Yesterday's highlights.

Well, basically I said to myself "I suck at 'freestyle', I need to be able to hit more weird combinations, instead of falling into the same habits".

With that, I tried to link every single concept I knew together, and did it successfully. So, every pixie+tiltless/guiltless and every atomic+tiltless/guiltless and every quantum+tiltless/guiltless and every stepping+tiltless/guiltless trick, to another p/a/q/s (s=stepping, etc) link I could, and then bsos it. I also then tried some of my easier 5's, and some of my harder 5's in a bsos fashion like that.

Some highlights that I remember.

Torque->drifter*rpt
swirl->ripwalk*rpt
Whirling swirl->blender bsos.
Blurriest->ducking butterfly bsos.
smear->tripwalk->dyno->ripwalk BSOS (capital letters for a reason)
Blender->duckingbutterfly->dyno->ducking butterfly bsos.
Barfly->ripwalk bsos.
Barfly->blurriest bsos.
Blurriest->barfly bsos.
Pdx whirl->barfly->ripwalk->dyno(and blender, different run) bsos.
smear->atomsmasher->toe blur bsos.
Atomsmasher b2b*4
pdx drifter->sidewalk bsos (really difficult. I jumped for joy)
Legbeater->sidewalk->blender/dyno bsos.

I'm sure there are many more. I did that for about 3 hours. Just imagine any trick I can do, and I tried to link it.

Oh yeah, I hit my first ripstein mid string!

Sweet highlights man.

Try Drifter>Blurry Drifter both sides, and if you're feeling crazy, repeat it.

Why are Alpine sets so easy for you?

You'd better be going to Cornell!

Why are alpine sets so easy for you?
Well, I am not entirely sure. I just look at the set, and say "My legs would have to move THIS much faster to get it over my head" and then well, it works...

I am planning on going to Cornell, I have asked my footbagging friends and they say they'd like to go, but the issue is trying to get their parents to let them use a car for the drive down. If that doesn't work, I'll try just about every other possibility of going down (aka, begging mosher to let me have 5'9"s and 130 pounds of trunkspace). I am not too keen on taking a bus or something, because it would likely be really expensive. I really want to go though!

Just to piss you off, I also got swirling ducking today, both sides, but it is the really really slurry swirling ducking. So, imagine a pixie without toe walls slurred horribly, except with a swirl. I was just fooling around, but next session I'm going to try for swirling ducking far swirl.

Since I am already posting in this blog, I might as well say I got my first flipside ripstein mid-string today as well. I started playing RIGHT after dinner, but for some reason that stomach-cramping feeling was in my body for the entire 2 hour session, it just, well, didn't leave.

I also worked alot on my drifters, and got that pdx drifter->drifter rpt* drill, and Matt's above challenge of drifter->blurry drifter. There is no way in hell I'll be able to repeat that, seeing as the blurry drifter was rather lucky flipside. I was watching some evan gatesman footage, (just spelt footbag instead of footage...Damn, just about did it again) and I noticed how he crumpled his knees over the bag for drifter/mirages, and decided I'd try. While I am not flexible enough to melt over the bag like he does, I think that my form of drifters improved significantly, and now pdx drifter's don't feel quite as cramped. I am pivoting alot more for pdx drifters instead of twisting on the spot, which I think will allow me to have a much more consistant pdx drifter, because then I'll just be able to set the bag just about anywhere, and as long as it is around the same height I'll be able to dex it. Where as before, unless I set the bag perfectly straight and to the exact best height, I couldn't get the stall afterwards without serious cushion.
Thanks evan gatesman for your cool style.

Now, for my 'shred goals' that I posted after whakahakee..

-Solidify Quantum.

Well, today I just worked on blizzard->tripwalk->ripwalk*rpt. I got it once or twice, and I also did tap->toe blur->tap->toe blur once. It was ugly. I know (well, I'd like to think I know) that my quantum dex is just fine, my problem with inconsistancy is my set, because with the amount of 'pop' in a quantum set, my toe set wants to 'pop' just as much. But I've been working to get it down alot, and I'm finally being able to use quantum almost with confidence.

