hey. . . pixie muted clipper is fun.
 * > ripwalk bs
 * > blur bs
:?: * > merkon rpt (so close)

where * = pixie muted clipper. . . obviously

@ Matt - Hey thanks for the post, man. Glad to hear you're having a blast at pre-Worlds. Beer and bud for breakfast. . . it's the one of legball champions. Wish I could be there.

Speaking of wishing I were somewhere else: : yeah so I got a call from a friend during my real short session just now and it kinda left me in a bad mood. My friends seem to be getting stuck in some lame routines and they seem like they're rushing back to colleges (and the military). I suppose I might be doing the same if I HAD a college career. For those of you who don't know this is my university status as it stands:

Freshman (first semester) - Nazareth College - Rochester, NY
Freshman (second semester) - Siena College - Albany, NY
Sophmore Year - UCC - Cork, Ireland
Junior Year - I'll be going back to Siena

So there you have it. I'm a nomad academic. I really haven't had much of a college life. So anyway, tonight made me really want to be somewhere else if my crew hadn't finally decided to come over tonight. I was so close to just going home, running my head under the shower head, grabbing my passport, and hitting the road for Kingston ON and crash at my friend Chris' house for the weekend.

So anyway I'm blogging and listening to some mellow hip hop and I'm probably going to pluck the guitar a little while watching some TV while I wait for a few of my pals to come over. There's a line in a phi life cypher song that goes "Your style's as fake as a black mona lisa". I bet I could use that in a shred circle. it makes me laugh.

Oh but I still love footbag. This isn't a depressed entry, by the way. I'm just kind of pensive. And I'd like a nice cup of hot chocolate if I had the means. Hot Chocolate kicks ass.

 not sure of the technics of this (what it's called) but it's like gyro symposium mirage. Spyro mirage? Yeah well it'll be hit bs today.

D'ank and I were in enemy territory hitting pavement with our hack tricks. We were at the skatepark for a while but then when we figured you were busy or something we went to the Chick N' Wing Festival at the Inner Harbor. It was crazy. Pretty much everyone in Syracuse was there. Wish ya coulda come, man. What happened with your phone? I'll read your PM after this and probably call you tomorrow.

Yeah so it was a good session. Doug was good enough to come to Syracuse on a whim and we played QUITE a BIT. It was a rollercoaster of playing well throughout the evening, but overall both of us were playing well. Doug's toe shuffling is something of legend and his strings in general are getting more impressive. He very rarely ever bails to toe and is using everything he knows in his strings. Pretty inspiring. It's going to be scary what this kid will do in a year. . . or less.

I wish I could remember some of my better runs but I really can't and am too tired to try and remember. But lots of spinning, lots of ducking, lots of stepping shuffling, and some more intense links I rarely do like pdx drifter > torque (that's one. Ah yes I remember. Damn that hurt my knee) and blur > pixie whirl > spinning butter. I'm incredibly close to the following developments:
 vertigo bs
 nova (super nova?)
 atomic illusion b2b

People were very supportive of us being there. Every other crowd of peopel who walked by would go, "Oooh! That's incredible!" We scored 4 dollars. Could've had 6 but we were being modest and dumb and didn't take the money when these kids tried to give it to us. That was my bad. I hate taking money for playing. I tried to make them play instead but whatever. They enjoyed watching. Glad we could give the people something to drink shitty watered down beer to. We also kind of stole two bottles of water at the end, which was funny. We were waiting in this "line" after the event was over and people were packing up and we were wondering who to pay and Doug and I just stared at each other and just sort of walked off with water. Then Doug goes, "I knew I should've taken two bottles". At which point we walked back to our cars and talked footbag for another like 20 minutes or something. That's great. I love footbag players. You can talk about literally ANYTHING if you're friends enough. Normal chat and then if footbag ever comes up BAM it's all good. No one to shake their head and say, "Ugh. Footbag AGAIN!? Don't you ever think of anything ELSE!?"

So it was a good night. Really too bad Ben couldn't make it. I'll get to the bottom of that, though. I bet he lost his phone or something. I've got nothing on the calendar, though, so hey. Shred tomorrow? Perhaps. I've been downing water like a demon so I should be good to go tomorrow.

