those vasek videos were in divx though...divx is sweet...i wish all videos were in divx. If you don't have it, just go to www.divx.com/divx. It's much higher quality and much lower file size than anything else i've been exposed to. It probably would have been easier to just get the divx codec instead of converting them to mpgs chan...

ah...makes sense. My computer's actually pretty shitty too though...amd 450 mhz with 96 megs of ram...but divx still works pretty well. However, quicktime...that's a whole other story. It seriously takes a few minutes to open up quicktime to watch something. It's wicked annoying.

you guys are lucky. I'm still battling it out with my PII 350. Luckily I did manage to scab 256 Mo of RAM at work and a 19 inch monitor (and that really rocks) :))

DIV X SUCKS(unless your ripping a feature length film).
WMV SUCKS(unless your file is over 2 minutes).
MPEG RULES(for short videos).

How is mpeg better than divx? There's like no quality difference, and divx is much lower file size...I don't get how mpeg rules over divx...

I had a feeling I'd have to back this up :( Here's my rant:
First of all, with Divx you have to download and install the stupid player. Why does one codec need it's own player?? Talk about annoying and silly, never mind system resource demanding and not to mention that if your not careful about your download you'll install the adware version :( Divx was (originally)developed as an open source alternative to DVD and is meant to be used for ripping movies onto a single 650 meg CD. *It doesn't stream* and doesn't offer *any* significant file size advantage over any of the other codec's mentioned(unless you're doing a feature length film). In fact, in most cases, it fairs worse for smaller length video.
How many video's have you converted to Divx, OneWeak?? Or are you just going by what you see on people's web sites? I thought so.
Here, I'll give you some examples:
My css3 video:
30 meg .WMV
50 meg MPEG
100 meg DIVX

My CSS2a video:
50 meg .WMV
120 meg MPEG(encoded at a slightly higher bit rate)
225 meg DIVX

Ales Zelinka's Nemesis:
1 meg DIVX
700 meg MPEG

One more:
Ryan Mulroney's 2000 World's routine:
10 meg MPEG
20 meg DIVX

MPEG streams(plays before it finshes downloading), requires no stupid proprietary player, has *better* picture quality(IMO), and is a smaller file size to boot! And it's plays on virtually any platform.
This is all not say that DIVX doesn't have it's place. I very well could be messing something up on my converstions that results in the poor file size's in my experiment's. But I doubt it. I've spent many hours working on this very problem. Even if I am screwing something up, the file size benfit is a bad joke, really, compared to how un-standard it is. The single fact that it doesn't stream is enough to make me say "F**K DIVX".

In my perfect world, people would use:
--- .wmv (.asf is a cooler extension if you ask me, and it's the same codec) ONLY WHEN THE FILE IS OVER 2 MINUTES - .WMV is useless and M$ proprietary for anything under 2 minutes as you can achieve similar file size results from using good ole MPEG-1 without the hassle of forcing your users to use Media Player(and download the new codec if it isn't already) AND they make it next to impossible to frame-by-frame .wmv.
--- People would only use DIVX if they were distributing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon(**never** for a 10 second clip of a footag move!)
--- They'd never use Quicktime for a damn thing(I converted every 40 meg QT file of the 2001 freestyle routines on footbag.org to *10* meg MPEG's).
--- And they'd use MPEG-1 for damn near everything else.

OK, now I've wasted waay too much on this, so I'm going to stop now. Anyone care to argue with impeccable logic??

PS - I'm really very nice in person, but when behind an internet connection, I turn into a know-it-all asshole :D
