Anz's new stretching video reminded me of an idea I had before, not sure if it was ever discussed here.
Like a lot of people here, I can be impatient and lazy sometimes and I don't always take the time stretch and warm up with basics like I should for every session. And when I do warm up, I don't always do it for as long as I should either, cause honestly it's boring. So to help with those 2 problems, a practice session music CD/playlist could be used.
So basically you pick songs to stretch and warm up to, and play it at the beginning of each session. Once you're done you can play another cd/playlist to cool down.
The songs work as a checklist ie structure, associating each song with a part of your routine and reminding you what to do next. You just do each part of your plan till the song or songs are over, rather than having to keep track of the how long you've gone for and forcing yourself to keep going.
You'll be more entertained and it will easier to fight/ignore the temptation to just start shredding right away. I'm sure this'll make warming up and cooling down feel more like casual and fun parts of your practice routine, rather than chores you have to put up with every session.
You can use songs you like to get you in the mood and motivated, such as songs from your favorite shred videos. Make a new list every once in a while to mix it up and keep it fun and interesting.
Here's an example:
Warm up CD:
Song 1: basic kicks and stalls
Songs 2, 3, 4: stretching
Songs 5, 6: tiltless drills
Songs 7, 8: bop drills
Songs 9, 10: genuine drills
-> Go practice whatever you had planned or feel like doing, and then
Cool down CD:
Songs 1, 2: dexless/spinning drills
Songs 3, 4, 5: stretching