I completely forgot about STREET HACKY! I felt like Matt Cross being the voice of footbag on the side of any given street. It was great. Again, if only I had had a POWER BAR! I could've thrown down long strings longer like you. Bah. That's alright, though. Being tired just makes me use spins more and solidify whirls and stuff since spins, BOPs, and whirls are pretty much all I can do if my legs are jello.

I forgot to mention the two sick 3's I had down at the end of the session. They weren't the hardest links I could do but I said they'd be stylie. Nothing to scoff at, I'd say. So I hit blizzard > pixie muted clip > merkon for one of them and the other was tapdown > dyno > pdx whirl . . . Yeah. I liked the first one better. Now that I think about it I should've made the dyno symplified. That'd've been a bit harder and a little cooler looking I'd say. Oh and I was also trying far symp. reverse whirling swirl. both sides. And it's the same ol' same ol' . So close. Yet so not fast enough with the swirl.

SESSION WITH BEN TONIGHT! I'm going to ride my bike to the spot. Which means I should probably leave within the hour. It's gonna take a while. We don't live that far from each other but it's still going to be a crazy bike ride. Loooong stretch of a busy road. Film?

I really hope people read this entry and watch this. It's a really cool video on youtube. I try to show as many people as I can and I've always wanted to post a link somewhere in my blog.

The song in it is called Through the Looking Glass by one of my favorite bands, Machinae Supremacy. It's a song I'd really like to use in a footbag video if I ever get a chance to be in one either of me a part of it or being specifically for me. It's a pretty sweet song. Actually there are a bunch of MS songs I'd like to use in a footbag video.

Hmm. Um. Here's another song of theirs I'd like:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=AqZVp752EUo

it's called The Great Gianna Sisters. Give it time. It's a long song but it keeps getting better. . . I think anyway.

oh and sorry this hasn't been all that much about footbag. I'm really kinda hurting from the 4+ hour session the other day with D'ank. My right lower calf is hurting me in a big way. Sucks. So I played for like a half an hour today but it wasn't worth it except I hit almost every atomic trick I know more or less first try each. So that would be: (both sides, mind you)
tapdown
tap
legbeater
atom smasher
atomic illusion
atomic pickup
atomic legover
flux
atomic ss and op reverse whirl

oh um I forgot I can hit atomic dyno bs too but didn't get to that. I was kind of wanting to leave and stop playing so I just packed up and left after the fluxes were hit.

k so massive day today. I woke up a little later than I thought, said bye to a friend who's off to school in a couple days, and just kind of ate some food and surfed the interweb for a while. Good morning. Then I decide it might be best if I go out to Rochester a bit early. . see if Doug wants to play a little before 7. Of course he does.

So he has to do some things before he can come out and play so I decide to go to the mall in Rochester. I haven't been there in a while. See what's the deal with that place. So I go to a media store and browse around for a bit and head over to the gaming section. . that's how I roll. I notice they have some wii boxes. "huh. I say. Syracuse places usually don't put wii boxes out unless they HAVE wii's. I wonder." so I go up to the counter and BAM in a pink and black box the words "WE HAVE WII CONSOLES!!!" smiling right at me. Now I had just about given up hope of getting a wii till the fall or after the winter BUT the urge to get one never died so what do I do? I get a wii. Right then and there. Ballsy move. But I did it.

So now I have a wii. The phone rings and it's Doug. He's all done getting his errands run and he can hack now. So that's just dandy. I'm all pumped about the wii so I'm ready. We go to the Erie Canal around this covert and start shredding. It was humid. We were playing pretty well. I was playing really well I thought and Doug's pixies were troublesome for him and he was trying to go tiltless for long strings which for the most part were very geniune and controlled and very impressive. Then he hits porque and it's on now. Second try, was it, Doug? Crazy.

