Drifter Swirl (Swifter)

Post by cd »

Drifter Swirl (Swifter)
CLIP >> OP IN [DEX] > SAME SWIRL [DEX] > SAME CLIP [XBD][DEL]

I've only seen this move done once or twice ever (ellis-mtl video)... how in the world does one crank out that swirl?? Is it all one motion, like a double dex similar to a barrage or double drifter, or must you separate the dexterities?

Tips please!

A downtime or uptime swifter? They are very different moves.

Yes I'd like tips on downtime swifter also.
I've been very close countless times but usually what happens is that I crank a big spinning motion for the drifter while jumping up slightly to have enough room for the swirl.

usually the bag hits the knee of my support leg as I'm trying to swirl.

downtime, nick.

Sounds like I've got the same problem as you, max. There's just not enough room to swirl, and I either hit it with my leg or I knock legs together.

maybe working on downtime swirls is the key.

Massive Bump, requesting more tips from all of the gracious individuals who can hit Swifters.

(edit)

I guess specifically the problem for me is the turning and how you get a swirl at all. I can far swirl consistantly, and I have a large swirling radius but with the drifter infront of the swirl, and with little/no jump like the far swirl, I can't seem to get any swirling motion.

I can swifter. I can drifter and swirl well. drifter mid time and big swirl. Stretch out your opposite shoulder because that's what hurts sometimes when i do it. the swirl is so thrusty that my other arm swings out to compensate the balance and if it's not warmed you can pull a muscle.

Most people do swifters mid/up time, but it's also possible to do them downtime. Those are very rare. I can't hit downtime swifter, and have no advice on them.

I do my swifter middish/uptime. In a regular drifter, there is a slight hop towards the setting clipper. In swifter, that hop is kinda melded with the hop for a far swirl. I should also caution you about set height. You will probably learn this trick by using a muted stepping set, which is fine. That said, the higher your stepping set is, the more awkward the swirl will be. Try and keep the set relatively low but fast; the idea is you want to get into swirl position as fast as possible without expending too much energy on your "set." Eventually you won't even be thinking of the first dex as a stepping set, and it will be something in between actual stepping and a quick mirage (like a drifter).

Good luck.

excellent tips ken. i havent even tried it since reading them (since i've only just now read them  ), but you mentioning learning it with a muted stepping set makes a lot of sense to me. im pretty sure i'll hit that shit next time i play.

One thing that helped me learn to hit mid-time swifter was remembering to turn into the set as you prepare to do the swirl. So if you were setting from a left foot clipper you would want to continue turning your body to the right after the mirage dex, maybe a quarter turn in total from the original postition you were facing. If you did a nice low-ish step set like Ken described after you complete the turn the bag should be directly to the left of your body at a comfortable height to swirl it.

Nailing the swirl is more about turning your body than anything else. And you're gonna want to jump into it about as much as you would a grifter, if not more. The swirl dex is completed at the apex of the jump.
