Fun weekend. Thursday night I was up til 4 am writing a paper, so I was a bit tired for footbag club on Friday, but I went and it was fun. At first there were only a handful of people, and I was worried that the ominous rainclouds (or prelims, which can be even more ominous) scared off the freshmen. Thankfully though, people trickled in and we ended up with around 10 people. I'm real happy with how the club is going, but I think we should maybe dedicate more time to teaching people to freestyle. 4square is fun and builds community, but there are limits to how much people can progress with that.
I didn't play much on Friday partially due to being tired, but mostly because I wanted to save my legs for a session in NYC on Saturday. I put on my g-units, but played in baggy cargo shorts in a successful attempt to limit how hard I could play. All told, I probably freestyled for less than 10 minutes, and didn't do anything too hard. The one highlight was hitting a double spinning clipper midrun, which was totally unexpected and cool.
I got to the city Friday night and just hung out with Bruce and his cat. The weather on Saturday was perfect. Low 70s, no humidity, no wind... just perfect. I wish I had had time to mod my new pair of g-units before going to the city, but I didn't, so I had one final session in the old pair. They are really falling apart. Still, I was able to play normally if I ignored them. A few times the bag would stick in my clipper or toe because of the rips, but overall it was no big deal.
Got to Washington Square Park at 2 pm, thrilling to the weather. Huuuuuge turnout. Hadn't seen a NYFA session this big since Willie Digges came to town over the summer. We had something like 11-12 people, and 3 circles for most of the session. Bruce Dole, Stan Sagalovskiy, Jon Schneider (!), Matt Isanuk, Dave Susillo, Drew Martin, Waylon, Barrett, Brian D'Amato, Pascal, and a couple others. I was real excited to see so many people freestyling in NYC.
We started off playing by the fountain, which was really slippery. I was OK with it as long as I stuck to shuffle and didn't spin, but I didn't like feeling limited. My only goal for the day was to hit some double spins, so this surface really messed with me. It didn't help that the soles of my G6s are so worn down. I ended up getting really bitchy and complainy, which made me feel bad because I knew I was annoying everybody else. Thankfully, Dave Susillo suggested we just move to our old spot (on asphalt), and we did. As soon as we changed surfaces, everybody played better. It was like night and day. I'm glad the "bad" part of the session was less than 30 minutes, and the rest of the day was super fun.
I was really happy to see Jon at the park. I didn't get to play with him at all at Worlds, and I think we only played like twice all summer despite living near each other. I love watching Jon play, because it inspires me on a few levels. His game is really unique and very controlled. Every trick just sits real well, and he does a ton of stuff that nobody else does. I feel like those are two areas of my game that could use improvement. I play hard, but too many of my tricks are common ones, and my control could definitely be improved. Watching Jon do stuff like flapper kick x3 to spinning flapper kick to gyro flapper kick to flapper kick x2 to ducking kick just blows my mind. Who else could even do that? The other thing that inspires me, is that Jon was able to change/tone down his game in order to continue playing as he gets older. I feel like this is something I should do sooner than later, because my current playing style will be difficult for my body to maintain as I get older.
I was also stoked to play with Matt Isanuk. I met him something like 5 years ago when I was still an undergrad at Brown, and he was a junior in high school checking out colleges. He came to Brown and we got in a session, and I told him what I thought of the school. I don’t think I saw him since. Apparently, he’s spent the time in between getting really really good at footbag. I was very impressed with his game. Everything was very good form. His style kind of reminds me of a mix between Noah Jay-Bonn and Milan Benda. I saw him hit some clean surging sets, real effortless spinning ducking stuff, and a variety of sets and alpine tricks no problem. Spinning PDLO bsos was tight. The coolest thing I saw though, was gyro rev egg. So like GDLO but with the last dex reversed.
On a personal level I felt like I played well. We had lots of good crowds throughout the day (I played for 4+ hours), and I enjoyed doing long strings for them. I don’t remember too much in the way of individual highlights, except that I hit double spinning clipper midstring on 2 occasions. I was really stoked about that. Once was in the middle of a string that began with bl. whirl-flurry. I also hit a good variety of hard tricks throughout the day, including some ones I hadn’t done in a while: mofly, barroque, ducking pdx egg, spinning pdlo, ducking pdx torque, HPD, spinning pdx egg, blah blah blah. Motions were also feeling good both sides, and it was nice to have them consistent to show off, given how recently I picked them up. More than anything though, I was just ecstatic to be playing footbag with friends in perfect weather at the end of September. I knew it was a treat, and I savored it.
Oh, I also got in some Wii bowling and set a new personal record: 234!
