Some crazy Shred rules there, 45 secs and cant repeat the same move more than 5 times?
sigh... Those were THE original shred contest rules. Before about 2001, shred was always 45 seconds. Furthermore, it wasn't until the late 90's, like, 1997, I think, that the Shred Contest rules were improved to account for variety (proposed, perhaps, by "Ironman" Eric Wulff...?). Prior to that, the rules that you see on the Funtastiks Summer Classic tournament page were just about the original version of shred contest rules, and the Funtastik Summer Classic tournament was one of the very first places were the Shred Contest was held... At least, one of the very first where it was held regularly, year after year, even up to this very day (well, this very past weekend, anyway), along with a few other fun and entertaining unique events that are found only at Funtastiks (like the "Ironman", "Superman", and the "Service Poaching" contests, which, collectively, are known as the "Skills Contests" in Funtastiks lingo.)
Anyway, we don't actually use those rules. Brenda and Joe Solonoski basically just schedule the event and let the shredders worry about the rules. We've been using whatever rules are standard for many years now ("whatever rules are standard", meaning: in 1998 ADDs, uniques, and difficulty were counted the same as they are now, but it was still 45 seconds. In the early 2000's, ADDs, uniques, and difficulty were counted the same as they are now, but we were doing 30 seconds, just like everywhere else). Brenda and Joe Solonoski, bless their hearts, just keep copying and pasting the same info into each new version of their event listing every year.
After having been to a couple of Funtastiks Summer Classics, I figured that everybody was hip to this little idiosyncracy, but then one year Daryl Genz was there (in like, '02 or '03) and he went out and hit this string of all these repeating tricks, like Sidewalk > Sidewalk > Sidewalk > Sidewalk > Ripwalk > Ripwalk > Ripwalk > Sidewalk > Sidewalk > Sidewalk > Sidewalk, etc., and right afterwards I asked him "So, D, what was up with that strange shred strategy of yours?" and it was revealed to me that he was not, actually, appraised of the situation, the situation that the rules as posted on the web-site were not really applicable anymore, and that we'd been doing the "standard" ADDs plus Uniques X Difficulty every year for a while already. Nobody told him, and he hadn't asked anybody. And prior to the event he had been seriously skooling to compete in that old-school shred contest format that hadn't been used in at least half a decade. Fortunately, if I recall, the cuts were not very deep, and he made it to the next round anyway and got to try again, and shred normally, I think; can't really remember any more. I thought it was pretty funny, though, at that time, and even now.