7:00pm rolls around and it's time to meet Jeff and Mike at the University. My strings weren't nearly as long and easy but I wasn't playing too badly today. I had a string that began with dimwalk > ripwalk > blur > legbeater and I had a couple strings with spinning pdx mirage placed well enough and executed so I didn't trip over my own feet and die. I was flailing today too! Symp bubba almost bs and pdx flail again (first try!! ) . . let's see. beta blur. probably could've bsos'd it but it was at the end of the session and I was at 20% energy and skill. Sucked. I also hit gyro symposium mirage both sides. And Mike and Doug hit it too after I had. It was pretty funny, actually. I hit it, then the bag came around to Mike and then he got it. And then Doug hit it. Then it came around to me a couple times later and I hit it on my flipside and then Mike did it on his other side as well when it came back to him. It was a special moment.

The session ended with me more or less utterly spent (it was looking bleak about an hour before we actually stopped) and we parted ways. It was cool that Mike could stay till the bitter end. Who knows the next time I'll be able to shred with him :? . Anyway I'm really tired and I'd like to write more about the others. I'll do what I can: Doug was playing his usual game. Awesome stuff. Jeff is looking better and better. He got some helpful tips from Mike and it's just time for him to drill and get used to the rhythm of stall > set > dex for things like legovers and mirages. He's got real good crank. It's going to be cool to see him in like 4 or 5 months. Hope he practices. And I hope he has a fun time playing. He doesn't say much . . . then again I guess I never really said anything when I started out playing. Just kept quiet and watched. Meh. And MIKE ANELLO! Man oh man this guy. A machine. He managed merkon > DSO bsos among a massive drill I keep forgetting about that includes terrage and barrage bsos strung together with a smear? or is it a dimwalk? Or both? I can never capture it in my head. It's amazing whatever it is. It's intense. He was hitting the stepping set tonight and I hope I was some help getting him used to some mental blockages that are giving him a hard time when it comes to conseq ripwalks and blurs and so on. By the end of the night, though, there were some clear improvements in his stepping and he was able to hit blur bsos midstring and with real good form. It's still high energy for him. that's stepping for ya.

Anyway I came back to Syracuse, strapped in my wii and played for a bit. This is a fun little toy. I played wii tennis and golf for a bit but I'm starting to get a bit hazy tired so I'm off to bed. Definitely taking tomorrow off from footbag. I'm probably not even going to check modified. Afterall! I have a wii! Aaaand I haven't skated in a while. I might reserve tomorrow for the skateboard and the wii. . . and eating. . . Zzzzz

 spinning rake bs (first try each)
 helix
 footed terrawhirl
 clip > duck in/out > same out/in > opp toe delay. Weaving bubba? Anyway and then I did it so that I ended on an inside delay since that's what I do with bubbas.
 a repeat Paul Agostinelli told me I should try: reverse whirl > far reverse whirl rpt. I'll do it symposium tomorrow. 8)
 bubba beater bsos . . . finally. This has been a problem for a while. Finally nailed it.

my blue and blue Tough Twelve has a hole in it!!!! a small hole. Patched. Problem solved.

um well here's the deal gumshoe. I'm free and lounging all day up until 6 when I have to go to the airport, pick up an aunt of mine, and DRIVE HER ALL THE WAY TO Alexandria Bay where'd I'd like to play some footbag at the nice little pavilion place I played at the other day. It was quite nice. It had a potty and a drinkin' hole and lots uh people to stare at me.

so if you can come out to the syracuse region before then with time enough to shred then that'd be fantastic. But it's going to feel weird playing with you knowing I won't be playing for like 8 hours. But it's your call. Are you free some other days this week?

