Kicked last night. Hoping to get some skills back in preparation for shredding at Temple next month. Was OK for not having kicked much lately.

Found out our baby is gonna be a little girl :-)

Also have determined that moving (AGAIN) is more cost effective than putting on an addition. Sigh.. I like my house. I hate moving. It is what it is.

Wow, haven't posted in a long time. Haven't played in a long time either. Here's the update:

Ankle and neck were getting more and more sore. Ankle was cracking and popping due to injury at Montreal Worlds a few years ago. Basically, I sprained it while playing, laced up tighter, took some advil, and kept playing on it that way until about February of this year. Finally, I went to the doctor and he suggested physical therapy. Neck was injured while I was building my porch. Repetitive hammer motion caused me to knot up a muscle in my neck and it's never released fully since then. Anyways, physical therapy for one appointment was worth it - I learned the needed stretches and exercises. I cancelled the remaining appointments for now because I'm friggin busy and because I don't need to pay a $40 co-pay to do these exercises. We'll see how I progress.

In the meantime, we've been in the process of selling our house (yes, we're moving again). Found a buyer, reached an agreement. Found a house to purchase, reached an agreement. Things were going smoothly. Then, the buyers had financing trouble, and now we're in a legal battle with them and will very likely lose the sale, and the purchase of the next place. Which is a serious problem because....

Our baby daughter is due in about 3-4 weeks. We planned to be in the new house about a week or two after the baby was born. We LOVE the house we picked out. Now it's either not going to happen, or won't happen on a good time table. Very frustrating. But looking forward to meeting my daughter drowns out our negative feelings on the whole house thing. Things will work out eventually.

Hmm... what else? Oh yeah.. I've been tired 100% of the time for about 5 years now. Finally had a sleep study performed. Turns out I have sleep apnea which basically amounts to you not getting enough oxygen while you sleep. Your heart also works overtime while you sleep in an attempt to get oxygen to all your organs. In any case, I did a second study with a breathing mask designed to make these problems go away. When I woke up from the study, I felt like superman. Really, I haven't felt that good in 10 years. So, this weekend I have my final consultation to get set up on the new sleeping regimin. It's sort of odd to have this mask on, but given the benefits, I'm not too proud to give it the old college try.

All that to say this... If I can get into a stable place (house), get my energy back (better sleep), and regain comfort in my neck and ankle (stretches, exercises), I'll be interested to see if footbag is again of any interest. I was so bored with it, and too tired/hurting to try to get unbored. We'll see.

Congratulations on the impending new Riefer. I'm sorry to hear about all the stress in your life; when my parents retired and moved to Arizona, they also had lots of headaches of potential buyers backing out last second.

The sleep apnea thing is scary. I'm happy to hear you are getting some kind of treatment for it. I hope you get back into footbag.

Well, looks like my sleep issues aren't quite bad enough to be classified "apnea" and the mask didn't work well for me. So I'm just going to have to be tired I think. Hopefully as we get into a good groove/schedule, I'll exercise more and that will help my energy.

Also haven't progressed on ankle or neck because.......

We're happy to announce that we have a new addition to our household! Our little girl Emily Anne Riefer was delivered at Pottstown Hospital on 07/08/07 at 6:41 p.m. She weighed 8 pounds 11 ounces and measured 20 1/2 inches in length.

Interesting highlights: 2nd baby sooooo much easier than first, baby was born within minutes of my godson, Emily has light hair like Keegan's and has a dimple on her cheek.

Both Mommy, Daddy and Emily are doing great. The only trick now is to explain to Keegan that he's not the only star of the show!

OK, So in the "General" section I'm seeking advice on what I need to do to "start over" with footbag. Goal is that I need exercise, and I'm still interested in footbag. But, I want to build my game correctly this time. The limitations that I had because of certain holes in my game were making the game unenjoyable.

Here's my plan (I may change it based on feedback in the other thread):

