I find that if your stepping is slurry, it's hard to fix it by doing any minor tweak. For me, I totally abandoned the way I thought of stepping, and taught it to myself a different way from the start. I also think that stepping is overated. Everybody does stepping. I personally like watching people who can play entertaining without using stepping.
In other news: The museum opening demo went great. Luis and I were there for 2 straight hours, and we really entertained the crowds. It was a bit exhausting, but we got some free fruit, juice, and cheese out of it. And $50, which should help us get some bags for the beginners of the club. Speaking of which, we had our first club meeting today. It was really good turnout, and beyond that, a few people seemed real intent on coming back. We even had 2 girls who were proficient hackers. We played a lot of 4square, and we taught some basics too. I feel like the club has some good momentum.
It's friday night now, so I'm gonna stop being lame and get off modified.

I actually hesitated to make this post for 2 reasons, 1 dumb, and 1 legit.
The dumb reason: I had 1221 posts and 43334 views. Double palindromes!
The legit reason: I want to start blogging about worlds, but I'm afraid that if I start, I will have to try and finish it. Anyway, better something than nothing, but don't be surprised if I only make it through like, 3 days.
That said, here we go:

The days leading up to Worlds
Things were pretty hectic and busy right before Worlds. My internship finished up, I had to move my stuff out of the place I was renting for the summer, and I had to figure out how to get my stuff back to school after Worlds. I still managed some time to play footbag, and I was practicing my routine a lot and feeling good about it. I even did my first dropless routine ever (in practice), so my confidence was up.
OK, i'm gonna go back to school work now. This isn't even a bad joke.
Here's a song I like though, so it wasn't a total waste for you to open this post:

How am I stressed already, when the semester is like a week old? Oy. Thankfully I have footbag, and that helps out a ton.
I got in a solo session last night to center myself. I started off going for 100 toe stalls, and I got into a rhythm, so I did 200. At some point I realized that I must have miscounted somewhere, because my odd/even count switched feet. I figured if I did 220 or so, that would guarantee that I did over 200... but using this system I felt I was close enough to 300, so I did 300. Then 320 to guarantee it was over 300, etc. I finished with over 1100 toe stalls. It was very meditative. It was also surprisingly a bit of a physical and mental challenge in a way that I'm not used to footbag challenging me. I kinda liked that about it.
After the toe stalls I got to actually playing. I wasn't going for anything big, so I just tried to link/incorporate basic flipside tricks that I never do into my strings. Highlights:
*bl. whirl-symp whirl bsos. Executed a bit sloppy, but a cool link.
*tomahawk-ducking pdx mirage-legbeater repeat
*a run with pdx tap bsos, both midstring
*blur-tap-magellan bsos
*sidewalk-step mirage-tapdown bsos.
*1100+ toe stalls
Shot some basketball afterwards, and overall just felt better.
Footbag club today at 3. Hope more newbs show up and we can 4square.

Club session today was OK. I was hoping more people would show, but its always tough during the middle of the week. Hopefully we'll get another big turnout on Friday. Today we had a few games of foursquare which were good, and we played a little freestyle. Luis hit rev whirl-pdx mirage, and was close to rev whirl x2. I guess Pascal is lucky he graduated when he did (he hates the way rev whirl looks).
I just messed around for most of the session, but at the very end (2 hours later) I managed a few decent highlights. I applied my new furious technique (I love that I can say phrases like that) to janiwalker, and found that they are more solid now. I developed my new technique with furies, and hadnt really applied it to much else, but it has promise. It pretty much entails thinking of the first dex of furious as a whirl, and not as a symp whirl.
Highlights:
*legbeater-pdx torque-pdlo-legbeater-pdx torque-pdx drop
So close!
*janiwalker-food processor!
*janiwalker-bl. whirl-bl. clipper.
*high stepping butterfly using the new technique.
and the biggest highlight was:
*janiwalker-matador-duck butterfly-fog-phoenix-ducking clipper-pdx torque.
That was my first time hitting any nukes out of jani. Felt cool. I think I may start working on stylish fearless links in the future. Most of my fearless now is either pdx whirl stuff put together, or some variant of fog-pixie duck/dive repeat.