I had a session with Ben. What a shitty, shitty day in Syracuse it was for weather. Average temperature was 64 degrees (17 of the celsius meter). What bollocks. Anyway we played, I wasn't doing TOO bad at first but then was sucking it up for a while. Bag kept getting caught in my shorts. Usually happens every now and then but this was pretty ridiculous. Um. I hit something new today but I can't remember what it was so it obviously wasn't all that important and so I'm going to forget it. End.

just got done with a couple rounds of wii golf with my buddy before he had to go out with his cooler friends and probably drink heavily. I soundly beat him with a respectable +2 over par for 9 holes. Best game of wii golf I've had. It felt reeeel good. The wiimote wasn't wonking out whenever I swing which is sometimes the case if you don't make a more exaggerated motion on the upswing. The sensor won't read it at first and then when it reads you swinging down it gets all fucked up and it'll more than likely slice the ball. I love my little wii. I love my big longboard. I love to kick my footbag. I don't like it when people wear hats and leave the brim of the hat really flat and stiff and think they're suave as shit. They're just lazy. I'll show them.

my lavers are dying. I don't know how many more layers of shoe goo I can slap on it and have it make a difference. I'm prepping my new lavers as we speak. Hopefully the next couple days I can break them in so I can use them like BUTTER for the fair session.

session with Ben. Kinda sucked for me. I had about 5 or 6 good runs. Skated beforehand and that probably was the factor that made my footbag game suffer. See when I surf the quarter pipes I get real low and twist a lot of my weight all the time on my knees. So longboarding and then expecting to do well with footbag is a little much. But anyway it was a fun session and I had a really good pixie run using both sides and a couple other tripless links. Pretty intense. Ben almost hit helix on the side he's never hit reverse whirl on. Without knowing it. He doesn't believe me. It was funny. But not as funny as Ben's unicycle. That thing is pimp. And that's the first time I've ever used the word "pimp" to describe something in all seriousness.

ugh this is a sucky post. Sorry. Peace. I'll play more footbag these next couple days up in Alexandria Bay and see if I can do anything special. :?

The Great New York State Fair. There's more to say about today than I have ambition and energy to write. BUT I'll do what I can. It's going to be focused mostly on my but Ben and Doug played really well today. It was all very intimidating and fun.

New Trick:
 amadeus (second try. Just thought about it yesterday and decided to give it a try. It's pretty easy and hard to make look good. But I did it and I'd like to do it more often midstring) - oh. It's gyro da da curve if you guys didn't know. Meh. I enjoyed it.
 double switchover bs :?. Pretty embarrassed it's taken my this long. . .

New Links:
 osis > pdx whirl rpt x4 or 5 times.
 phoenix > ripwalk on command from Doug in a BATTLE

actually I hit a lot of new long links that were pretty cool. Just can't remember.

Doug checked me on my blenders and thinks I'm not dexing. I disagree but I'm not looking at the bag or my leg and so I'm 90% sure he's right. But that 10% is fighting every bit of it. Ben was on the phone during this. A second opinion would've been nice. It feels like it's going around. Just really really fast. Damn. I hate blenders.

We got about 12 dollars busking. Some guy gave us 5 dollars.
8O. And when we came back with Ben we played and this kid comes over and he seemed genuinely interested in footbag so I gave him my information packet I got when I ordered my footfighter from freedomfootbags. I wish I had like 20 of those things.

my footfighter - it's sweet. I like amaretta a lot. It's a bizarre thing. So soft and so silky but it'll stick to your foot. Huh. Anyway we played with it loads today so it got a chance to break in a bit. It's going to be a choice bag when it does. It'll be my nicest footfighter I've ever had, for sure.

my knees - not bad. I drank a lot of water and went back to my house for an hour or so and played wii and relaxed. Every once in a while I'd have a flash of common sense and I'd step out of the triangle of shred and rest a bit. I probably could've done that more. It's too tempting playing with Ben and Doug to just keep going until something snaps or it's time to go.

caffeine - not much! Most of the shred today was caffeine-free! I drank a Monster after the wii break and so I'd say the first hour or two of Shred Part II was urged on artificially. I'd really like to not drink caffeine things when I play footbag. For some reason it feels like cheating or unhealthy or lame. But. .. I spin so much better sugar high. Ugh. Sooo much better. I saw someone drinking a monster on the random shred video from worlds so I don't feel quite so bad. And people talk about caffeine before sessions in other threads. I'm not the only one. I think Chris Dean has had coffee before before sessions. I know he's had this Px Energy tea thing one time I played with him and Jeff and Doug at RIT. just another thing I think way too much about.

anyway it was an awesome day. They want to come back to the fair and do it again. I'd be down with that.