Sessions 1, 2, 3, 4 (first 2 weeks)
  • - Weigh in. Record weight. Don't look at it again until end of 2nd month.
    - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
    - 100 kicks alternating between toe/inside/outside
    - slow alternating toe stalls. 20 on each side
    - fast alternating toe stalls. 20 on each side
    - same side clipper drill, frozen clippers, alternating clipper drill. goal is 30 contacts
    - same side butterfly drill, frozen butterflies, infinity drill. goal is 20 contacts
    - ATW's, both directions. focus on straight high sets. 10 hits both sides.
    - mirages/illusions.. work on best form and straight sets. 10 hits both sides.
    - pickups.. work on best form. Set from toe and from clipper. 10 hits both sides.
    - pdx mirages (set from butterfly every time). work on best form.. straight sets. 10 hits strong side, 20 hits weakside.
    - 5 nice runs (at least 20 contacts) including all moves practiced above.
    - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
Sessions 5, 6, 7, 8 (2nd half of first month back)
  • - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
    - all items from sessions 1 thru 4, but in abbreviated fashion. get through all drills in 10-15 minutes
    - ducking clipper. set from butterfly and set from toe. 10 hits both sides.
    - ducking alternating clippers. 10 in a row starting from a butterfly.
    - diving clipper. set from a butterfly. 10 hits both sides.
    - consecutive diving clippers. 5 in a row starting from a buttefly.
    - diving clipper to ducking clipper. set from buttefly. 5 hits both sides.
    - ducking clipper to diving clipper. set from buttefly. 5 hits both sides.
    - spinning clipper. set from butterfly and sealed to infinity. 10 hits both sides.
    - 5 nice runs (at least 20 contacts) including all moves practiced above.
    - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
Sessions 9, 10, 11, 12 (first two weeks of 2nd month back)
  • - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
    - all items from sessions 1 thru 8, but in abbreviated fashion. get through all drills in 20 minutes
    - all ducking/diving/spinning drills, but end in butterfly catch instead of clipper. 5 hits each boths sides.
    - pixie set, toe catch. setup for pixie set from pdx mirage. 30 on both sides.
    - stepping set, toe catch. set from butterfly. focus on high knees, straight set. 20 on both sides.
    - atomic set, toe catch. setup for set from pdx mirage. focus on keeping the bag close and straight. high knees. don't let dex leg flail out. 20 on both sides.
    - 5 nice runs (at least 20 contacts) including all moves practiced above. Yes, the sets will be considered moves for now. Don't get itchy for ripwalks etc. yet!!
    - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
Sessions 13, 14, 15, 16 (last 2 weeks of 2nd month back)
  • - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
    - all items from sessions 1 thru 12, but in abbreviated fashion. get through all drills in 30 minutes
    - Whirl. set from buttefly, seal guiltless. 10 hits both sides.
    - DLO. set from buttefly, seal guiltless. 10 hits both sides.
    - smear. straight set, nice and slow. setup with pdx mirage, seal guiltless. 5 hits strong side, 10 on weak
    - pixie butterfly. setup with pdx mirage, seal with pdx mirage. 10 hits both sides.
    - stepping butterfly. setup with butterfly, seal with infinity or ss butterfly. seal at least half of hits with some other stepping trick (or same trick). 10 hits both sides.
    - ripwalk. setup with butterfly, seal with anything guiltless. seal at least half of hits with some other stepping trick (or same trick). 10 hits both sides.
    - blur. setup with butterfly, seal with anything guiltless. 10 hits both sides.
Atomic pdx mirage. setup with pdx mirage, seal with anything guiltless. 5 hits both sides.
    - Atomic butterfly. setup with pdx mirage, seal with anything guiltless. 5 hits both sides.
    - 5 nice runs (at least 20 contacts) including all moves practiced above.
    - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
    - When you get home from session 16, Weigh in. Compare weight to original number. HOW DO YOU FEEL???
After month 2
  • - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises
    - Nice warm ups and brush up as needed on components that feel sloppy or cumbersome
    - each session, pick ONE "within reach" new/never-solid/trick-that-faded component/trick to work on for 10-15 minutes BOTH SIDES. e.g. Paradon, torque, drifter, in-spinning, gyro, barrage, swirl, dyno, blender, eggbeater, spinning pdx mirage, spinning ducking ___,
    - Shred and practicing harder links
    - Once tired, pick a couple "currently out of reach" tricks/once-in-a-blue-moon tricks to work on for 5 minutes BOTH SIDES. e.g. Flurry, pixie paradon, pdx whirl, blurry DLO, gryo DLO, pdx drifter, diving DLO, barfly
    - 2 nice long runs to cool down. worry about string length, not shred-worthiness
    - stretching, including ankle and neck exercises

Glad to hear you are getting back into it Bob! Congrats on the new baby!

I think your training list is great. I remember your shred was awesome before, so I am sure you will pick it up easily again. I am just getting back into it again too and I am trying to do the same thing by repairing holes I had. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

This is very exciting. The only advice I can give about starting over is, if there is a concept you used to do badly before, don't try and tweak how you do it: re-learn it entirely. I was only able to fix my stepping when I looked at it as a concept I was learning for the first time, that was completely different than how I used to do it.

Good luck, and I hope to shred with you at some point this year.

Well, I haven't started my plan yet, but I'm excited to do so. Since we decided not to move out of our house (instead, we'll rennovate) we have contractors in our place building walls, installing central air/heating, putting in new carpet... plus, I've been refinishing our kitchen cabinets. In other words, super busy. But all my projects are coming to a close and I'll have a little bit of free time again. A little scared for the "weigh in" portion of my plan. I think I averaged a beer per cabinet door during the kitchen project. Urgh.

