Field's Fabrics - Dijon Review

Post by Eskimo Joe »

Well I got may latest order from fields, and I must say I am pleased with the Cameo and Navajo Turquoise, but the Dijon is way too thick. It almost seems like it is not ultrasuede light.

It reminds me of spanish gold, but thicker and stiffer. This material is about 2 to 2.5 times thicker than the cameo. It also reminds me of buck skin or deer skin.

So if you are thinking of ordering it, don't. Stupid me bought a half yard b/c it was on sale.

Just stitch the material as a complete solid colored footbag. No material is un-useable (save for Soft Ivy - dark, really thick, pilly on bad end, and I guess Aqua and whatever facile I told people not to buy). People had the same views for Spanish Gold in the past, but I think that facile color is good all in its own.

I also use Ultrasuede Soft in some bags, which are marginally thicker than Light in comparison. I don't know. You be the judge.

If it is that thick, then it is not ultrasuede light. Sorry to say.

You can make some good juggling bags with it, or some nice 4 or 12 panels to give to aspiring hackers. Or something cool like a pillow /ipod holder etc.
I wouldnt use it to make footbags, unlessa person wants an indestructible, unbreakinable bag.

Yeah, I was thinking that it is not Ultrasuede Light, but the receipt says that it is. Also it is listed in their sale section as ultrasuede light.

Perhaps they sent me ultrasuede soft by accident.

People at Field's are idiots. Or the people making some of these colors are idiots. I don't know.

Soft Ivy isn't ultrasuede light, since it's so very thick, but they've had it listed under Ultrasuede Light for so long it's hard to argue with them.

Or rather, we expect to use ultrasuede light to make footbags, and have high expectations for the material on its performance and playability. So, our observations are actually pretty awkward considering this fabric is probably used only for clothing, apparel and accessories. Light or Soft, their applications weren't originally made for the strenuous wear and tear of footbag play.

im also curious why different colors have such different qualities in terms of thickness and pilling and stuff like that. do you have any idea waylon? i'd assume it would be the exact same material, just dyed different colors, but clearly not the case...

I have no idea. Maybe it has something to do with the different types of color treaments that each dye goes through when interacting with the material. I do know that red and black dyes are very potent. By reconfiguring the chemical outlook to adjust the color textures of some would need to reconfigure the marginal thickness of the base, ie. the fabric, to make it feasible.

Like, let's say Flash Red is used with a true 'red dye' that has been treated over and over to make it truly red. But for colors like, say, Opal and Rapture Rose, they would need to undergo a different process altogether.

I'm no expert about this, so I'm just making a presumption. In a way, I'm still a bit bewildered that, even through lukewarm and sometimes hot water, Flash Red didn't really wash away some of it's red dye through the washing process, but with other types of fabric or leather, it has. The dye has washed off if you use a powerful soap, like Lever 2000 and such (at least that's what I've been told.

Different strokes for different folks? And by folks, I mean facile.