-Start practising my nuclear.

Today, nuclear came extremely easily to me. I didn't expect it not to, but the fact that it came SO easily was quite nice. It was at the very very end of the session, cramp and all, and I remembered it. My first nuclear was flip, and I naturally hit matador no problem out of it. It was also in the middle of a string (bops). So then I tried it a few more times flip, and it didn't do what I wanted. So, then I looked at why it worked the first time, and I did some more, and bam I did a sumo (first time ever, strong or flip) that almost hit my chin. So, then I decided I'd bsos sumo, and I did it. Then I said "screw it, lets do some add hunting today". So, well, I ducked away and got alpine matador both sides. I think I might try and get my nuclear in strings more often, it feels so cool!

-Get Motions consistant.

This was one of my first objectives of the session, and for some reason I found that my "double dexes" weren't working, so I just went and toyed with barrages/double downs for around 45 minutes (mid string, and consecutives). I couldn't hit barfly for the life of me, so I tried some blurriests (I find them easier to do the double dex) and I got them easily, and then barflys clicked, and then I bsos'ed toe barrage, barrage, and barfly in the same run. Then I thought of a new thing to do, and I almost got magellan, with an extra dex on the legover. Whatever that is called. I footed it both sides. So, then I tried straight out double atw's out->in, and I decided I should do a few thousand of those before I bother with the ultimate magellan things.

To sum it up, I completely forgot about motions after that. Damnit.

-Swifter.

I need someone to show me this move, because the only way I came close to hitting it was by turning more than 180 degrees, and dear Jim Penske certainly doesn't turn that much for them. Damn I love his swirls that are tucked in after a pixie or blurry set.

-Spinning/Gyro.
I practised drifter->spinning, and it feels really cool. I think my drifter->spinning is better than my butterfly->spinning, for the 'froggy'ness....

On another note, I was trying merlin from clipper, so, like a near mirage and it felt pretty cool. I tried some flails, and they were WAY easier than I remembered...

Goal for next session-> drifter->matador*rpt

I think it is slightly rediculous, but after seeing how easy nuclear was today maybe it isn't that farfetched. But I think I am getting ahead of myself, because drifter is such an odd center or gravity. Meh, I'll find out.

Oh, and another random highlight, I got swirl->hand catch->swirl*17 flipside. I also got swirling rake bsos. Swirling rake feels really cool. And I am hitting monsters here or there, but they are far less "monster'' like than Jorden's. Mine are more like an osis versus Jorden's fridged osis style monsters. I think fridged osis is the correct term? Meh.

Foot-bag! (said in Roscoe's voice, at the end of his song)

Locomotion, bs.
Spanishfly, bs.
Nemesis, bs.
Genesis, flipside.
Blurry Barrage, strong side (footed flip countless times)
Pdx merlin, bs.

I also got two runs over 50 contacts. One of them was drifter based (toe, pdx, clipper, one blurry) and one of them was whirl based (rev whirl, whirl, pdx whirl, blurry whirls). I got another run earlier in the day that I literally just had to hand catch, because I was so exhausted from such a long string. I also got a string starting with matador, and later bsos'ed it, and then later got another sumo out of ripwalk. Booyah.

Needless to say, today was a good day all around.
_
Quoted from the New Moves thread.

Seriously, today was the best day ever for shred. Nemesis, BOTH SIDES!! FUCK! Gresham was over and asked me to hit spanishfly and nemesis, and I footed both of them for him, both sides about 20 times throughout the session. Then at the end, I said "I've gotta hit these" and then I tried nemesis 5 times each side, and I footed strong side 4 times in a row, and footed flip 2 out of 5 times. Then when they left, I practised some nuclear stuff again, and then said "I need to hit nemesis," and then the third try strong, and a bunch of tries for flipside.