Legball twisting!!

My quantums are coming back from retirement. I ripped out the soles to my vans old schools and put them in the quantums. Yay for soles!

Reasons for doing this:
1. My new lavers aren't nearly ready and I hate playing with stiff lavers.
2. They're fine. They just need a little shoe goo on the bottoms to keep them from ripping in two. I'll do that the night before the next fair session.
3. Spread the love. The more shoes I have available to me, the more I can spread out the usage of each, which will make them last longer.

anyway this means that I have to get used to the slippery toe box and NO TRACTION of the quantum v.1.0 . . . I'd really like to get Q2's. But I just got those new lavers. Meh. Maybe next year I can pick up a pair. Till then I've got some mighty light-weight, sleek black shredding kicks I can use.

I'm in Alexandria Bay and I just had a 20 minute session but I realized I needed lunch badly so I just ate and now I'm thinking about going back for a bit more playtime. It's pretty boring here being my age. Too old for 90% of the "kids" here and I don't come here often enough to get to know people and form bonds. Whatever. I'll play footbag and freak some people out and maybe someone will talk to me. I'm awesome.

peace. Oh. Check the bags and equipment thread about 12 panels. It's the funniest thing ever. "Who's up to the challenge of making 12 panel bags". . . . . Ben Rea. . . Ben Rea. . . I thought it was funny, anyway. Hey Ben - Chuching!! 8)

Fair Session #2 write-up: starring myself and Doug Tank.

started a bit later and took some pretty spread out breaks. I think we went to 5 different places to play all around the fairgrounds. We still played entirely way too much footbag.

Chapter 1: The Midway
We played at first in the middle of EVERYONE in the busiest part of the fair. Got a lot of attention. Most of it positive. For the most part we were both off our games. Doug hit a nice long string with near DLO bsos and torque while I was getting some fresh and delicious lemonade (not sure if lemonade is bad for footbag but they didn't have water).

Chapter 2: The BMX/Skateboarding Demo
There was this BMX/Skateboarding expo at one point and we were eating and drinking and resting up before it started. We were going to shred next to the bleachers and see if we can get the attention of some Xtreme people. We were still technically resting but we moved into this tent area where they were about to be square dancing. Like 40 old people sitting in seats just staring off into space waiting to be led in a good ol' fashion hoedown! So I take out my trusty bag and start doing swirls and reverse swirls and the stuff I do when I'm in my civilian clothes (longer shorts). The old people were terribly confused by me and probably wished to write a formal complaint to the owners. I also almost took out a guy with a flip far symple swirl. Oops. So instead we decided to actually shred. Doug was done eating. I was done drinking. So we go next to the BMX show and I started playing the best I played all day. It was my favorite part of the day. The announcer guy was pretty cool. Every once in a while he'd mention us: "Hey we've got those hacky sackers still going at it over there. They're killin' it over there!" Fucking A we were killing it. We were killing the rules of gravity. . . and um. So were they. With their bicycles and wheelboards. We stopped playing and watched the show. They're good at what they do. Maximum Velocity. That's what it was. That's the name of their Crew.

Chapter 3: Return to the Greek Pillar place
We went back to the place that produced the most money for us. Yeah. We were busking again. Played pretty well. Hit a couple new easy things just for laughs. Very spinny part of the day for me. I had a string with a lot of the spinning tricks I can do all in one string. Spinning clip, butterfly, mirage, pdx mirage, osis, zooming. I didn't include my spinning whirls and reverse whirls, my spinning ducking, and merkon and stuff. Shrug.

Chapter 4: The hacker that was to be King
Like a sniper, I find this circle-kicker hacking alone near the NYS Parks exhibit and I'm like BAM! HACKY SACK! But we were comfortably eating our dip'n'dots ice cream so we couldn't make a move on the kid and show him the shred. So instead we decided to be really sketchy and follow him around a bit with our heads close to our cups of dip'n'dots and our chatter kept to a sneaky whisper. Unfortunately, the dots proved to be colder than we had anticipated and it took us a really long time to finish. So by the time we were done the hacker left.
I spotted him a mile away again about 5 minutes later and we decided it was time to throw down. Our pants. And play footbag. But he didn't get the hint and left with his family and we were left playing for the rest of the night under low light and hardly any energy. Milk was a bad choice.

