Highlights...

Routine WITH OUT DROPS! (although 1 or 2 bails)

blurry whirl, pheonix and one blurriest bsos...(almost Isilwar)

Far swirl / whirling swirl bsos...

Oh, and I got a nice run, I remember double legovers, pdx drifters, blenders, torques and a FOOTED diving drifter were present...

Sometimes when you play footbag, don't you just feel invincible? It is such a crazy feeling..

Oh, and my Peng bag got it's first hole.. I recall moshers thread about holes, but it is still a slightly sad time, because I had to use my hania for the day...[nothing against hania's, I just love my peng bag...]

*edit* oh yeah, I forgot to answer your actual post. I have been playing for one year, and one month now.

And some other highlights that popped into my head.

-Reverse whirls are working their way into my strings.
-I hit dyno->dyno and blender->blender in one string.

And for Mats, I can easily show you some nice long runs at Worlds :) I am sure we will be playing alot together.

So if any of you have went to the "tripless thread" you have likely seem my highlights, I am just playing so, well, I'll just say it is far beyond what I ever expected.

I decided that after I came home from Germany, that I would no longer take the shy route, if I wanted something I'd go for it. And, I read something by David Clavens, a long time ago, about how you regret not taking some of the chances in Highschool, just because of the way people would see you. Anyway, I finally took the chance with a girl I know, and have known for a while, but was always afraid to. Eventually it has worked out pretty well, and today she just said

"I think my Ex-boyfriend is better for me", except, in about 3 hours of conversation.

So, I was quite pissed off, and I was about ready to destroy my routine, and she calls (4 hours later) and says that it was a bad decision, and that she would rather be with me. So, obviously, I am quite happy that she would like to be with me, but I am feeling pretty torn because I'd rather not have myself as a person who she can just, throw around. So, when I was going to her house tonight, my [best] friend was shredding outside her driveway. I told her that I am still a little weird about the entire fact that one moment, she says I am not right, and the next she is crawling back. So, I told her I'd just shred, because it honestly does clear my mind of any and all problems that are in my life (which, is barely any). So, I start shredding with him, and I hit some crazy stuff.

Scorpions tale->far swirl, bsos.

Ripped warrior->far swirl, bs.

Legbeater->far swirl, bsos.

Smear->atomsmasher->smear->eggplant->atomsmasher->atomsmasher

Spinning ducking butterfly, bsos. [effortless]

Run with blurriest bsos and one blurry whirl.

Mobius, in a string (bs)....

Symp. Whirl, bsos, first try. I also tried whirligig for kicks, and well, EVERYTHING was clean, and then I missed the catch by about nothing. I have never hit ps whirl, but whirligig just 'feels' better.

Gyro dyno, so, spin->bag goes up straight->spin back the same direction witha dyno. I also hit far/pdx dyno with my other side. I footed food and GYBAS today as well. Hell, I even footed flurry bs.

I also hit some massive runs with quantum/pixie/atomic/blenders/everything, and well, I was feeling amazing. So, I almost blew the girl off, because she knew I'd want to shred, but she didn't know I was going to go so crazy; perhaps because she has never seen me shred my hardest. One of our friends from, grade 8 I suppose, came by and then since she was bored, she went with him somewhere. Well, turns out somewhere was a movie, and I don't know what to think. I am not sure if I should be jealous, because I just like her so much I don't want to doubt anything she does. But I do know that today has been an emotional rollercoaster for me, and that when she asked if I wanted to come to the movie, and I was DRENCHED with sweat, it was likely not the best idea.

So, tomorrow I hope it goes well between us.

Either way, something about worlds, and all of my practise has amounted to the best shred I thought I was ever capable of. Every day things just get better and better, and I honestly see myself becoming one of the best in Canada. I just can't wait until I can share that self-confidence with this girl, because that would just be such a great feeling.

I can't wait for Worlds. Seriously, just a few days and I'm in a car with Jorden Moir, going to have the best time of my life. I know it will be unforgettable.

worlds is intense. Everything here is awesome, but for the last few days, even when I am taking it easy my legs hurt.

Basically, I bought a few clavens' bags, and I am loving them....

Jorden is still, by far, my favourite player. however there is also a honourable mention to Johnny Suderman, who is amazing. I never knew he was so damn good.

Ben, Cody and Andrew are my roommates at worlds, and it is fun. They already feel, not quite like family, but comfortable. Possibly it is because I have had to switch families so many times in the last year, that it is so easy to feel comfortable with new people.

Anyway, I'm hitting swirls like mad now, the swirling set style swirls as well. Ripsteins are soon, I guarentee all of you.