Bob! Hell yeah I'll be around the Burgh over x-mas time...unless of course I go to Ethiopia to visit my sister....but that's kind of unlikely right now.. Either way, let's keep in touch and make it happen if we're both around. It would be awesome to shred and catch up.

Just re-read my "how to run an event" document for the first time in years. Wow, I gotta say... Nice work Riefer. That document kicks ass. I wouldn't change a thing about it really.

Anyhow, all my house projects are nearly done so footbag plan can start by end of September I think. I can't wait.

Watched that Felix Z. vid.. The footbag and the beatbox one too. Boy, he's pretty damn talented ain't he?

Well, I can barely feel my finger tips. They're tingly. It's because of the work I've done for the last month, and specifically this weekend. Each night after work last week (and I was sick last week too) I put in a few hours finishing the house jobs.

Then on Saturday, I laid railroad ties around the swingset for Keegan and Emily. Laying railroad ties sucks really really really bad if you've never done it. They're heavy, cutting rebar is hard work, pounding in rebar with a 4 lb sledge is tiring on the shoulders and hands (tingly fingers). After the ties were in, I had to back fill the soil in the gap behind the ties. In one corner, the wall was 4 ties high, so it took a decent amount of soil. I picked up 1 cubic yard of screened topsoil in my truck and backed right up to the playground. From there, I huffed the soil to the needed spots with shovel/wheel barrow. After all this, I decided I had enough energy to build a bench to sit on while watching the kids play. So I got two hug log sections from neighbor, and cut my lone remaining railroad tie to make the seat. A few rebar stakes and the job was done. Turned out great actually. So the playground project from hell is done and it looks amazing.

Saturday night after spending some time with the kids/wife, I spackled the few spots inside that needed it and then flopped on the couch.

Sunday morning, up bright and early again. Wife made waffles and vegetarian sausage for breakfast which was much needed. When I'm working like I have been lately, my appetite is vicious especially in the morning. The bush that I ripped out so that the central AC units could sit in that spot was first on my list. I broke the bush down and transported to my kindling pile next to firepit area. That was hot sweaty work but didn't take too long. Next, I went about trying to break up tile in front of indoor fireplace in living room in preparation for carpet guy that is at my house as I type now. Tile break up didn't go well at all. I don't know what the previous owner used, but it's not breakable without a jack hammer. So I modified plan and installed plywood subfloor over existing tile, and then put down pergo on top of that. As luck would have it, the pergo I picked matches EXACTLY to all the trim/stain in our house. Looks nice and will catch hot coles nicely. After that, I finished emptying the living room of all furniture so carpet could go down. Then I installed the new blinds for the living room. Cutting them sucked, but I got'r done. Again, as luck would have it, the wood blinds match EXACTLY to our trim/stain. With the carpet in, the room will look like a new room. On my way upstairs, I installed a few blank outlet covers over the old thermostat boxes. Finally flopped into bed (wife/kids are at mother in law's until carpet is finished tonight) at 11 pm >> a 14 hour work day for me.

I go on vacation to sister in law's beach house on wednesday night through the weekend. I need the vacation. Bad. My body hurts in so many ways, and my mind has been stressed to the max. The only house work I'm doing until I leave is to put the living room furniture back in place tonight since the carpet will be in.

All that to say this... Monday (a week from now) I can start working out (weight lifting) and attempting to find time to play footbag and basketball again. All the remaining projects that I have on the house are non-critical and can be worked on an hour here, an hour there. I am going to put my weight bench and situp board in the basement (new heating/cooling system keeps it comfortable down there.. still a musty basement, but not bad for my purposes). Going to try my footbag plan and really try to follow what I outlined. Will post here with my progress.

Not looking forward to the "weigh in" portion of my plan.

Hey awesome to hear you're getting back into it.
Philly shred sometime? We've been accumulating players. Last year it was myself, my friend drew, Hobbes, Tom Stepek, Chris Balch, Jon Schneider, Weylon Lew on Occasion, and Chris Miller <--who is now in Cali. But we also have 2 more kids on campus who play and a kid from Delaware who is willing to drive up rather often. So maybe you'll grace us with your presence 1 time hmm?

heh heh heh... I definitely plan to show up to shred with you guys (and at other events) in the future. It all depends on how my plan unfolds. It's only fun for me if I'm pretty good, so we'll see if I can get weight down and get skills back to better than before. Thanks for asking :-) Makes me feel good that there are players out there that still want to hang!

Speaking of which, Cornell Footbag Jam 2 is on October 27th and 28th in Ithaca, New York. There's even a basketball gym in the room next to where our event is happening. You know you want to...
