Worlds: Routine Music Restrictions

I was just browsing the World's page and stumbled upon this:

Music restrictions

Music to be used at this event and on the Disney Sports Complex has to be of an innocent nature. Music with profanities, racism, battery or other inappropriate lyrics is not allowed or tolerated by the IFPA or Disney Sports Complex. Players found playing with such music will be disqualified from the event and could be barred from the complex by Disney. Disney and the IFPA hold the right to pull the plug on any routine with inappropriate music. Be warned. If you have music that is close to the edge, pick something else to keep in standing with our Disney surroundings and IFPA rules. Copyright approval not required.

I hadn't seen such restrictions before..

disney wants it to be family friendly. I think that's cool. come to terra verde for all your non-family friendly activities

including music with swearing and your own alcohol.

trying to stay mostly on topic, does anyone know how much copyright approval would cost? For example let's say that I wanted to do three routines (qualif / semi / final) with a fairly recent billboard hit, how much would that set me back?

I honestly have no idea how copyright approvals work nor how much they cost.

My priority was always player-friendly competitions, the more I hear about Worlds this year, the more I am glad I refused to run the freestyle..
Plus the kids will hear swear words anyway, it's just a matter of time.. It's completely foolish to think that such a limitation for the players will do any "public good..."

Matt Cross, I'm with you on this one. Moglum, yes, people will hear swears. But it's not the end of the world to tame music down a bit to make the show more family friendly. Does my toddler hear me swear? Sure. Do I let him listen to Tupac all day long? No. Big deal. It's frikkin Disney World for god's sake.

Max, I think we have no problems using copywritten songs until we start charging admission to view our routines. I mean, Disney may charge admission into the complex, so if it's any issue I think it's their liability. I'm pretty sure the record companies are cool with us kicking to their songs, even publicly, even competitively, as long as they're not losing money on it.

It is my hope that some of the inherent lamenesses of our chosen venue will be countered by as many awesomenesses... exposure, site cohesion, hotel proximity, et al.

Actually, I think you're wrong. Footbaggers will be doing a public performance using a copy written song. I'm pretty sure that falls well within the bounds of what copyright law governs.

regarding the sideline discussion: I'm not quite sure what to think of the venue but I have to agree with Matt that it's the players that make the event (and parties), not the venue.

Maybe I am biased a bit, since I party with Vasek every other day

I didn't mean to say Worlds will totaly suck, it just that I like a different kind of event, than it will probably be. And that is why I am proud and happy to organize Worlds '08