I can't wait to show someone at Cornell this cool stuff. Specifically Matt K, because for whatever reason at worlds we seemed to connect pretty good on shred.

I hit blurry barrage, first try ever. It was nice. Gresham witnessed that.

I am tentative on the merlins, because they are so difficult to see if they are thin or super clean. I try and throw my symp mirage as far under and over the first mirage as possible, thus rendering it impossible to 'the' but I need to video myself a few times to see what to improve.

Locomotion, both sides felt the best out of all of them. I LOVE the way motions feel.

I can't wait to have an awesome nuclear set. Rubberman II will feel oh-so-good.

I can tell my next shred session will be not so, epic, because I'm going to not try insane tricks I should not be hitting. I am not feeling "guilty" about these tricks though, because some of my runs today were so rediculously long I just couldn't shred anymore. Jorden explained to me the tiers of contacts, and how after XX contacts you catch a second wind, and then XX+X contacts you catch a third and the like, but I haven't found my own personal ones yet. It just feels SOOOO good to say "Ok, I'll bsos eggbeater" and then "Ok, now I'll go for barfly" and then "Ok, now pdx drifter" and then "ok, tripwalk" and then say "holy shit, I'm still doing the same run?" and then say "ok, swirl->ripwalk bsos" and then get it.

Dear Jesus am I glad I found footbag.

-Jay

(edit)

Gresham also asked me to hit Sunilwalk, and I got it both sides, first try flip and third try strong oddly enough. I am going to learn them better....

Janis: I know he's hit blurriest swirl before, but don't know if it's his first 4 dex.

If you want better quality, I can do the video in a different format and make it 100 times bigger and then I'll wait for the huge upload time. For now, I want to get to bed so I just threw it in the worst quality I could.

Now, if any of you want me to do something cleaner, then just tell me. I really wanted to get this video done today (since, well, in the 'new moves' thread they seemed to want a video really badly). So I was willing to be satisfied with really crappy nemesii. But, if any of you for whatever reason want me to hit really nice deep clean ones, give me a week and I'll put something up.

(edit) and to Isilwar, I do have a 'nack' for getting moves usually the first few tries as long as my mind gets around it, but I give special respect to Jorden's Sessions DVD, which has a section dedicated to the delusional set.

Seriously, if in doubt buy the dvd from jorden, gravity session is sooo sick.

*edit again?*

And to Mr.Crowley, thank you for the kind words :) I really enjoyed watching you and your black Gunits playing at worlds, and then you bought those quantums and learned swirls that very second. Either way, hopefully we'll meet up at another Jam sometime :D

Sick!

Tapping Tap bs looked solid.
Both of the nemeses were the (the set was great though), but the second one wasn't half bad. It seems like you understand all of the motions in footbag, and then your brain just takes a few minutes to comprehend it and then you have it down. Cool stuff.

wanna hear some news from germany? clemens plays sometimes, simon has gotten really solid and can play more or less guiltless. i had dan ednie in my house for a night. he visited frankfurt after worlds and came to play with us. he's a nice guy and taught me to do my toe stalls the right way 8) i did my first flipside pdx whirl yesterday, but still don't get around the bag for the normal flip whirl. got ripwalk *6!!! still no rubberman.
hope to see you again sometime

Sporatical_Distractions wrote:Where's your challenge page foo'!
delusional ss barrage a possibility?
I have so many challenges for myself yet to do, that I don't really want a challenge page. I am sort of in the situation where, if someone gives me a challenge I'll try and try and try to hit it so much that I get frustrated, and don't end a session on a good note. Having nice personal challenges keeps my basement friendly.

Anyway, I tried delusional ss barrage, and I thinned both barrage dexes at best. Strongside was better, more confident feeling but the same story. I only tried it a couple of times, because again, I'll just get myself all worked up.

Anyway, a couple things from the last few sessions.

