I've joined my departments co-ed intramural volleyball team. We play with the softer volleyballs, which was a key factor in my decision. Even then they hurt a little bit after playing for a while. We had our first practice today, which was fun. I learned a lot about the basics of the game. I'd only ever really played volleyball in gym class in high school, so it had been quite some time since I had even touched a volleyball. I learned a bit about the team strategy, and the roles you play at different positions. I like the idea of working together in team sports; its one of the things that appeals to me most in basketball, and is missing (not necessarily in a bad way) in footbag. I'm also excited to get to know my teammates, as they are largely people in my department who I don't know too well. My basketball background helps me with a few things in volleyball (lateral movement, jumping), but the timing for other things is very different (spiking) and I need to learn it. It's definitely a fun challenge learning to play a sport. I'm used to being in the teaching position (footbag, basketball, juggling), so it's a nice reversal to be the sucky one asking the basic questions.

The only negative from today was I got whiplash from playing, because my body wasn't used to some of the movements I was doing. That means no footbag for at least a day. In good footbag news, Luis is going to give me some burnable DVDs, which may help out big time for Rory's video. I'll try them tonight. I will try not to pin my hopes on this, but I can't help but get excited at the prospect of recovering lost footage.

Luis' DVDs didn't work. I'll try and buy some tomorrow and hope those work. Definitely disappointed... I've been a bit stressed out lately, and this would have picked up my spirits some for sure. :(

The reason I took the time I did off from Footbag was largely due to the fact that there is three seasons worth of winter in Ithaca. But I can't wait to come back!

School and life have been super stressful these last couple days, but I think I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Or does that imply I'm about to die?

My volleyball-induced whiplash was surprisingly bad, but I'm 98% over it now. I still feel it a bit when I look all the way to my left, but in everyday life and shred I hardly notice it. I got in sessions yesterday and today; maybe it would have been smarter to rest the neck, but I desperately needed the stress relief.

Last night's shred was just me and Luis at the gym. I played in baggy shorts and made a point to avoid ducking and diving tricks. Possibly inspired by Erik's recent Laroche vid, I made a point to try weird and styly links, which ended up being a lot of fun.

Highlights:

*toe symp egg-symp dod. This felt real styly.
*bunch of fairy stuff I never do, like nallegam-magellan and fairy ss whirl.
*pogo style ripwalk to no-plant gyro osis. This was real fun.
*PSWx4, real easy and first try. My record is 8, but I was just happy with how these felt.
*a few DSCs. The secret is to set them at roughly normal spin height, and just focus on making each spin fast and tight.

Today was a brief return to nice weather. It was pushing things a bit, but I decided I'd play outside. Luis and I met on campus around 4:30, which was the very tail-end of the good weather, but we had a good 30 minutes before it got cool enough to really affect my game. I was smarter about the cold this time around. I played in a t-shirt as opposed to a jersey, and I spent more time focussing on long runs than on big tricks/combos. I was very aware that if I cooled off, that would be the end of the session.
DSCs were NOT happening today. I think it was the playing surface that made it hard for me. Grippy concrete almost locks my feet on the ground, and I feel it grinding at my soles as I try and spin. I'm not going to worry about it.

Highlights:
*some surprisingly good looks at genesis. I'd like to see these on vid, so I can better understand what I'm doing right and wrong. Still, I was encouraged.
*a few good tricks like HPD and ducking torque first try.
*mostly just playing outside.

Got dinner with Luis. Something made me sick. Hopefully feel better in the morning. :?

That first link is super styley!

that 2nd one is crazy. pogo *backspin motion* muted gyro osis?

what about pogo ss symp whirl/symp ddd?

In the last session I blogged about, I complained:

Happily enough, I was right not to worry about my double spins. I've had 2 sessions since then, both on non-concrete floors, and my double spins have been fine. I had a session yesterday where I hit probably 7 or 8 double spins, with a very high success rate.

Highlights:

*double spinning toe. Yeah it's a bail, but it's also a new trick and I played out of it.
*pixie diving clipper-DST
*a run with DST and DSC in it
*my first genesis? I'd like to see video, more for the set than for the whirl. Felt weird.
*fairy ss blender. Not new, just cool.
*dim-duck butter-DSC-pdx torque. 8)

Shred today was pretty laid back. It was real humid out, which kinda sucked the energy out of me. I hit a few DSCs, had good mental game, and hit a couple new tricks.

