Everything you Own (ownership)

Post by QuantumBalance »

Modifizzle my nizzle,

I have been thinking lately about the amount of stuff that I have. Let me say, the number of items I "own". Or.. I consider that I own. Ownership is a wierd thing, it's like an invisible link to an item. Items can be easily lost, stolen, broken, or wasted. But ownership is so very powerful. Well, I used to have a crazy room full of things and pictures all over the walls and so much stuff. I'm sure I have over 1000 items if not thousandS of items! It was crazy. I currently have just a corner of a room full of stuff. I can almost name it all from memory, but I can't name it ALL from memory. There are many electronic cables and I don't know my whole library of book titles. One day I hope to be able to name everything I 'own' from memory. No purpose really other than I believe that most modern socialytes would NOT be able to do this. I hope that by the time I move to Idaho I will be able to KNOW everything I 'own' in my active memory... without a cheat sheet hehe.

Cool huh?

so....

Everything I own:

Computer town
Monitor
Speakers and Sub
2 External Hard Drives
Wacom Tablet
Usb gamepad
usb midi keyboard
music stand
Yamaha DJX keyboard
Mic stand
2 Mic set
Clothing
Towels
Toothbrush
Deodorant and Cologne
Mini Dv Camera
cleaning kit
Tapes and charger
blank DVDs and Cds
Pens and wine opener for work
my backpack
watch
mp3 player
BOOKS <----- what a cop out! lol name all your books SHYEA RIGHT!
music books
math
psychology
etc
Electric and Accoustic Guitars with straps
Blue piggy bank :)
Glasses!
various audio cables
oh and a mixer!
plug banks! lol
sun tan lotion
vitamins
a pick box ashley made me
suitcase
electric massager
green and purple trunk
bicycle
bike tool
shoes

Yo! That was TOUGH! And I freakin KNOW that I own less that.. I think EVERYONE ELSE on this forum.

So, please do me a favor and post about your experiences in OWNERSHIP.. including how much you own.. if you want more or less and why. Have you had many disputes over ownership? Had things stolen, stolen from other people? Ever had to move real quick and not been able to take all your stuff or been stressed by it? Do you believe that possessions cause suffering? Anything else? It's an open ended question.

Have fun packrats ;)

The more I own, the more tied down I feel in life. I can't wait to finish school and leave and just take a couple belongings with me.

Nice Blue Turnip. You should start thinking about how you are going to do that because it's pretty intense!

Dan Feary I would be interested to know what you think becaue I don't understand where your :/ face is coming from. It's all good if you don't agree with me I want to know what you have to say or maybe you have never thought of this before and are apprehensive. Please add to the discussion.

I own a computer and about 100 books. Not much else of note.

I don't like possessions much either. Every year I have a "rationalism" day and through out everything that I don't use on account of sentimentality for objects being ridiculous.

I've never seen a link between people and their objects on acid, and further more, I think Tim Leary is full of crap.

I don't know much about Tim Learys philosophy. I don't feel the need to know.

I think its a copout to say that you own other things that arent of note :) What are they!? hehe

you better believe it buddy!

i think soon I'm gonna sell my large electric keyboard although i will totally have to get another one later.. but for moving purposes it makes more sense to sell something that i can always get again and have a more stable footing where im going! lol i could imagine not wanting to part with my super cool yamaha djx but ... god bless it sir!! life is change and life is good!

i was wondering about amount of clothing.. what if i had a small amount of clothing but did more frequent laundry? does anyone have any experience with it? I actually have a mediumish amount of clothing right now with a lean towards the not much side hehe.

what if im gonna turn into a bum? lol jk OR AM I?

actually i was hoping to turn into a ninja footbag monk! So.. Live your DREAM PEOPLE!

would a ninja footbag monk have a camera? probably a really small one    lol anyone wanna buy my single blue pixle camera? haha pm dont post ;)

anyway, also I believe I will stick with electric guitar over accoustic.

now I have almost just halves all my possessions.. YES

computer
headphones
small camera
suitcase
backpack
clothing
shoes
electric guitar (with case that holds cable and pics)
magic potions (and lotions lol)

and a bicycle which i will sell before i move.

coool :) I'll be a walker until I find a bicycle

ITS LIKE AN MMORPG DUDE! IM PLAYING OUTSIDE!!!!!

alright well I hope this has lightened your day.

Big move. Now I see why you're selling stuff instead of taking it with... Bike's pretty useless during winter anyway. Assuming Idaho gets as much snowfall as Minnesota.

You seem to be missing some things that to me seem essential.

What tooth brush/tooth paste? for example
What about pots/pans/dishes/forks/knives? (do you eat out every meal)
What do you sleep and sit on?

That is like, the number one thing teens and college students completely forget about when thinking of what they'll need when moving out of their parents. Heh.

umm forks/knives/dishes/pots might be important for your daily life but they are easily replaced ..I'm not sure about the states but here in Germany I have been to second hand shops and they pretty much gives them to you thats how cheap it is. Do I need a super high class pot? Do I need to eat like the king on plates plated with gold? Do I need forks and such that arent bent? ^^ ...I do need sharp knives though... and a first aid kit to come along with them 8O

One thing I've found that can be very helpful if you are a pack-rat is to take digital photos of your belongings that you do not want to throw out or give away. People often hang on to things that they don't really need that take up physical space purely for sentimental or nostalgic purposes.

I took pictures of many of my old t-shirts and jeans from high school days before giving them to goodwill. It was tough to part with them because of the nostalgic value but to know I'll always have the photos makes me not feel bad about it.

A good rule of thumb I read once was "If you haven't used it in the past year, sell it, throw it out or give it away".