I learned twirl and paradox flail today, and got them bsos. I bsos'ed twirl sooo many times, but for some reason, no matter which side it was I would always miss the last handcatch. When I finally got the other twirl, I just kept going and got the flails as well. (don't get worked up, it was "clipper->alt clipper-> pdx flail" both times).

I can feel my calves getting stronger for flails, but they are still a challenge. I can't wait until I can get a nice horizontal dex.

I've been working on blenders, still... I think I have finally found my new best way to hit it, but every session I say "I don't like how I set into it" or "I don't like how I can't hit ___ out of it" and then try and figure out something better. At the moment, I find that setting it straight up and behind and to the far side of you, plus a big blending motion is good. I also like to curl my body slightly backwards and to the side of the bag, so that I can see it for as long as possible. Then again, a week ago my blender was set slightly towards the osis side, and do a big giant turn like David Clavens, and that seemed to work. But I think my new one is good, because I hit this today,

barfly->blender->torque->ducking osis, bsos.

On another note, my torques suck. I thought I had them figured out to the point that I could hit any trick I wanted out of them, but then today I was trying that damn ducking osis, and discovered that the way I land them limits my clipper set height, and I didn't like that. So I tried to look where my clipper foot should be exactly, when I land. This makes me throw my knee more to the opposite side of me, so that I have a larger window to catch the bag where I want it. I dislike the motion right now, because I used to be able to float my way through torques, but now it requires more "torque"...

I've been drilling my gyro/spinning alot lately, using a tip from dear Ben Roscoe. He told me that something that helped his straight sets and consistancy for spinning was to do hundreds and hundreds of gyro sets. So, something I've been doing alot, is

Osis->gyro osis-*rpt,

And I've been getting it pretty good. I landed a few different spinning style combinations out of it, (everything listed is both sides and multiple times)

Spinning Osis->spinning osis
Spinning clipper-> gyro osis
ducking osis->gyro ducking clipper

And new moves hit from spinning are, gyro dyno and gyro blender both sides.

I hit far motion and GYBAS bsos yesterday, just reminded myself.

I also got double switchover b2b,

Today I tried eggbeater->double switchover, and got it both sides. It is still a weird change in momentum, so kinda difficult.

I am still trying to figure out the best way to hit pdx drifters. Drifters have so much space that I can fool around and get them in about 10 different ways any time I want, but pdx drifter is a bit more fussy. I think that I am doing the right movement, but I should chase the bag up more now, because that seemed to work this session.

PDX whirls hurt today, :? Not hurt hurt, but, I could feel them. No matter what I tried. THat makes me think I just strained something yesterday, and now it is working it a bit.

Oh, another few whirly tricks from me.

Symposium whirling far butterfly, both sides.
Whirling mirage (blaze?) bsos.
Whirling far butterfly bsos (I also got matador bsos that run I think..)

It was hilarious, well, slightly comical->deathly, I was trying a furious set after a few days of alot of whirling sets, and that is when I discovered I could symposium whirl set. Today I had to do some 'dexersizes" to get my furious back. Muscle memory is odd.

Anyway, life is now as usual, I am trying to improve individual tricks because I am not happy. If the pattern goes as usual, expect this in the upcoming weeks/months.

Drill the same move 1000 times.
Get the move in strings.
Remember to do strings, start getting really long strings.
Get bored with strings.
Start learning new stuff.
Get crazy, hit stuff.
Realize I shouldn't hit big stuff.
Start learning new, basic-er tricks,
*rpt...

At least I know in two weeks I'll likely have awesome twirls, if I follow the same pattern :)

Oh, another random highlight or two.

Osis->monster->osis->osis->monster->osis.
Foe bsos.

My highschool had a big football game against our 'rivals' a catholic school about half a mile down the road. Anyway, a couple of my friends are on the team so I went, and I haven't shredded at school all week so I decided to get changed into some proper attire.

