Locking Threads

Post by Jeremy »

Look, something that really pisses me off on this forum is Rob locking threads for what seems like very petty reasons, or beacuse of one or two stupid posts. Someone comes up with a good topic for debating and maybe one or two idiots make insulting posts and the thread immediatly gets locked. Why? I personally don't think any threads should be locked, but if you do have to lock threads, do it for a good reason - like if the discussion completely breaks down and there are like 10 or more flamming posts in a row. Not 2 or 3.
What do other people think?

I don't know.. I'm presuming Rob exercised his judgement in doing what he. It's a bit unfair to ask someone to exercise anything but one's own judgement.

Or at least that's how I think it went...

Obviously, Rob thinks it is necessary to lock those threads, and quite frankly his opinion is the only one that makes any difference considering he is the moderator who is placing the locks.

I think what he is doing is totally justified.

Because it only takes two "idiots" in a thread to turn the whole thing to shit.

Don't you think that locking a topic because more people are talking about something else, then the topic of the thread that they are writing in is a good reason?

How would you know where to draw the line for how many flaming posts in a row it "requires" for a thread to be locked.

I don't know. Maybe in the future Rob will just start freezing accounts more often. He started to do that with Sam's QuantumBalance account. Although I'm not sure if that was the first time someone got frozen or not.

i've noticed that the mods get mad at people for posting useless posts BUT they are the ones that do it the most. i've noticed the past couple days there has been some posts not even relating to the topic

i think they abuse their powers

yet they do do a great job in shutting down the out of control threads but some should be left alone

The thing is, the few of us know we abuse our powers, and are hypocrits. The other thing is, we don't care. Do as we say, not as we do. :) Maybe not every decision was the best choice to make, but we still make them and stand by them.

If you're still upset about the locking of that Christianity thread, then go cry about modifieds abuse on flipsider. I'm sure they'll welcome you.

It's unfortunate that the way things work is when you start bothering me that I put a hit on you, and start making it my personal goal to piss you off. But, don't play with the bull if you aren't prepared to get the horns.

And just so we're clear, I'm not the only one moderating. But thanks for making the poll solely about me. *puts chalk on horns*

And to anyone who wants to see my apparant recent spree of off topic posts. Do some sluething over here

Hey, I lock threads too you know. ;)

There are certain topics that are bad, (ie this one, if you have a moderation issue, take it up with the moderators, posting a thread only makes you look bad and singles you out to us moderators as instigators).

Threads are locked, deleted, etc when we deem them inappropriate. Personally, I've been moderating forums for years before I even played footbag, I can see spam and flame wars way before they happen, and we've got to keep this to a minimum. Usually, myself and rob discuss what's going on before we take action.

Now, if I leave this thread open, every other post will be "yea we need this moderation," or "no, closing threads is bad." What I'm saying is, this thread was only made to single out Rob as a problem. Therefore, I'm leaving this thread open as a test. If you REALLY think you have something to add, reply, but stick with the poll. If there are more posts like I said there would be, I'll close this thread, as it's a direct attack on Rob.

Right as I was finishing reading all the posts on this "locking" thread,
I thought, "Boy, somebody should go over and lock that 'nonviolent resistance' thread"

Lo and behold, my mind must have been read(or I read someone's mind). It is now locked. Is there a better way to end a thread that was recovering, than to lock it down and leave an insult?

May as well remove the thread entirely, though I stand behind what I said there.

Who am I to complain though, if I moderated, I would probably lock more threads than Rob.

This one especially...CLICK... LOCKED!

Meh. I've been annoyed once by a locked thread.

In fact, I've only noticed once.

Can't really complain.

Rob's a good mod, despite his strong dislike of me. THere was one time that I disagreed with a locking, but that doesn't matter. What matters is whetheer or not ROB wants to lock it. He's the modified pimp.

One of the deciding reasons in posting this thread under discussion and not in the kicking circle was because Rob can't lock it
Look don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful to the moderators for doing an excellent job on the whole, but it just seems like the threads that are being locked, especially by rob and especially in the kicking circle are ridiculous. Why is it a problem if the thread strays off topic? Surely everybody are capable of ignoring the idiots making the flame wars. Look obviously some judgement is needed and I feel that at the moment Rob is far to far on the side of cenorship. I'm not asking that he start thinking exactly the same as me (although that would be nice), all I want is a little more slack - only locking threads when the whole conversation completely degrades into crap.

That's the problem. Most people aren't capable of ignoring them (including me). I'm sure this is one of the many reasons why the mods make the decisions that they make.

Oh god, if there's anything I'm capable of, it's letting arguments pass me by.

I've never changed anyone's mind in debate, so I've stopped debating. Perhaps a much wiser and more articulate person than me could change someone's opinion on *anything*, but I can't, so I don't waste people's time.

i usually only join in on a debate if im really bored. and when im really bored, i'll throw something in that i find funny, even though it may or may not be correct  . other people probably do this too, so the validity of alot of debates goes down the drain. i find that funny because some people get so seriously involved, while others say stuff just to piss the serious ones off.

Hah, I'm not a moderator. I'm the administrator. I lock what I want, where I want, when I want. So don't think you can get all abusive in this section just because it doesn't SAY I can lock things. In fact...look at your post. Anyways, This isn't getting locked because the critisism seems to be constructive, and it lets me know who opposes my rule. I have a list with alllllll the bad names on it.

He's makin a list, checkin it twice, gonna find out whos naughty or nice, the administrator is coming, to towwwwwwwn.

Can't Robby just delete ridiculous posts? If too many of their posts get deleted you could freeze their account...If you can't...you should be able to. What fun is a bull that simply maims the crippled...you should be ripping them limb from limb and signing your name with that chalk on the back/inside of their skull.
