Butterfly/Down Swirl

Butterfly/Down Swirl
SET >> OP OUT [DEX] > OP SWIRL [DEX] > SAME CLIP [XBD][DEL]

any tips on this one? i've tried it a couple ways, footed it a bit.. but definitly not really close to sealing it. should the swirling dex take place before, after, or while the support leg is also dexing? any tips of any kind would be appreciated. Thanks!

you should jump into the swirling dex and do it as high and as early as possible. Technically the swirl should happen after the butterfly dex (if you watch it on video) but you should be starting the swirl dex straight away - don't worry too much with the butterfly dex - it should happen without too much thought. getting good at dlo and eggbeater is really really helpful for this move.

I have a strong swirl that I can *really* count on. Butterfly swirls and normal symple swirls really aren't that much different. Here are my tips on butter swirl:

1- set rather high (just above waist high) and not too close to your body.
2- as the bag is reaching its apex jump hard and high from your swirling foot
3- start doing the butter dex as you litterally try and smack your ass with the inside of the swirling foot.
4- Ideally you should find yourself having *just finished* the butter dex, your swirling foot is just under your ass (think a bit like a flying clipper) and over the bag. Once you've cleared that part you're basically done.
5- Do the whole move while jumping slightly forward.

Butterfly Swirl

Post by Sergey »

Hey guys, I've been lately working on my far swirls and got pretty good at hitting them. Can hit 5/5 regular far swirl, 2/5 the spinning one.

How do I train myself to be able to hit butterfly swirls given that I'm uber good at butterflies?

You input is much appreciated!
Thanks! :D

Interesting question. I've been hitting butterfly swirl moves a bit lately (only on one side  ), and I never hit far swirls, although I can and have. I'm a bit stuck for tips, I guess you want a high butterfly dex, and really focus on the swirl - the butterfly component should be easy.

I also find that it's pretty easy to hit unclean butterfly swirls, where the swirl dex is either under the butterfly leg, or even before it, turning the move into more like a dada curve than a butterfly swirl. I try to focus on making sure the swirl dex actually is a swirl dex. Other than that I can't think of anything. I've never drilled the move, but I find I can hit it fairly easily. I guess my strong dlos and eggbeaters may help a bit, but if you can hit far swirl, it should be almost there. (I hit butterfly swirl way before hitting far swirl; like butterfly swirl in 2002 before I was guiltless and far swirl in 2004 I think - in the middle of doing a demo at a my old high school if I recall correctly).

Alright, I guess I know what you are saying Jeremy...you're absolutely right about your strong dlos and eggbeaters, being good at these two is definitely helping you hit the trick. I find that lifting my ass up in the air to in order to give some room for the swirl is my biggest problem. I got the motion down, but I just can't seem to be able to jump high enough.

EDIT: Does anybody else think that skooling eggbeaters would give me a god foundation for a butt-swirl?

i set the bag a little differently for butterfly swirl than other tricks. I set the bag so it slightly arcs towards where my clipper would be, plant quickly afterwards, and hop over it with the butter swirl.

far butter swirl:

set waist high with just a little arc (not enough arc to place it directly where your clipper is at time of set. you want to have to jump towards the bag a little bit to keep it tight, and to have less rolloff from a set that is arced too much). Left your infinity dex knee way high to open up the dex window for the swirl while putting all your weight on the leg that is going to do the swirl dex. as soon as the bag falls under the first dex, rock that symple swirl around, small and fast.

Just don't set too high and practice it a few times. it's easier than far swirl, definitely. shouldn't give you too much trouble if you can do symple swirls.

I also set the bag in more of an arc than for a regular butterfly and turn my body slighly so the bag is more behind me like a swirl. Also, don't think butterfly when you are doing the move or you will do it too late. The first dex is performed sooner than normal on a butterfly. In order to hit a really deep butterfly swirl so that I can step out of it, I set and as the bag is going up I begin to throw my leg over the bag, and jump hard off of the swirling leg getting it high and above my knee. Then I make sure that it continues in a circular motion and sort of lean slightly away from the bag while the dex is happening. As my body falls over the bag and the dex completes I focus hard on the catch and lean my body into it. Make sure you perform the swirl high enough so that your swirling foot doesn't hit the ground on the catch. Sink down and pause on the catch and you can perform just about anything out of it. I always think of doing a quicker than normal butterfly to start it off and that seems to help with the timing of the move.

there's 2 ways to do butter swirls from what i've seen. i think the dopest ones are done my juho marjo. watch videos of him doing them. he does them huge butter dex followed by the swirl dex, and there is an obvious separation betwen the dexes. he practicaly has his foot planted when he starts the swirl dex.. lots of people do them with "stacked" dexes (i stole this term from jorden) where both dexes happen at kind of the same time. i can do them both ways but i feel it is easier to play out of "stacked" butter swirls because my plant leg contacts the ground at about the same time my delay foot contacts the bag, which makes it easier to bounce out of into stepping or what have you. also it keeps them in my normal playing set height, where as to do them juho style i need to set much higher, and it breaks up my flow a bit more.

Both dexes at the same time in your head. They will appear divided. Turn into the set, pivot on your support leg pretty hard at the start. Set the bag straight up, not across. You move, not the bag.