I played for many many big crowds, and with this in mind I hit many many long strings. Every once in a while, if I am just hitting drills in my basement or something, or going for tricks I really should be going for I get guilty and say "I should really do strings" but, getting at least 5-10 30-50 contact strings today makes me realize that all of the drilling is likely what saves me from just purely doing strings. Also, with strings, long strings, I find that you usually fall into a pattern, so drilling new stuff all the time gets you confident with stuff, and then you can throw them into strings. ANnnnwayy, some highlights..

Whirling Swirl, far swirl, far butter swirl, bsos.
Torque, pdx reverse whirl, eggbeater bsos.
Eggbeater, drifter*6 b2b, whirl->ripwak*rpt, bsos.
Barfly b2b, pdx whirl b2b, blurriest, blurry whirl bsos.
Smear->magellan->plo*rpt, sidewalk->ripwak*rpt bsos,
Blender, dyno, locomotion bsos,
Mobius, blizzard bsos (an extra tee hee goes out for mobius...)

Any of the above that says "*rpt" in the string, isn't bsosed..Just like, part of the bsos....

My longest run of the day, when a group of our "rival" girls (likely 2-3 years younger than I was) requested that I show some of their friends some hacky sack. I just did little basics, for a nice string, but I got a bunch of stuff. I'll write all of the tricks down, good or bad..The string wore me out until I had to do a hand catch, so I guess it was +/- 10 contacts from 50.
Torque, whirl->reverse whirl, pdx leg, pdx mirage, pdx illusion, symp mirages, osis, dynos, ripwalks, atomsmashers, huge ducking string (ducking butters and osis), bunch of pixie stuff, far swirl or two, pdx whirls, I think I started it off with a toe barrage, infinities, drifters, and that is all I can really think of. I remember the whirl->reverse whirl bsos and torques well, because they commented on them mid-string. Then I remember a girl saying something about 'and he throws it around his head!" so I did all of the ducking. The rest of the tricks are just sorta, regular stuff..

Why is it that someone who has never seen you play, asks you to hit a trick after hitting consecutive inside stalls (I did blurriest, my friend told me it was the though...) and then says "Hey, do you think you could like, put your foot around it [and does an air-ATW]?"...

Anyway, I was trying some recidulous stuff here or there just for fun, and I footed spinning ducking far swirl, both sides. I also tried Montage, and well, I actually got pretty damn close once out of the five tries. There is another trick, which I hit both sides (could have been 'the'...Don't want to say it yet ;) ) and I think I'll make it my sick one for the new online competitions. I might try phazing gyro reverse whirling toe as my sick one, because it involves two concepts in which no one ever uses. But then I think of the other trick, which well, feels so delightful when the bag scoops and plops into a nice handcatch. Anyway, me and Liam are "racing" to see who can hit that trick first, but I almost ducked a phazing set today, so it shouldn't be a big problem with any dedication.

Maybe I'll learn slicing sometime soon for a sick trick?

Maybe I should just shut up and keep on drilling basics?

I can't waiiit until I can do flails with confidence. Personally, clipper set same side flail is just about the sexiest move I can pull off. It almost is as satisfying as merlin, but for some reason even better.

Oh, and one of the passerby-ers that was watching, said something I've never heard before.

"Your leg muscles look really [[long pause]] big when you do that"

I guess it was a compliment?

-Jay

Edit

Here is an example of my strings. When I say "I hit this this and this bsos" it is often in this fashion, where you see the pdx whirls in the video. One of the pdx whirls in this video is really ugly, but I had to compensate for a shitty set. [just reassuring that they don't normally look like that]. I don't really care about doing the clipper->alt clipper links, and being "tiltless" because I know the only reason I am doing that is because of either a, uncreativity and stalling until and idea comes to mind, or b, I am not good enough to link the tricks mid-string yet. Meh..

Anyway, here ya go..

could you explain this move a bit more, it sounds like something I'd like to try but I don't really understand. Does the leg that does the rev whirling dex also do the toe stall at the end?