Highlights:

*a run that started with food, and had both mullets in there. Dropped on DSC.
*tapping rev. whirl.
*flipside ducking swirl
*ducking swirl bsos! :D

DLed Sam's new vid, but I can't figure out how to watch it.

Last night I finally downloaded VLC player. It's one of those programs where you wonder why the hell you didn't DL it sooner. Now I can watch Sam's new Worlds vid, as well as stuff like Regamey's CSS7 vids which I previously couldn't watch on my computer. It's really sweet.

I left the house today to be very pleasantly surprised by the weather. It felt like summer all over again; seriously shorts and t-shirt weather. Awesome. I borrowed a camera from school and got in a shred with Luis. He hit some good stuff like dyno-dyno, and his spins are improving. I ended up having a pretty ass session, despite the perfect weather. I spent the whole session working on genesis, which was frustrating.

As you may recall, in the last session I blogged about, I wondered:
C-Fan wrote: Highlights:
*my first genesis? I'd like to see video, more for the set than for the whirl. Felt weird.
.
Well, this session I "hit" 4 or 5 geneses and got them on film. Unfortunately they were all the or thin at best. I'd like to say the problem is the whirl (I flare it up, so the shoe is at hip height in the worst cases), but the reason the whirl sucks is because my furious set isn't good enough. The logical shredder in me tells me that I really shouldn't be bothering with this trick until I get my furious set stronger and higher. The greedy shredder in me tells me that it's still pretty cool to hit genesis even if its thin, and that maybe I'd have better luck with nemesis. Honestly, I'm not that anxious to hit this trick, so I think I'll let it go. If I get into a phase where I start drilling furious and it gets better, maybe I'll revisit this trick. Who knows, maybe I'll say something different in a week.

Anyway, here are highlights:

*pixie diving ss swirl. New trick, hit it a couple times.
*ducking far swirl bsos. This was in the seal for one of my thin geneses
*getting my geneses on tape so I can learn from them and possibly troubleshoot in the future.

CFJ2 is next weekend. I wonder how the weather will be? I doubt it will be summer hot like today, but I hope it won't be winter cold either. You never can tell with Ithaca. I also hope everybody remembers to bring a sleeping bag and a pillow. I can't really stress this enough. We're offering crash space, not beds. I'm excited to see lots of friends up here, play some intense 4square, watch people go nuts in circle, and just hang out in general. I look forward to seeing you all real soon!

Now I just need to get my homework and studying out of the way before then...

Had my first volleyball game with my department's intramural team. It was a lot of fun, even though we lost in a close one. I played in my g-units, maybe to remind me that there are physical activities that I don't suck at. Playing volleyball was a cool experience, in that it's so incredibly different from footbag. The biggest difference for me was the team aspect. I knew that if I messed up, my mistake cost the entire team and not just myself. On the other hand, I could also make up for my teammates mistakes. It's also an interesting change knowing that you can't do everything yourself. In footbag you might miss a trick because you set it badly, or because your dexes were off, or you might hit everything well except for the final stall. But at every stage of the trick you are responsible. In volleyball, you can give somebody a perfect set, and they can mess up the spike, or vice versa. It's a lot less predictable, and you never really shoulder full responsibility. Overall it was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed playing a new sport. That said, I definitely want to win at least one game this season. If we face another team which is as weak as tonight's opponents, it should be do-able.

Right now I'm pretty cool with our loss tonight, but right after we lost I was a bit disappointed... mostly because I made a couple mistakes towards the very end of the match, and I felt like the loss was my fault. In retrospect that's really silly, and now I know better, but at the time I didn't want to go directly home with a bad taste in my mouth. So I went to the gym to play some footbag and shoot some hoops. This was a good decision. I played most of the session with a big, 8 panel sandbag (a JaqSaq) which was fun. I felt a bit like Luis Monhollon. I hit 2 good highlights with it, and decided I wanted to hit them with my Clavens bag so they would be more "official." Unfortunately, my Clavens bag has a big hole (and neither Luis nor I have patching tape), so I was only able to replicate one of the highlights with a proper footbag.