I probably wont post as much on modified when I get back, because I plan on drilling like a madman. I am really starting to appreciate as to how dedication and consistency are what make the great players who they are, and I don't think that modified will speed up the process of making me good any quicker.

Oh, and I think my form on half of my tricks has improved 50%...

I also think that I am going to go to the new years jam in a few months, as my next big tournament.

Sessions are going well,

It seems that almost everything has 'clicked' more or less in the last few days of play. There has always been a trick or two, that I will try mid-string but have virtually no confidence in, the culprits are usually DLO, Eggbeater, Quantum-stuff and pdx/toe drifters.

However, within the last few days, my DLO's have gotten considerably better, my eggbeater hasn't missed a beat, my quantum stuff is getting alot better

(nice quantum string I wanted to mention)

Tripwalk -> blizzard -> atomsmasher -> toe blur -> quantum legover -> toe blur.

My drifters, well, I CAN hit them, quite easily, if I force myself through them. My flipside has no pain at all, I can hit pdx / toe / clipper drifters all day long, but for some reason my right drifter can only do clipper drifters without any pain (hip area, just like when I do pdx whirls and fairy's...same hip..) however, yesterday I nailed "right toe drifter -> drifter -> pdx drifter -> drifter -> pdx drifter" and the only source of pain was the last pdx drifter, and it was not as intense as they usually are. I find the only way I can do it pain free on my right side, is if I turn about 90-130 degrees, and personally I think it looks like crap.

On this note, I will probably make a drifter video, so all of you can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

I played for about 5 hours yesterday, broken up into three chunks. I hit some incredible stuff, which makes me very happy...

Pheonix->ripped warrior (pheonix - flipside)
alpine legbeater->blurriest (starts strong side)
Blurriest -> blurriest,
Blurry whirl -> Blurry Whirl (no hand catch :( )
Blurry Torques, bs.
Far Butterfly Swirl, b2b.

And then strings, my god. I can't even really list them, except that quantum one above. I just hit so much crap, and my shuffle is getting so consistant, because I can completely rely on my pixie,stepping,atomic and quantum sets. I remember hitting one nice string with every set, at least once, and some of them more than once. I likely did something like smear->Eggplant->tripwalk->ripwalk->blur->blah blah... And, I tried rubberman for the hell of it, and the first three contacts were SO effortless, and for some reason after the legbeater I did a torque, so I screwed things up there :s

I hit 6 torques b2b as well. wee.

One drill I hit yesterday, bs was "Toe blur->far butterfly swirl -> torque", I liked the way that felt.

My furious set has gotten significantly worse, because I haven't practised it in a while. I am not upset about it, because there are so many better things to worry about. However, yesterday I went for Jani, and the furious set was so high I just said "lets try nemesis".. So, suspense, I got the two blurriest dexes, stuck my clipper out there, and BAM, I missed the bag completely. As I said, I'm not to worried about hitting a ridiculously hard move way out of my league, but it would have been nice ;)

Oh, and my symposium has gotten alot better. I just need flail's, and then I think I've got everything covered. Mirage's are easy as pie now, simple legovers are just, simple, and whirls are getting there. Simple swirls are nice, and I've hit superfly, so I assume that my symposium double downs are good enough as well. Obviously not good enough to rely on, for more than 1/10, but again, those are way out of my league. So, once I've got flails, which I haven't even tried yet, I think I might try more cool stuff.

My next "big trick" goal is bedwetter, and my next goal for drilling is to get my damn hip to do moves pain free. I mean, I can get pdx whirls, and pdx drifters and the like, but I'd love to do them without the next two stringed moves discomforted. And this causes my pdx whirls to be, well, crap because I don't want to practise them too much flipside, so that it is alot better and unequal. Growl.

Well, that should sum up my shred for any of you blog readers out there. School starts soon, and yesterday being registration day, I was playing and people who haven't seen me for a year [because I was in Germany] were astonished at what I was doing. Of course, my t-shirt was drenched with sweat to the point that I wrang it out, that couldn't have helped. However, I don't plan on being known as the "hacky sack kid", I'd rather be known as the "boy who plays hacky sack, and is really good at it". I know the difference in wording isn't strong, but basically where I am headed is that, I'd like to be known as anyone else, and I play a sport. You don't hear the start hockey player be called "hockey kid", rather just some guy that is really good at hockey. [wow, I am canadian....]

My female situation is still in the air, but I'm not stressed in the least about it, and it isn't affecting any other aspect in my life negatively, so I am not worrying about rushing to make this 'complicated' relationship, less complicated and then possibly mess things up.

