Sandbagging inc.

Post by Ian Brill »

Yo Dogz,

So I've been playing footbag on and off since around 1994, and I only competed once. I was intermediate. I placed first day one and 3rd day 2. Since then I feel I have gotten much better, but in all honesty I don't think there is any question about wether or not I am an intermediate player. I am certainly not a pro, though I would like to one day at least be able hit BAP drill

Anyway, I am thinking about competing in intermediate at Funtastik, mostly because I want to improve my game and I thought it would make me rise to the occasion.

So if you know me (East Coasters...) tell me what you think. Appropriate? Worth it?

Edit: I mostly bop but I can hit fliers and some ducking/stepping tricks.

That's all. I don't want to sandbag, and I certainly can't compete novice.

One other question: what is the typical Funtastik intermediate routine length?

I don't believe it's 2 minutes. If it was I would try it. One minute would probably be long enough to choreograph something interesting. Meanwhile I will search.

Edit: 1.5 minutes. Excellent.

Hmm. I appreciate your response but I question the qualifications for your assumption that amateur competition is not challenge enough or perhaps even a challenge? Especially for someone of my level.

I assumed that by your description you were guiltless.

EDIT: Eh fuck it, don't listen to me. Go intermediate.

Hey, real fast before I bore you:

I am guiltless as long as I do A LOT of bopping. I feel I could bop for almost a minute. That's why I want to make sure I am not TOO good. I'm trying to be fair but it would be pointless to go open. So either I don't compete until I'm ready for open or I kick intermediate.

Thanks.

I say go intermediate, if your guiltless shred is mostly BOPs.
The players who were top in intermediate at Worlds this year hit tricks like ripped warrior and whirlygig and wetdream and stuff (not in competition, mind you).

intermediates don't BOP for a minute IMO, but again don't listen to me because who the fuck am I.

Personally, I will compete intermediate from now on because for some reason the intermediate level has just risen like 15 steps all of a sudden after worlds. Most of my shred is BOPS and I've gotten "not last" in open, but fuck it. I'll get way more experience from beating noobs and feeling good about winning for once.

Thanks Eric, You are telling me exactly what I want to hear or at least you are outlining exactly what I am thinking.

Of course I did not post this specifically to confirm my assumptions so if there is anyone who thinks otherwise or that I should just not compete I welcome your suggestions and opinions.

Seriously, no offense, but after watching worlds footage I feel like you may have just described a novice, unless I am wrong (which is quite possible-thus this thread!)
habitat wrote:I didn't know I could go from intermediate to open and then back to intermediate. Shit, next tourney I'm going intermediate and I will stomp the shit out of everyone. (or not...)
This is exactly the sort of thing that I am trying to avoid. Now that I am done with school (finally 8O) I am trying to get back and find where I belong in this sport that I have loved almost half my life. I do not want to waver. Simply find the appropriate position and go from there.

Hey,

Um, perhaps since were both vector images we should like start some kind of alliance. We could be like "Amateur 2.0 freestyle league" or something...

I'm getting all kinds of Cow patterns scrolling up and down this thread...

Moooo!

I was shocked too.
The level of "intermediate" has jumped a lot.
When Ben Roscoe was asking peoples opinions about whether or not he should go open, I was, like, "Of course, you're awesome!" But other people said something like if you can't hit 7 fearless, or something, then you are intermediate. I definitely don't think that intermediate is at that level yet, but that gives you an idea...

I was talking to somebody, maybe at Worlds, saying that in the near future there will probably have to be three different categories -- unless events themselves change -- because when open level gets to the point where players are hitting quad dex moves in competition, the intermediate level gets raised a bar too. Soon there will need to be a level below intermediate, but it will be more like intermediate and open remain as they are and a level is added above open... Or something.

I think you know what I'm getting at.

We were at that point last year at the us open. In circle comp the top guys were hit quad dexes I believe.

No, I don't play soccer. Yes, there are competitions. 4 years. Lots of practice.

Thank you. If I can get my endurance back up running his week (I've had a very disappointing past two days) I will.

I hope to see you at Funtastiks- btw, did you ever hit BAP drill?

An intermediate player is one who lacks tournament experience and guiltless trick selection IMO.

Say for example, a player was guiltless but only hit genuine tricks 2 of every 10, he/she would be (in my eyes) an intermediate player with a solid foundation.
My name: Jeremy Mirken, AKA Chocolatey Shatner, AKA jerk enemy rim.

I agree with jeremy about what constitutes intermediate. I also think that if you can do bops for a solid minute and can't throw much genuine then it's probably time to work on that stuff

I think if you can shred guitless then you are an open level freestyler. There is open and then there is BAP.

Everyone who isn't BAP/BAP-material should just go intermediate from now on. That would be sweet.
