hey david!
really intersting post about style.
I totally agree with all of it, and i think that honza tends to be a bit on the harsh side - i had the same thing with honza at worlds, we were talkking and takumi was playing right in front of us and im a big fan of his, asnd i said oh man takumi is really good at footbag and honza said he really didnt like takumis style or anthing and that it was all unclean. like the spinning stepping thing is always a bit iffy for most ppl but apparently ppl slowmovied byrins and it was clean , and i dont know what takumi thinks about it all but ill ask him.
i would add a few things , these are kind of exceptions sometimes maybe
1) distance travelled, if you get to see this guy called bennky kellman, he did a routien in qualifying open at worlds, and the best bit about his game was that it was constantly like a blender that had the supports gone, so kind of like making a banana smoothie, but theres no cup, all the milk and butter and banana just goes everywhere - but that was what made it look so good. he used all that space, but it wasnt really on purpose, ive played with him a few times and he just goes everywhere
2) i totally agree with this, that was how ales taught me when he came to austrlia. when you spin you should stay over the same concrete block. i think using the x and y axis like maths can be really useful when teaching footbag. thers a lot of times when i feel like i am chasing that bag trying to catch up with my set. like one of my mobius is like woah woah gotta get that bag, the other is like i really controlled it like you said. i think this has to do with straight sets and the philosophy : the bag goes straight up and down and you just move around it. i dont think it works all the tiem (eg: pdx whirl) but its a really good idea i think .
3) i really liked allan haggetts style for this reason
4) the footbag prophet *1 once said that in routines you want to be controlled but aggressive, really finish those tricks by just putting in heaps of eeffort, and letting that effort fill your techinique up. when i am learnign tricks thers usually 1 thing that i have to concentrate on to make sure it works well like with drifter i concentrate on cranking my dex leg ankle druing the dex and that seems to make the dex faster and the catch right. sometiems i just have an animal in my head like for symposium mirage its kinda like a kangaroo when it looks really nice, like a nice even boucce where you just spring up - i also think of lynton stephens cause he was so good at that trick. but when i can put the move on auto pilot, and all those ideas are already remembered by my muscles, then i just have to think about how much effort i put in, and with something like a barfly, thats all you worry about, just making sure you actually complete the dexes early enough to land that clipper really solidly. so i like seeing players who are going fast, but you know they are fast with complete control, and the technique is so manifestly already there that they just concentrate on making sure they dont drop it which is why vaseks and phil morrisons (and to a lesser extent jims cause smetimes he looks like hes going to drop it any second, their games look so completed all the tiem that you are always surprised if they drop.
i think this is really a very subtle difference between some players styles.
5. agreed. trick selection in gerneal. like vasek looks really really really different during toe shuffle compared to doing p.s whirls and stepping sets
6 . body type and ankle flexibility. if you are really tall or really wide or if you have really long hair. all those things contribute, also the length of tshirt and shorts , like ryan in 98 verse when he started wearing the slightly longer shorts and seemed a bit more restricted. after he went to europe
cool post dave, thanks for geting me thinking

p.s its actually a typhoon in tokyo now which means i am unable to safely leave this house, and my friend suekichi hasnt come back yet, proably because the trains arent runnning. its like ! wow just had to tell some people

I'll get to that. But...
I am sick for the first time in like a year, and it sucks. I don't know how it came about, but its that kind of feeling like someone is grabbing your brain, like that headache you could point to. My body is like 50% weaker, I picked up a bottle of water and felt drained.
I'm drinking liquids like its going out of style. I have a lot of school shit I have to do tonight. I slept from 11 am - 3 pm. Epic.
Its weird though, you ever actually like being sick? Maybe I feel like its negativity coming out of me and I'll be better for it? Who knows.
I really wanted to jump head on into skooling for the nyfa jam but I don't see that happening. My body is beat.
Hope your day is going better.

Are you living in the dorms? I got sick much more frequently when I lived in the dorms.david wrote: I am sick for the first time in like a year, and it sucks. I went to bed freezing, wrapped up in all the blankets I had. I was shivering so hard. I haven't been that way in a while.
I woke up covered in sweat at 5 in the morning. I went back to sleep and woke up to my alarm. I was still covered in sweat. My hair felt so weird, it was all stuck together and stuff. I showered.
I took an economics test at 10. He picks a random essay. I got the one I didn't know. I probably failed it.
My throat hurts. My eyes itch. My body feels weak. My back is bothering me again. It hurts to swallow. It hurts to tighten my muscles.
Its hard to stay positive.

when you are having trouble staying positive and you're getting depressed becasue you're so used to the symptoms that it seems they'll never go away, just remember that you'll be better off after the sickness than you were before.david wrote: its hard to stay positive
even though being sick can be a serious pain in the ass, it can really help your mental state if you remember that this is trial, and when you are tough enough to beat it, your psyche will reward you for your bodies perseverance. Your immune system will be stronger and so will your willpower.
It may seem like no big deal to us now to survive a flu or even a cold but bear in mind that even 100 years ago people died from minor illness all the time. So even though to our brains, this is just a shitty part of every day life, to our bodies, this is a life and death struggle and there are always positive psychological effects that result from surviving, even if they aren't always apparent.
so cheer up, because you'll be better of mind and body when its gone.

Some tips:
1) I used to think you should play with a variety of bags. I have never decided on what is right, but now I just play with what I like and bring it to tournaments. I mean, yea you should be able to play with anything, but why bother not having fun with a light ass piece of shit bag. Like, Tony Hawk doesn't use k-mart boards to prove something.
2) Get nice white laces if you have dark shoes.
3) Make your hair long. Your style will get better. I'll cry when I have to cut mine.
4) Buy and watch Fourkast. It will teach you so much shit. Ricky, Lon, Penske. Ugh, its such a good like, fingerprint of freestyle at that time (right when I was a newb)
5) Watch every video twice.

Why do you think having long hair gives you a better style?
I really should buy Fourkast, the trailer is one of the videos I have seen the most.
See you in Prague
