometimes their methods are not so great.

I don't have any ideas to make your dreads better, but I will say this....a long time ago I was gonna do dreads, so I grew my hair really long. I had heard that you have to have REALLLLLLLY dirty hair to dread it the real way, just knots no product, and so I didn't wash my hair for 4 months. The point to this story, which is acturrry quite pointless, is that when I would have sex with my ex my long gnarlily dirty hair would swing around and brush in her face and get in her mouth and it was awesome
(for me not her
)
On another note, the guy who introduced me to footbag the sport had the coolest dreads I have ever seen. His name is Kenny and he is from Sudbury, ON, and I heard actually the other day that he shaved them off
He had them for years

I'll show pictures to everyone who wants to see them at NYJ. Maybe I'll put some online, but thats pretty unlikely.
Or you could just come down to Chicago some time before NYJ...
Alright, here's a picture, maybe not the best to showcase the dreads:

I'll get some in a few days mayhap?brinard wrote:take some pics! but not if your ugly!
From the people I've talked with, the best way to do them is the backcombing method, and then just keeping them clean IE residue free soaps, salt water sprays now and then to help lock them up, wax to take care of frizzies ect.
Brian, seeming as you used the products that I'm currently using anything I should know about them? What were your thoughts about'm? And how long if at all did it take for the tips of yours to lock up and round off... I'm having quite a hard time with mine, every time I wash them ( even with bands in it) the hair at the tip undoes itself and loosens up.

backcomb your hair until you cant hold it in your finger. that way, the tip is dreaded as much as you can.
then work wax into the ends, but dont use so much you can see it. a residue is what your striving for, and is what looks best (so there isnt yello wax in your dreads)
keep finger rolling the dreads until theyre hard everyday. that should work in the loose ends, and mmake your dreads more solid and sexy.
makesure you backcomb the dreads as far as they can go. not just until it hurts. that way, they get fat and dense. and after a while, the ends turn round ish, like it should look.
but yeah, wax sparingly, like if a dread is coming undone.
otherwise, backcomb about 1ce a week, and use (spray lock) and/or lock peppa
make sure you dry your dreads every shower all the way. dry them separately if you have too. (if they dont dry, they mold. )
and dont use rubber bands after they start to lock up. they only hold them back from locking

I don't see the point of backcombing them every week. I mean... if they start to loosen up then yeah, back comb then and knot them up again. I've been knotting up the tips/roots while watching tv or messing on the computer, though, it's normal to have a bit of straight, un-knotted hair at the root right? ( Hair dosn't grow out in knots, it has to knot once it grows )