Chapter 5: Punk Rock, swirling sets, and "Who has a piece of paper?"
For the most part this session wasn't very good. We were both completely spent with energy. Doug's hip flexor (?) was starting to give him pain. But what it lacked in overall string goodness it more than made up for the fact that I unlocked the quantum set and got a pretty solid flipside nuclear set. Incredible display of skill. My quantum set? Sure it took me longer than 90% of footbag players to get, but it's a pretty incredible set I've got. When it gets off, more often than not it's high enough to do most things and it's pretty low energy. So it seems I've just kind of skipped over the whole "Oof it's kinda there. Just gotta push harder! GHA!" And I don't have much of a flipside, meaning it's not that bad. I could probably get a solid flip in a couple weeks. It just requires a bit more wild flailing on the part of my dexing leg. A bit less controlled. But I think I can get it.

And this guy with a mohawk comes over to ask if we had cell phones so he could call his girlfriend. We didn't want to give him our phones but we didn't want to be stabbed so we said we didn't have cell phones. So he proceeds to have a conversation with us for like 40 minutes. Everything between punk rock to his dad being a world champion martial arts expert who drank himself to death after getting the world record for number of people knocked down in a row with a single punch (24 I think it was? Something crazy like that). And he also has a really short temper. He had some nutty stories to tell. We decided we should be super agreeable with this guy. And we were. Thank god I love punk rock music and could shoot the breeze with him about that, earn some trust, and mouth off a bit against emo and goth people. It was fun. We were on his good side. He said we'd be really cool to smoke a bowl with. About five times he said this. Don't get me wrong. We are. But he said it so many times it was just funny to me. He really needed to get stoned.

Epilogue - We bought a tub of cheese fries and ate it. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the cheese was evenly distributed over the whole tub and not just on the top. It sucks to no end when you get cheese fries and the cheese was only on the top 6 fries. Lots of cheese. It was good.

Tips earned through busking - $5 and some change. A lot of change. We were robbed in the beginning of chapter 5 by a bunch of people. I'm guessing if they hadn't stolen some form us we'd be closer to 10 or 12 dollars. We had some really good contributors in chapter 3.

Tricks hit - (me)
 slapdown
 tripwalk
 matador again (4th time I think)
 footed flip matador
 diving rake
 ducking rake
 swirling set? It may have been the. . . not sure. low light. Wasn't really looking.

Links - Doug won't remember so I'll give him credit where it deserves. He hit double atw out/in and then in/out same foot. And blur > tripwalk > string 8O super clean and really controlled. Terrage b2b again. That barrage bsos with a torque all one string. Whirl > drifter > whirl > ducking clipper > string. Assassin midstring. Pixie ducking legover back to back ALMOST. He footed the second one. Effortless.

Can't remember what else. So yeah. Doug. There ya go. As for me I can't really remember any strings I did that need to be mentioned. I was playing pretty much at the top of my game during the BMX show and I wish I could remember what I did. :?

MASSIVE POST. I hope you enjoyed it. I'm off to go to lunch with my aunts.

hackey sack stalking, bmx footbag tricks, and the son of John "the mountain man" Walsh make for quite an epic day of footbag at the fair. I thought it was funny when my friend asked "what time did u get there?" and I said, "2:00" and then she asked, "what time did u get home?" and I said, "2:00" .

Oh and for all you non-Syracusianites, dont go expecting to get "dippin dots", they serve "itty bits." Damn u and ur pseudo futuristic ice cream! :P

You have less than 1000 dollars for a semester of college. Meal plans set, but school books are a bunch of hundreds of dollars and cars are expensive to keep moving.

So. . .

would YOU go to Funtastiks? Or the camping jam Mosher's putting on?

*important note: I won't be in a hotel. I'll most likely find a place where I won't get arrested and I'll sleep in my car to save every penny I can.