Highlights:

*6 free throws in a row.
*far symple swirl x2. New record. Got it with both bags.
*flipside DSC! :o Sealed it with an infinity and had the presence of mind to hit strongside DSC-pdx mirage in the seal, to a few more contacts. So DSC bsos! :D

That last highlight felt like a bit of a milestone for me. I've always been pretty bad at spinning, so I never would have expected that I'd hit DSC bsos. Hell, even 3 months ago I would have laughed at that thought. The BSOS aspect is probably the most exciting thing for me; it means that my strong side is good enough that I can hit it under pressure, midstring, and without planning for it. I figured I could probably fluke it flip, but bsos is a step above.
For somebody who's been playing over 10 years, it's particularly thrilling to see that my game is still expanding after all this time. Love footbag. 8)

Out of practice, out of shape, and out of time to do work before the tournament. Tough spot to be in. On one hand I'm psyched that all my friends are coming to my hood this weekend, and that we will party and play footbag, but at the same time I wish it wasn't this particular weekend just because of schoolwork. I feel like I haven't had time to get my freestyle game to tourney-level preparedness because of school, and on the flip of that school might take a hit from this tourney too. I hope not. School is tough.

I went to the community center today to watch a Suns preseason game, study, and play footbag. The Suns game was fun. It was my first time watching this year's roster together on the court. The Suns big offseason acquisition was Grant Hill, an old favorite of mine. I wear his Pistons jersey all the time when I play footbag, because his comeback from injury inspires me, since I've also had to change my game after an ankle injury. In his case it was a bit more tragic though, because he was one of the best players in the game pre-injury, and now is just a good role player, while in my case I could argue that I'm actually better post-injury, if a little less athletic.

Shred wasn't so hot. Earlier this week I developed a mysterious left-quad injury, which had me limping around campus. It mostly cleared up over the last two days, but I feel like I've lost some stamina. I started the session today with a bigass beginner bag, but it was really frustrating me. I ended up playing with my Clavens, despite it having a big hole that kept spitting out beads. I figure that I can get it fixed this weekend, so it would be a better tradeoff to play with it today and get my confidence up than to not use it and keep the beads in. I think it was a good decision.

Highlights:
*blaze-smog-phx-tomahawk
*duck clip x2 -duck butter x2-tomahawkx2
*spin butterfly-ducking butterfly rpt to spin clipper-duck clipper rpt
*whirling infinity-WHAT?!?, with a DSC in the seal.

That last one was probably my favorite combo of the day. Whirling set felt pretty easy today (one side only). Maybe I'll try for some harder whirling tricks this weekend. Figure I can ask Dave for advice if I need any.

At the very end of the session, I took my shoes off to let them air out, so I messed around barefoot. In a nice surprise, I hit a trick that I hadn't done in like 5 months: TATW. 8) Barefoot, but still.

I'm excited to get my Clavens bag fixed, and hopefully to get a new bag from Waylon. I'm also really pumped to eat Wings, and to see all my friends. It should be good times.

Ken: the event is in Bartels Hall
Matt K: Varton?
Ken: No, Bartels. Bravo Alpha...uh... R as in...I dunno what R stands for.

 Yeah, that was funny. I was on the phone so much this weekend, and so frazzled with organizing things/giving directions, that I wonder how much other surreally unintelligible things I said.

The tournament is finally over now. I feel like I can exhale a bit, but I have a labor econ midterm in 16 hours, so I can't fully relax just yet. Just wanted to thank everybody for coming. I had a good time, and I hope you all did too. I'd like to do a write-up of the weekend, but we'll see if I can find the time.

Thanks again everybody.

Just got out of my Labor Economics midterm, and I feel it went pretty well. I still have like 4 papers/projects to do in the next week, but it was this midterm that had me most concerned about running a tournament. I know I got one problem wrong (stupid cross substitution effect  ) but it's possible I would have missed that even if I had spent all weekend studying. So that's a big relief.

I've got a volleyball game tonight, which I'm excited about. Maybe I'll sneak in some light shred as a warmup beforehand.