At the start of the semester I tried to capture some old DV tapes of shred sessions from last year, but the computers in the lab were all buggy so I gave up. I decided I'd send the tapes to Rory Dawson in the hopes that he could make a video of me, because I like his editing style. So today I went to the lab just to watch what was on the tapes, and I found out that the capturing deck in the lab works. I think I may make a small, crappy video using some of the less-good footage, shoot one more session's worth of tape, and then send the new stuff and the good old stuff to Rory. So hopefully you can look forward to 2 videos of me in the future, even if only one of them is good.
So frustrated!
Today I planned on filming a session so I'd have more material to send to Rory to make a video. The original plan was to shoot at 4, after Luis' class had finished. But then I heard there was a blood drive that ended at 5. Given that the computer lab opened at 3 (Luis had class from 3-4), it looked like things wouldn't work. But I got lucky, cause I bumped into the computer lab guy, and convinced him to lend me the camera early (around 1:30). So now I'm all pumped because I figure I'll have time to get Luis to film me before his class, and still get to give blood. Instead, due to lunch and me forgetting my shoes at home, I wasn't ready to shoot until 2:30, and Luis couldn't help me at that time. So I got in a solo session and filmed it myself. Filming yourself is a bitch. You hit something good, check the camera, and find out your head is out of the frame, or even worse, you weren't filming. So then you need to try another 10 times to hit the same shit. It's really frustrating.
That said, I got a lot of really good stuff on tape. Unfortunately, it wasn't until later on when I hit the computer lab, that I realized the camera was on "low light" setting, which means any motion came out completely blurry. So the entire tape is completely worthless.
I got in a casual session with Luis later on, and managed some highlights. Fuck it, I'll also tell you the previous session highlights as well, even though I'm gonna try and get them on vid again later.
1st session Highlights:
*a bunch of cool stuff with a basketball, which I'll keep secret until the real video comes out.
2nd session highlights:
*pdx torque-pdx drifter repeat!
*rev whirl-far reverse whirl, repeat
*"blurry" rev. whirl-rev whirl, repeat
Maybe I'll try and get more footage shot over the weekend. But man, what a fucking bad taste in my mouth. I've had so many bad experiences with the cameras and computers in this lab. At least its still nice enough out to play footbag outside.

When is your winter break? There's a chance I may have already left Ithaca by then... I hope not.
So I'm posting in my blog on Saturday night, but it's not as lame as it seems. I got internet access at home now!
On top of that, its been pouring rain for the last few hours, so I don't want to venture out.
Today I decided to re-shoot a session so I can send Rory some good footage for the video he will make of me. I had some annoying turns of bad luck with the weather and the camera, but I still managed to get a lot of really good stuff on film. Big props to Luis for filming me.
I would post highlights, but hopefully you'll just see them when the video comes out. I did manage one highlight off camera, so I'll post that:
*paradon style motion on flip. New trick!
*paradon style motion bsos a few minutes later.
The plan is to get one more shred on tape, then send Rory 2 tapes and let him work his magic. I'm really excited at the prospect of it.

