I've done a bit more researching, 'cause my shins are all that is really preventing me from playing, and I've been in severe pain for a numbers of months now. Something that I wasn't sure about before was icing and heating, because I read that both are important, but I think I am a little more clear on it now:
Icing is for immediately after the injury sets in (within 72 hours) (or if the area is swollen)
Heating is for after this period of time, if the problem persists.
Here's a helpful link that I found:
http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/DS/00271.html

What I'm wondering is if anybody has used an "elastic bandage" or "compression sleeve" to help shin splints, if it worked, and what kind they got. This website said that something like this will help, so I definitely want to try it. I'd also read "elevate" before, but didn't know that it had to be above your heart, so I am going to try to prop my feet up while I sleep and see if that helps too.
I also read about "wall-pushups" for shin splints. Is that what I see footbaggers doing when they put the ball of their foot against a wall, and lean their body in? (Or is that a calf stretch?...)

I'm going to start doing more toe taps, and massaging my shins (any thoughts on using tiger balm for shin splint massage?), and trying to do the elevation thing whenever possible (maybe in the bath...)

Wall pushup as instructed by my Dr.:

Fashion yourself a one to one & 1/2 inch (2.5 - 3.75 cm) high platform that is wide enough for your feet (spaced roughly shoulder length apart) and also about 12 inches (30 cm) deep.

Place the platform against a wall.

Stand with your toes & balls of your feet on the platform and your heels on the ground.

Place both hands on the wall (like you would place them on the ground for a pushup). Lean towards the wall, push yourself back from the wall, repeat.

Hope that helps.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I haven't had shin splints since like 2004.

I don't do toe taps, I don't wear insoles. I don't do any kind of exercise to stop them at all. I used to get them really badly, and would take strong pain killers before playing.

The only thing I've worked on that I can see attributed to removing shin splints is working on my form. Not necessarily how things look, but how things feel - because I know the way I to a lot of moves feels a lot differently to how it used to - much more efficient. I'd like to say I've focused on one single thing, like cushioning my landings a lot better, but I'm always working on different aspects to my form. I don't know if this is why my shin splints have gone away, but it might be worth keeping in mind.

Ha, shin splints just caught up with me too. It sucks, and I'm still basically a beginner, but I've been icing my shins after two or more hours of kicking.

Works for me. But I also like the stretching and tapping ideas too.

I'm headed to buy new insoles for my lavers too.

This year I started running on track for the first time in my life, and as anyone who's been training on track probably knows, I got shin splints. (Not for the first time in my life, but for the first time in years.) But I also got excellent advice on how to treat them.

Shin splints (normally) are an inflammation there where the muscle joins the bone. The Finnish version of Wikipedia suggests a type of massage where you simply just rip the "joints" (don't know the correct term) off. (If you're planning to do something like this it's probably best you got a sports masseur to it.)
What I did was a less extreme version of it: take a wet towel and, gently but firmly, stretch the lower calf muscle to the left and to the right with it. It helped a lot.

Also the reason why shin splints happen is usually muscular tension in the calf muscles and the Achilles tendons - stretch them.

i don't have shinsplints right now, but when i touch my shins, it hurts like hell. even if i just put a finger on it and push with a tiny amount of pressure, i couldn't imagine hitting it. it pretty much feels like a realy bad bruise on both legs, is this connected to shinsplints? i got a bad case of shinsplints and have been working on everything to keep them away: stretching, taps, form practice, and icing/heating. i really hope this isn't a symptome and i am getting shinsplints again

Shin splints have absolutely raped me in the last few months.

Thanks to the people who have contributed to this thread, especially Erik. I need to fix this shizzle.
