I played Hackey sack in Middle school till about 10th grade. Could do like the usual stalls, and Jester. Then stopped for some reason. Started up again when I arrived at college, flitting around various circles that formed spontaneously around campus. Then one day, about 2-3 months ago this kid Tom (who I now kick with twice a week with my friend Drew) came up and asked if he could join our circle; of course we said it was cool. Then he started busting some tiltless/guiltless strings n I was in complete and utter amazement... I mean I guess I knew there were people who were rly good at "Hackey Sack" but I was kinda thinking to myself, or perhaps outloud 'I've never seen anyone do anything like this in real life! my mind was blown clear out of my cranium, headed straight for the cosmos. Anyways, I found Tom on facebook lol n, he, Drew, and I all got together again and he started teaching us the basics (clipper, mirage, pickup...). And it only got better from there! Yay footbag!
Then of course came modified>footbag.org

How did you get started in footbag?

Post by The Rhino »

Hoping to get some cool stories and some insight on how to get some people started on footbag in my area, I'd like to know how all of you got started in footbag.

My story:

I was the third shift cashier at a grocery store called "Family Fare" and at break time a guy named Tim would bust out his mr sandbag freedom footbag and do toe stalls and clipper stalls. all the grocery stockers would get in on the action at break time and circle kick. eventually they invited me into the circle and when I learned toe stall, I was stoked. Tim showed me a place online to get some rod laver tennis shoes like his and also where to buy footbags as well. Made my order, wore the shoes, learned the moves, watched mad videos, and Met Modified. The rest is history.

Here is a pic of me at Family Fare in the beginning of my footbag journey:

also, a pic of my footbag mentor, Tim

So what's your story?

When I was in elementary school, all of my sister's cool, high school friends circle kicked, and I always wanted to. In ninth grade I started to circle kick and just a few months ago I saw my friend freestyling for the the first time and fell in love.

i was always a circle kicker and learnd toe stalls and such but thats not really what got me into footbag. i met rob through my girlfriend and he had already been shredding for a few month. he taught me mirage and stuff he also showed me his abshires and i was so amazed how something so small could do such cool things. i was interested from day 1, i knew it was my destiny.

my girlfriend from 7th grade broke up with me and started dating this guy named Nick Schultz, who was good at hacky sack and skateboarding, and considering the girl I was crazy about chose him over me, I figured he must be a lot cooler than me (and he was) so I wanted to do the stuff he could do. Nick and I were friends through all that, and still are when I run into him, so don't think there was like a jealous rivalry, etc etc. anyway, that's how I got into footbag. I pretty much left trick boarding behind a while back.

i dated brian for a little bit at the beginning of college and we broke up for about a year. then he started seeing his ex-gf and we sort of became friends. brian picked up footbag in the time we were apart. she always complained about how "he goes hacky sack with these guys in short shorts at the skatepark... its sort of gay," and i became interested (nothing better than cuties in short shorts.) when she left him cause he footbagged too much, i snatched him up and we went to midwesterns 06... where i learned to toe stall. about a month after that i hit atw in socks and i fell in love.

I was introduced to circle kicking in grade 7 (about 13 years ago...), and was immediately hooked. I was pretty natural, I guess. I could do, like, 14 kicks with one foot, doing this silly hop thing.
In grade 10, I saw "She's All That", with Chad Devlahovich stunt-doubling for Freddie Prinze (with a Z?) Jr. in a hacky scene. I was so captured that I said that my goal in life was to get better than that! I went home and looked up hacky sack on the internet.
Started freestlying, and hooked up with Hackrifice. Learned really slowly (by today's standards), but had a blast, practiced non-stop, and met my first pro hackers in Chicago, by fluke, like, that same year? (Or two years later?) Dan Klokow and Zeke Ibardaloza of CIC.
Kind of ironically, my first encounter with BAP was Scott Davidson, whom I heard of first that day, since "the second best in the world" was supposed to be there at Navy Pier(?) that day.
First out-of-town tournament was in Regina, in, like 2000 or 2001? And then Shred Zero in the same summer, in Calgary, where I met one of my favourite and most influencial footbaggers, Rob Fuller :)

I got started by hacking.

I was probably the worst hacker you've ever seen.

Now I'm ok.

I could barely hit the sack. i took a break for a couple years until the summer going into my junior year and I bought a hacky sack and started to kick it around then I just kinda kept with it.

Uh in 4th grade, I used to play soccer and stuff, and my best friend and a group of his friends started playing hacky sack, so I had my mom bring me to Galyans (modern day Dick's) and I bought a crocheted bag for a few dollars. So I circle-jerked until freshman year of highschool (which is around 5-6 years of hacky sacking) when I guess I searched hacky sack on google or something. I started freestyling that summer, bought lavers, tricks of the trade, and a sandmaster. I didn't take it very seriously, and ended up quitting around Christmas time. Then around this April/May, I started playing again. So for like the 10-11 months I've been playing, 6 of them I wasn't playing. But the good thing is I'm a lot more serious, committed, and I'm advancing faster than I was before. And that's my story.

It seems as though the common factor among most of you is circle kicking, and in second place, getting your boyfriend back can get you into footbag too.

Perhaps starting a circle kicking "hacky sack" club would be a good way to get people into this sport. it worked for us.

More stories please!

I started playing "sipa" when I was 8 or 9, (we only used inside, outside and crossbody sole kicks) back then I was still living in the Philippines. We played with a metal washer (w/ some strands from sacks they used to store rice grains burned on to it for balance). Yeah, really cheap :P

Then, mid-Sophomore year of High School, I got invited by my friend to play hacky with his friends. They were upperclassmen so I hesitated, thinking I'll make a fool of myself and I've never played the game before.

I looked so stupid asking: "So...uh...what's the rules?". They scoffed at me and said just kick it and don't let it drop. When the bag came to me, I just thought to myself, "screw it, I've already embarassed myself".

So I just kicked it like a sipa. Turns out, I was better at hacky than any of them. It felt really good. I got more confident and I was hooked.

I played in circle hacks until junior year. Only then did it occur to me to research it online. Then I found vids on youtube like the Gravity Man DVD, vids from flipsider, and of course, vids of Vasek

And now I'm here on modified...reading and reading and reading, until I find myself staring at the computer screen the next morning.

Next school year (senior year XD), I plan on starting a footbag club at school. Even the vice-principal was interested! I've already got three confirmed members and about ten interested people. I'm still looking for more members. Wish me luck.

oh and by the way, awesome thread, Paul

Played soccer for 9 years. Hacky sacked a TON for bout 3 years, then stopped my senior year in high school. Started hacking again in college.

One night I was hacking outside the 7-11 on campus and this guy in sandals walks up and asks to see the hack and introduces himself as Tom. He busts out something like pixie ducking clipper, and my mind is blown just seeing new tricks with a hacky sack! I remember Tom telling me about these 'special shoes' that help with footbag. So I went home, checked out this mysterious 'rod laver' brand of shoes, and some videos, and was hooked.