OK, so I'm not being productive with work, so I may as well try to blog my Worlds experience. The first paragraph was from a few posts back, but I figured I would re-post it here so it looks better.
Worlds 2007
Day One
I was busy with non-footbag nonsense even up to the day of my flight. The morning of my flight I was filing change-of-address forms for the new school year, and mailing exit interviews for my summer internship. It wasn't til I got to the airport that I finally felt like I could exhale and focus on Worlds.
In a very pleasant coincidence, Luis happened to be flying out of Newark airport on the same flight that I was, so I had a travel buddy. We were only able to get adjoining seats on one leg of the flight, but it worked out fine because I ended up sleeping on both parts. While we were waiting for our first flight, I told Luis that I was more excited for him than i was for myself, given that it was his first Worlds. Even if it sucked, I knew he would still have fun and it would be memorable, just because your first Worlds always is. This was going to be my sixth time at Worlds.
Our layover was in Memphis, and we had enough time to grab a bite to eat. I got a pork shoulder sandwich, because Memphis is famous for BBQ. I also ordered a beer without knowing how big it was. It was easily over a pint, nearer to two. The combo of ribs and beer knocked me the f* out for the second leg of the flight. I think Chappelle has a sketch about the soporific effects of ribs. He was right.
We got into Orlando airport on time, and met up with Cody Rushing without any problem. I was excited to meet Cody, because I had read his name on forums/tourney results for years, and always thought it was a very cool, RPG-esque name for a shredder. We hacky slacked while waiting for our luggage, which was fun. Ben Benulis was supposed to pick us up, but I don't think he was able to drop off some other players at Terra Verde, so there was like 4 footbaggers picking us up at the airport as opposed to one or two. This made for a very scrunched up car ride, which wouldn't have been so bad, except that we got hopelessly lost and it took us over an hour to get to Terra Verde. D'oh!
In the car ride I told a lot of stories and jokes. You could feel how excited everybody was for worlds. Jay Boychuk rode with us, and he was bursting with excitement for the tourney. He asked me lots of questions about footbag, which I didn't feel like answering, so I just joked around. I think my favorite exchange was:
Jay: "What's your weakest concept?"
Me: "Reality."
I guess the real answer would be "spins," but I much preferred the answer I gave.
They drop me off at Mosher's house at Terra Verde, but all the lights are off. I worry for a moment I have the wrong address, so I call PPD and talk to tom, who confirms they're in the house. He opens the door, we share a big hug, they get me a beer, and I finally sit down. Nothing like knowing you made it safe.
I had gotten a couple of calls from Lon over the course of the lost car-ride telling me to come hang out when I got in, but I was too bushed. I decided to make it a quiet night and not go out. Even so, I ran into a bunch of old friends during the course of the night. I saw Hurricane and Caro, and made a brave attempt to speak to them in French. I saw Sam C, Ashley Danowski, and Stephen Barnes, all who I hadn't seen since CSS7. That seems like forever ago. I saw Clavens and gave him a hug. I felt kinda sad when I felt the brace through his shirt, but I was glad he was at least there.
I hopped in the pool (the houses at Terra Verde were fantastic, easily the best housing I've seen at a tourney) and really thrilled to just doing flips and swimming around. After spending most of the day on airplanes, my body really needed that. There were some boogie boards that Mosher and I submerged underwater and stood on skateboard style. At one point somebody (jeff overbo?) lost control and the board shot out of the pool real fast... and into my face.
I was told that somebody had brought a chainmail hack to worlds, and people were busting all sorts of crazy underwater tricks like qunit ATW, etc. Justin Dale dropped by at some point, and I had a lot of fun talking to him about the NBA, and how the Celtics look for next year.
I got out of the pool in time to meet a big contingent of Team Canada (plus Zeb Jackson) who were dropping by the house. Byrin, Andrew Grant, and Erik Chan. I was really excited to see Andrew again. We hadn't hung out since he came to TSG3 in Tokyo back in 2005. Those were some good times. We caught up a little, and I felt a touch bad for being so talkative because Byrin and Erik were real quiet. It was cool meeting Erik, given how long we've both been in the community. He was taller and skinnier than I expected. I always find that funny, when you meet people in real life and there is something about them that's different than how you imagined.
Eventually I said goodnight to everybody, and slept on the pullout bed.

A few days ago, at the end of the session I messed around a little bit with motion, a trick I never was much interested in. I hit:
For highlights, always assume that "motion" means barfly style, unless I specify otherwise.
New tricks:
*flip motion
*flip dod style motion
*flip loco motion
*pixie paradon style motion
*fusion style motion
*double blender!
Felt goooood!
Highlights:
*paradon style motion-pdx drifter.
*bl. whirl-motion-pdx blender
*other bl. whirl-motion
*fog-dod style motion bsos
*tomahawk-vertigo both sides.
*paradon style motion-pdx torque-motion. I had never hit any of those links before, but got them all together.
*fog-paradon style motion bsos
Given how weak my flip blender is, it was cool to pick up motion and find it relatively equal strength both sides.
I plan on filming one more session before sending tapes to Rory. Maybe I'll implement some motion stuff in it.
Encouraged by this, I decided I'd play around a bit with motions for the entire session. It was a light 2-man session with Luis, without camera, mostly for the purpose of relaxing. We only played one hour, but I ended up with a ton of highlights. It was pretty cool.C-Fan wrote: *paradon style motion on flip. New trick!

