The U.S. exports more rice than any other country and our only more valuable cash crop is Cannabis. Fun fact.

lol, PETA is dumb....they want to give the same rights that humans have to animals. They want them to be able to drive cars, get jobs, etc... One thing that could be considered contradictive is the fact that they don't want humans to kill and eat animals, however, I do not believe that there are any PETA members out there that know there are such things as carnivores, like tigers and some birds, most notably penguins.....Humans are coincidentally primates which are in fact an animal.

I enjoy vegetarian dishes a lot... I have some friends who are vegetarians, I think it's a great thing...
But from my upbringing, I just can't make myself stop eating meat. I do it less now, but I still eat it a lot. My mom is the only person on her side of the family that I see on a regular basis, while everybody from my dads side of the family lives near me, and they all are the hunting, fishing, country texas grown guys. But I'm more like my mom. More city based I guess. Listens to good music (60s/70s/ some 80s), isn't boring.
I've wanted to be a vegetarian before, but I can't really force myself to do it without going through withdrawls that I don't feel like going through. I've gone without meat for like a week before, and I was just craving for a big damn steak at the end. As in, ready to walk 5 miles to good steakhouse.

why would you 'want to be a vegetarian'?
Bit of an oxymoron there. Anyone who's a vegetarian is funny. Notice the title of the thread?QuantumBalance wrote: I'm a funny kind of vegetarian now.

One of my friends posted that on their myspace blog.1. Rainforests, vital to earth's oxygen supply, are being destroyed at an alarming rate - the top cause is the raising of animals for food
2.A carnivorous diet requires 4200 gallons of water per day; a vegetarian one, 300 gallons per day.
3.A typical hog factory farm generates raw waste equivalent to that of a city of 12,000 people.
4.Malnutrition and starvation will kill approximately 14 million people this year. If Americans reduced their intake of meat by just 10 percent, the land, water and energy freed up from growing livestock feed would feed 100 million people
5.Twenty vegetarians can be fed on the amount of land needed to feed one person on a meat-based diet.
6.About 7 billion farm animals die or are slaughtered each year in the U.S. for the production of flesh food.
7. many studies show that, on average, vegetarians tend to...
have lower blood pressure
be less likely to be overweight
have lower incidince of heart disease and stroke
have lower rates of cancer
have a stronger immune system
be less likely to develop type II diabetes
8.The National Cancer Research Institute found that women who eat meat on a daily basis are almost 4 times more likely to get breast cancer than those women who eat little or no meat.
9.Length of time world's petroleum reserves would last if all human beings ate a meat centred diet: 13 years
...Length of time world's petroleum reserves would last if all human beings ate a vegetarian diet: 260 years
10. animals can feel pain just as well as humans
And it might not be a great thing, but it's definitally a good thing.

several of those facts seem highly suspect to me.
some of them may just need further explanation in order for me to believe them.
such as:
1. why is raising animals for food the top cause of rainforest destruction? explain the connection please.
2. do you mean the total water consumntion for a large group of people per day? or per year? because 4200 gallons of water for one person in a day seems like....a lot of water.
3. this claim may be accurate, but cant waste (if its literal bodily waste from the pigs) be used for fertalizer or other products?
7. i highly doubt all of those health claims are true, and meat is definitely good for you in other ways that vegetables dont provide. thats why most vegetarians are skinny little bitches, or have to eat a lot of processed vitamins.
9. explain the connection between petroleum reserves and meat consumption.
10. this is not true. or if you want to be as exact about it as reducing it just to the actual feeling of pain, sure it may be equal, but it doesnt mean as much to the animal.

1. because rainforests are destroyed for land dealing with grazing. But the silly vegetarians don't realise rainforests are also destroyed for land to grow crops.
2. Lol they mean the amount of water required to make the meat the dude is consuming.
7. Amen roflofl.
9. Petroleum is used in machinery that deals with the creating and slaughter of delicious animals.
10. Amen. And hell, i'm not even religious!

1. 1. This is happening in places such as latin america, and as bad as it is, its going to continue regardless of whether i buy meat from say, australia, or not. The demand people put on australian sources won't have any effect on people in whatever country they are. Deforestation still occurs in australia but you know, I don't think the meat industry has heaps to do it (although I don't have much evidence for it). You've also, got to realise, as i mentioned, that Lots of rainforests are deforested to create orchards and shiz. meat just tastes better, thats all.
3. I don't dig on swine. Pigs are filthy animals.
4. I was going to put it in a better way but i thought pointing out that americans are fat shits really gets the point across...so:
"Thats because Americans are fat shits".
5. We're not japanese, we don't have a deficit of land.
6. Holy Shit? MEAT IS DEAD ANIMALS? WTF WTF YUCK.
7. Most of those diseases can be avoided if you eat healthily. Eating meat doesn't doom you to heart disease lol. I kinda thought that list had something resembling validity until you mentioned type II diabetes. Anyone with half a brain won't get type II diabetes, You don't have to forfeit meat to avoid it.
9. Instead of wasting time just trying to destroy the meat industry, why don't people focus on implementing renewable energy resources? I strongly advocate its use.
10. This point is just fucking stupid. I don't like animal cruelty and whatnot but seriously, its just a rediculous point. Most of negatives of pain I get are the result of emotions felt, and the worry that i'm doing significan't and irrepairable damage to my body. Animals aren't as smart as us, face it. They're brains might have very basic emotions, but they're just not as complex to fully feel the way we do.

It's probably retaliation for the vegetarians who claim that eating meat is "murder." Most people prefer not to be called murders.
Ollie makes a good point about crops. One of the main crops that is replacing rainforest is soy, which is a favourite staple of vegetarians everywhere (tofu, pretend meats, soy milk etc.)
The reality is that no environmental problems have ever been solved by individuals making personal decisions not to be part of the problem, and many have been solved by government legislation. If you really want environmental change, recycling and not eating meat makes almost no difference. You need to support and promote solutions to these problems in politics. That doesn't just mean voting for the appropriate parties, it means getting involved and writing letters to the politicians etc.
If you want your country to be an evironmental leader and you take the personal changes approach, you need almost 100% of people to decide to make the effort. If you take my approach you only need 51% (actually a lot less if they are vocal).
The whole point of governence is making group decisions.

I can somewhat see your first point, but it would be a lot stronger if somebody started a thread titled "meat is murder" or something like that here on modified. But in the actual context of what's going on here, one jaggoff decided to start a thread attacking other people's personal choices.
I'm not really interested in getting into the debate about vegetarianism, I've made my choices, others will make different choices, and that's fine. But calling vegetarians "little bitches" and the various other insults in here? Really not needed.
All I'm saying is, we could all be a little more European.