My job at the hospital is going, er, well. Since I have only worked a few days, I am still very new, but people seem to be pretty stressed out that I don't know how to do everything yet. I mean, understandable, I hate teaching a three year old how to do something, because you have to explain EVERYTHING, and then the kid has to practise. I guess this is where "reality" is then, because in "reality" your co-workers wont be like your parents and cut you slack until you are up-to-par with the others, you're going to have to work for it.

Oh, and my favourite worlds video so far is David's. He really made a strong impression on me at worlds, and just seeing things written like "watching this video means more to me than you know" just makes my respect for him grow that much more. Footbag people are incredible.

-Jay

(edit)

I am hitting torquescrews like butter by the way now. I am not saitsfied with the dyno dex, however, upon video verification it IS there, however, just isn't tight enough at all. I would go so far as to say it is thin. I have hit them mid-string, and all both sides. Yay.

EDIT for the next day's session...

Flail, bsos.
Spinal Tap, bs.
Symp. Torque, bs. -> What an impact those were...
Ducking far refraction, bsos.
stepping ss refraction + 1 blurry refraction, bsos.
GYBAS and Torquescrew, bsos. :D

Oh, and get ready for it..

NO PAIN PARADOX WHIRLS!

And a drill I just made for myself...

Toe drifter -> drifter -> ss leg *rpt, ooh lala..

It is nice, because it isn't like I am lieing to myself about not feeling pain, because it only hurts a little,..There is literally NO pain!

Jesus, another highlight...

Pdx whirl -> ss butterfly*rpt -> drifter -> ss leg-> toe drifter*rpt+more crap.

That is right, two drills I just got today in the same run!

OH MY GOD! Paradox whirling swirl! Jesus! It was flipside! First try ever! GAHHH

Whirling swirl + pdx whirl bsos.

Ok, I had a pretty decent shred today. Went home after school, and after some blood tests and crap for the hospital job I have, and then said "Wow, did all my homework, and I have nothing to do but drill!"

Set up mats, and get the following highlights...

Spinning, but what I think is NOT froggy! I watched Anz's trick video for spinning, and clearly noted the "spinning is easier when you crank your support leg inwards" or whatever, and then I was thinking about my "froggy" spinning, so, I said to myself "Try Anz's tip, and then just, set way quicker than usual". So, my sets are seemingly straighter, and they don't feel the same in the hip area, as when I was doing them the "froggy" style. So, anyway, highlights...

Spinning whirl, bsos.
Spinning butterflies, EXTREMELY controlled, like, "spinning butterfly->ripwalk" no problem at all.
Spinning butterfly swirl, bsos. (last trick was flip,)
Spinning Illusions, a trick I never really confidently had even with Froggy spinning. My Illusions are SO much more downtime and WAY more controlled now. I am almost embarrassed at my old illusions.

And non spinning stuff...

Flail / Symp. Leg / Symp Mirage BSOS/Symp Whirl BSOS. The flails were the big ones here, and then when I got the rest of the tiltless+symps, I said "why not try whirl" and then well, I bsos'ed them as well.

On that note, my flails are much more consistant obviously now. I hit 6/10 Flipside today, and strongside is obviously more. I am really making an effort to dex them at my knee area, which in turn dexes them mid-calf, which is exactly where I want them. Funny, I was doing them by my ankle before, and then read Anz's "set at chest height" and I scoffed, and then tried it, and it worked beautifully. My old flails were around mid-thigh height. My next session I am going to try spinning flail, it just came to mind. I think I could do it, just for fun :)

I got barfly->down double down almost repeated, but I did get it bsos. My barflies, are alot deeper now that I have re-learnt my illusions. That is likely why I hit blurriest swirl the other day ;)

Far Motion, bsos. My flipside one felt really deep and clean, and the strongside one (in this particular bsos) felt a bit whacky, but I trust at least it was "thin" if not there completely.

Stepping ss refraction+ blurry refraction bsos.

And here is the real highlight of the day,

Ducking far swirl, mid string, bs! I made an effort of saying "after at least 10 contacts or so, I will try ducking far swirls" and well, I got them both, mid-string! Hoorah!

Oh, I got mobius -> zoomiing clipper while trying mobius b2b, (I knew I wouldn't get it, I was just playing around...)

Alpine Blurry Whirl. I have been getting pdx whirls, like, as consistant as my barflies recently. So, today I figured "why not try it" and well, I got it. Now I guess that means I'm gonna have to drill tomahawk alot, because I can feel my whirl game is about to explode! On that note, I am getting my whirling swirls more downtime, so I can feel that paradox whirling swirls will be more than once in a dozen for me soon.