Motion is a cool trick.
Wouldn't it be better and easier to just use same and far?
Looking forward to more posts on worlds.
I remember you did that Science Fiction Worlds Journal.. Enjoyed it alot. I think it was 2009 you wrote about? When 2009 and is over will you then do a new? I hope so. I guess time will tell.
Can't wait to meet you in Prague!

Yeah, I'll try and continue the Worlds blog. Time is just hard to come by. I always feel like I should either be doing work, or actually physically playing footbag. Usually the former. I'm glad I have footbag though, cause sometimes I feel like just vegging out with a beer in front of YouTube, but instead I go play footbag.
I'm gonna try and film one more session tomorrow so I can send off tapes to Rory sooner than later.
In other footbag news, I'm pretty much ready to retire my current pair of G-Units. They lasted me a good 9 months all told. The fabric didn't rip off the toe until much later than some of my previous pairs. I think it helped that I pre-emptively reinforced the areas that rip with crazy glue. I also think it helped that I consciously did fewer toe kicks with them. I think the flicking action of a right toe kick is what rips it more than anything. In the last 2 sessions the right toe finally blew out, and the right inside that Waylon replaced did too. I spent a little time tonight stitching both up. Not the best job in the world, but should be good enough to hold em together for one or two more sessions; enough for a good session on tape I hope.

Notably shitty day today. The one light at the end of the tunnel was that at 4:30 I'd be able to play footbag, film the session, and finally be able to send Rory footage.
I take out the camera at 4:30, and the guy asks me if I have a preference for what camera to get. I'm tempted to tell him "one that works" because I've had so many bad experiences with their equipment, but instead I say whichever, because I know it's not the dude's fault.
I ask Luis to film me, and feel bad because I feel like I'm taking time out of his day. I leave the camera with him, and go home to get my shred gear. I run home, cause I don't want Luis to have to wait too long. I get home, but where are my keys? I search all over, until I remember another shitty part of my day (none of the printers on campus were working, so I had to dash to my dept to print out a paper, and in the process I left my flashdrive and keys there). I call Luis telling him I have to go back on campus (at least 20 minutes) to get my keys, go back home to get my stuff (15-20), and then go to the gym (10 minutes) to meet him. I tell him he's free to leave if he wants.
I actually make good time getting to my dept and back home. Once I'm home, I triple check to make sure I have everything I need. No fucking way am I going through all this trouble to forget something. Socks, shorts, jersey, bag, waterbottle, and tapes to film with. Check. I haul ass to the gym and meet with Luis. I warm up with him, and once I'm ready to film, I check the camera. And it doesn't. Fucking. Work.
There's no emoticon on modified that can express how incredibly this killed me. I was having a bad day before, but to go through so much trouble to film, only to find that my school rents out defective cameras... it was almost too much to bear.
I ended up playing anyway, but I had trouble releasing my anger. The reason I'm sending tapes to Rory in the first place, is because I have had so many problems with my school's media lab and cameras. For this video so far I've had camera problems twice, and the one time I was able to film, they gave me a camera with dead batteries that I had to charge. What a fucking joke.
I ended up playing alright, but I would prefer to show you highlights than just tell you. Since I can't, here they are:
*ps whirl-blur both sides.
*double blender a couple times. I think the 2nd dex is thin, but I need to see it on camera to make sure.
*flip loco again.
*atomotion again, first try.
*torque-pdx drift-pdx torque-pdx drift. I have faith that my flip torque is OK, whereas my flip pdx torque usually isn't (funky mirage dex is sideways).
*a few of my best phasing sets ever. Still have yet to hit anything out of them.
*my best looks ever at nemesis. It will be "the," but still would be a thrill.
I'm gonna give the media lab one more chance. If I can't film the next session, then I'm just gonna send Rory what I have, and hope for a decent but real short video.
Oh yeah, and school sucks

Excellent turnout at footbag club again. I'm really pleased with how its going this year. We have a good mix of races, skill levels, and even gender (2 girls regularly show, and one more occasionally does). I felt a bit sick this morning, so I mostly just played foursquare, which was fun.
I freestyled a little bit at the end, and managed to hit 2 new tricks:
*ducking far dyno. Weird timing.
*diving dyno.
Good times.