Really feel like there's no time to catch my breath these days. Just gotta run the alpine blurry torque, and hope I come out of it with decent grades. I think one sign of me cracking mentally is my recent desire to listen to shitty 80s music:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip1zsUIosoA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1FeEezee4s

Had our second department volleyball game tonight, so I decided to warm up with Luis before it. We both kinda sucked today, probably due to the venue. There were real strong lights from above, and having 3 shadows really threw me off. Luis was distracted by people dancing and moving around us, which I can understand. I finally started playing decently at the very end of the session, but only for like 10 minutes. The lone highlight for me was hitting a couple symp whirling swirls that felt like my best ever. I hadn't hit that trick in a few years either. Maybe I'll film it next time, and if it's clean I'll try and put it in the repertoire.

Volleyball was much better this week. Our team is communicating better, and on a personal level I feel like I made fewer errors, and was able to maintain my concentration and intensity throughout. We lost in 2 sets this time, but our opponents were way better than us. Last time we lost in 3 sets, and should have won, so I felt a lot happier with this game's result. I still would love to win a game before the season ends.

At CFJ2 Matt Cross gave me some patching tape, which I really really needed. Thanks Matt. Tonight I patched up my Clavens bag, which enables me to have solo sessions again (I used to just use Luis' bags when we played together). I was pretty tired from studying, and was tempted to just stay home and drink a beer, but decided that was depressing and I'd have plenty of time for that when I'm in my 30s, so I went to the gym and got in a solo shred.

I'm really glad I played tonight. It was my first good session in a while. I had that lingering whiplash for a bit before CFJ2, then school killed me, I hardly got to play at CFJ2 and played badly, and had one bad session after it. I must admit, my confidence was beginning to wane a bit, as questions like "am I over the hill?" began to float through my head. Happily, all I needed was one good session to remind me that that's all nonsense.

I went into today's session with 2 goals: focus on my breathing technique, and try and hit a stepping trick out of DSC. The latter was a minor goal, and I pretty much forgot about it halfway through the session. I did well with the first goal. I focused on breathing, and also generally just let the game come to me. There were more bails than usual, but the tricks that I did hit felt more controlled. I remember really focusing on my breathing back when I was going for 10 fearless, and this reminded me of it.

Highlights:

*phasing ss osis, with a DSC in the seal. New trick!
*bl. whirl x4 -PSW-PSW off my foot. Surprised how easily the first 4 came. I should try and break my record, which is only 5.
*food-mullet a couple times. The mullet isn't as solid as I'd like. I can BOP out of it, but nothing bigger. I may work on this later.
*mullet-PSW-PSW-pdx torque off my foot.
*flip mullet-PSW-PSW-superfly off my foot.
*13 contacts of rubberman to a good string
*one good Symp Whirling Swirl
*getting to watch part of a real NBA game on TV. :) God that offseason was long.

Overall it just felt really good to play relaxed, hit some cool stuff, and feel confident with my game again.

God school is sucking now. I really hope I come out of this experience with a good job, because the opportunity costs are pretty high. I don't have a social life, I don't get to footbag as much as I want to, and I'm constantly stressed out. I'm at the point stress-wise where footbag doesn't even fully let me escape.

Got in a session tonight with Luis.

Highlights:

*mullet-PSDLO, sauced the mullet in the seal.
*flip mullet-superfly
*symp DDD. This is probably the hardest of the basic superfly variants for me.
*a few DSCs. I'm not actively skooling them anymore, but I don't want to lose them either.
*phasing ss osis again, but didn't feel as good.

Forgotten highlight from last session:

*gravedigger-pdx torque.

Not as successful with my breathing control this time, but I had some fun and got some exercise. Packed up all my NBA jerseys in my suitcase tonight. Even indoors it's too cold to play in them, so I'm gonna play in t-shirts for the next few months, and break out the trademark glove look too.

Shit, I should be in bed.

Quickie entry.

1. School sucks ass.
2. I'd love a bag from you Zeb (I still haven't received your tourney bags... should I be worrying?)
3. NBA season kicking off helps things a bit.
4. It's really cold in Ithaca now, which makes it harder/trickier to go to/from the gym. Need to be careful about warming up and cooling down during sessions.

Solo session at the gym tonight, pretty casual. Still got some nice highlights.

*gyro whirl! new trick, and not that hard. The problem is that I "the" it like 55% of the time. Still cool, and still pumped to hit a few clean ones.
*gyro whirl-pdx torque
*gyro whirl with blurriest bsos and bl. whirl bsos in the seal.
*blurriest x2 and bl. whirl x2 in the same string, going opp directions.
*mullet-WHAT?!? 8)