My strings are not suffering at all by the way. I can imagine some of you loyal blog readers are probably thinking "but Jay, you hit big tricks for 9 months, then strings, why are you only going for new big stuff again?", but these highlights I think are the outcome of me drilling my strings so much. It seems almost like nothing for me to hit 20 guiltless anytime I like. There are many many 4 adds that I can do anytime I like, torques, pdx whirls, ripwalks, ducking osis'/butterflies, refractions, dynos, etc. Actually, on the dyno/osis/blender note, I got "Dyno -> osis*2 -> dyno -> osis*2 -> blender -> osis*2 -> blender" today, that felt really good.

It seems that since I have such a large vocabulary of "staple" kind of moves, I am being able to hit combo's like "ripwalk->blurry whirl" no problem mid-string, and I am getting more and more cocky to hit big tricks bsos, because it seems like it is working!

I asked my friend yesterday "tell me a hard trick to hit," and he said GYBAS, and I got it both sides (hand catch inbetween) first try. Just stuff like this, I am getting so consistant with my normal moves, that harder ones are just getting so easy now. I can't WAIT until mobius is a normal move for me, because torques are almost just getting boring. Before they used to have an element of "thank god I hit that" to them.

Oh, I hit eggbeater b2b, bsos with very little effort. All the symp and illusion work has made eggbeaters so much fun to play with. I wonder if I should start trying to hit bedwetter again, now that it is probably more at my level, instead of add-hunting.

At school my friend asked me to hit atomsmasher->pheonix, and I got it second try. That felt cool.

FOOTBAG! I imagine there are many many highlights that I am forgetting, oh crap here is one...

Far butterfly swirl -> ripwalk, bsos.

Anyway, I imagine there are a few highlights I am forgetting, but within a week or two, at the pace I am going, they will probably just be regulars in my trick list.

Wow I am a cocky bastard today, I almost feel like re-wording my post because of this, but I figure one of the reasons I write in this blog is so that I can re-read it, and look back on my progress and the like, and mindset is a vital part in your progression...So I am keeping the cocky bits...

Back from Whakahakee, and I took the day off shred.

I didn't hit anything cool or new at whakahakee, actually, I played like crap the entire tournament. I don't think it was my skill or preperation, or even lack of sleep, I think it was because I am used to playing in the comfort of my basement which happens to be room temperature, AND I am the only one shredding, so I am warmed up the entire time. Playing outside in the fridgid cold, and only getting a turn every few minutes is something that I have never done. Jorden did well, right before his turn in circle he was wearing his sweater. Good idea.

I footed Gaunlet in circle competition, wouldn't that have been a cool trick :)

Anyway, whakahakee was awesome. Canadian shredders are awesome. I got to know people like Tom, Matt and Peng alot better, and seeing Ianek not so pre-occupied like at worlds was cool, and MAN is he awesome to shred with. I actually really feel like Ianek is one of the cooler shredders out there, I enjoy talking and shredding with him alot. His trick selection is also outrageous! Ben (roscoe and rea) are also really cool, both of their bags are really good. Ben Rea made more of an impression on me, because I already knew roscoe and I had a bad impression of Rea because of that "Jrstubs and Ben Rea" thread that was made. I never thought he was a dick, but that thread seemed to think so. Rea seems like a cool guy.

One of the better moments of whakahakee..

Me=walking in one direction.
Roscoe= 20 feet away.

Roscoe: Jay, come here!
Me: Ok, (walks over)
Roscoe: Ok, pull up your shirt, and face the sun
Me: Ok :? (pulls up shirt)
Roscoe: (with shirt pulled up) "doesn't the morning sun feel awesome on your belly?"
Jay: (after a bit of warming time) "Holy shit, that is amazing! Thanks for enlightening me. I've gotta go"

Yeah, that is how awesome Roscoe is.

Basically, to sum up how I feel about shred, is that, well, I can only get better from here and that is exactly what I plan on doing.

Shred goals...

-Solidify Quantum.
-Start practising my nuclear.
-Get Motions consistant.
-Swifter.
-Spinning/Gyro.

Basically I still want to be an amazing shredder one day, and I don't think anything is going to stop me, except time.

Jay, I still think you're cool!

This weekend, I really felt like I got to know you better and I feel like I should give you a valuable piece of advice.

Stay positive. No more words like, "I can't." I keep hearing those two words from your mouth. That's the defeatist attitude and it doesn't mix well with footbaggers. Think of all the footbag tricks you once said you can't do that you now can do. It's the same thing with everything in life, so just stay positive and instead of using the words "I can't", use "I'll try."

Just rock what you've got and don't be preoccupied with what other people think. Confidence is the secret to being the guy everyone else wants to be! 8) It's ok to look foolish trying something new or doing something different because no one is good at everything. Don't be afraid to be yourself.

Enjoy that pink wakahakee shirt. All the girls will love it.

See you again soon!! <3
