Nov 4th, 2007

Hadn't had a session in a couple days. Came to the rather gross realization that if I don't play footbag, I don't tend to shower. :? Yet another reason to play as much as possible, right? I've just been working too hard lately. Looking at myself in the shower today, I feel like I've lost weight. That's an impressive feat considering where I was starting from. Need to be real careful this time of year, since it's getting cold out. Gotta force myself to eat more, eat healthy, and keep on exercising. Last thing I need is to get sick.

Got in a solo shred tonight, and I filmed it. Filmed the first half of the session from a low angle which included a lot of floor, and the second half of the session by perching the camera on a ledge. A casual glance at the footage showed that the second angle is much better. I'll keep that in mind if I shoot future sessions.

Overall it was a good session. I didn't feel too out of shape or out of practice, but my runs weren't that long. The worst aspect of the session was that the floor was a lot dustier, and consequently more slippery, than usual. I wiped my feet on a wet towel periodically which helped, but still I did not feel confident with spins. I mean, I normally don't spin much, but today I feel like I had an excuse.

Because I was filming, I made a point to try a bunch of stuff on camera that I'd never filmed before. I figured it would be useful to see how my form is on various sets/tricks. It was also good because I didn't get too hung up on any one concept. Actually, I did waste a good 10 minutes trying to hit whirlwalk. I had a few real close looks where I cleared the set, but I ended up doing a calf kick instead of a pdx whirl. Grrr...
I also "hit" a new trick: stepping tomahawk. I hit a few of them, but when I looked at them on the small LCD screen on the camera, the whirl looked thin. I'll check it out in the computer lab when school calms down next week.

Highlights:

*Uh...I guess I'll just show you when I make a video.

Yeah, the plan is to make a video with the raw footage. I might slap some music on it, but it won't be an edited video where I put effort into it. I just don't have the time. I'll throw some old footage on there too. Be forewarned, there's gonna be lots of tripod/static shots from the same angle, so it won't be that visually interesting. But hopefully some of the combos and runs will be entertaining. I really want to put a minimum of effort into making this.

Good night modified.

EDIT: after looking at my last session's highlights, I can't believe I totally forgot to try and get any gyro whirls on camera. D'oh! :x

Just plain exhausted. School's been kicking my ass. I think I get a small breather tonight though, and then it gets annoying again tomorrow. But I see a light at the end of the tunnel I think.

Footbag stuff.

Bad news: I've played a total of 1 time in the last 6 days. Given that I'm not injured, that's really bad. I'm starting to realize just how important footbag is to my health; footbag is my main way of de-stressing, it's my main form of exercise (volleyball once a week is a joke, I hardly break a sweat), and it's the main thing that leads to me taking showers. It's also gotten cold enough here that I am starting to wear long underwear. I saw the first snow flurries of the year today. All this makes getting to the gym to play a lot harder.

Oh, and I still haven't received Zeb's prize bags in the mail yet. I'm starting to worry they got lost?

Good news: the best piece of footbag news on my end, is that Rory got the remaining footage from me for a video, and it sounds like he can probably edit off of it. Stoked about that. Erik Chan is gonna stitch me a bag, which is also real exciting. I was also able to capture footage from my last session. I got some good combos, but more than anything it was good to see my form from a different angle. It helps me a lot. Even when tricks aren't "the," it still gives me an idea of how I can tighten things up. Oh, my suspicions about alpine bl. whirl being thin were confirmed: all 3 or 4 that i got on tape had thin whirls. I should be able to fix it though. I went to the video lab and arranged the clips on a timeline, and already put in slow-mos on certain tricks and combos. I just need to pick out a song and I'll put it out soon (I hope). It'll be minimal editing and mostly tripod footage, but it's better than nothing.

Put on my snow pants, exhumed my scarf, and braved the cold to go to the gym. I had a light solo session, where my sole goal was to play footbag. No combos, no tricks, no milestones. Just play footbag. This was a good plan, because even playing in long socks and long sleeve shirt, it was still cool enough that any extended rests between runs would have ended my session. Instead, I played pretty constantly throughout, never getting hung up on any single concept.

Highlights:

*toe set swirl, NOT symple. So my support leg stayed on the floor the whole time. A lot harder than it sounds. And a new trick.
*ducking butterfly x47, new personal best.
*ripwalk x20ish. Also a new personal best... I wish I had been counting.
*gyro whirl-pdx torque again.

So it can be kind of ambiguous about what side I mean. When I say "pixie WHAT!?", I mean like dimwalk symp rev swirling toe.
*stepping WHAT?! (Josh) (1). The jobs would be ripwalk symp rev swirl toe. This is a new trick for me.
*Stepping ss WHAT?! (Josh) (5?) I'd hit this before, but it had been a while.
SWEET!!!!!! Now if only you had gotten them on vid  Maybe when you get down here in December you can hit them again!!

Mega props Ken!

OK OK, I was just joking. :P In all seriousness, I like this challenge, but to make it more legit I should also probably eliminate ducking clipper, and strongside smear. I think the hardest part for me will be counting while playing, because that's never been natural to me. But maybe if I play with Luis, I can get him to count for me.

Josh: kicking in december sounds great. Man, I'd loooove to play outside again. As for the WHAT?! tricks, they weren't too hard for me, so I may get some on film this semester or over winter.

Don't take this the wrong way or anything, but the reason you have a last name in my post is to differentiate you from Zac Jackson, and possibly from Zach Jahner. But I'm happy that you are happy. :)

Got in a shred with Luis last night. I think it had been something like a week since we last played. It was good to play with somebody again. It paces me better, and I like getting excited when the other person hits something good. I also like being able to ask somebody to count my string length or give me an opinion if a trick is "the", etc.

I played real well yesterday. I started off by going for BOP-free strings, which was definitely a fun challenge. That said, it's a bit too easy/tempting for me to devolve to mindlessly easy shuffle... its a lot more fun to try and do weird links. My first run I didn't count, but I think was over 20. My second run had more 5s in it, and was between 15-17, but it was solid and felt more stylish.

Highlights:

*flip DSC! Hit it for my 2nd and 3rd times ever.
*Double spinning osis again.
*DSC-blur. This felt like a big milestone, because it means my DSC was controlled. In the sealing combo I also hit zooming mirage bsos, and ended with another DSC. 8)
*sumo-smoke
*pixie ss leg roll to clipper. I've started messing around with body rolls in homage to Jon. They are harder than you think.
*Double spinning eclipse! Very happy about this. Probably my best dexless trick to date.

As I was warming down, I took off my shoes and started stretching. But Luis was still playing, so I hopped back in to hit a couple barefoot tricks.

Barefoot highlights:

*enterrage.
*TATW!

That was a great note to end on. I just think its so cool that in footbag, even a 10 year vet like myself can improve. If you were to tell me 6 months ago that I'd have a session where I'd hit DSC at least twice on each side, DSE, and barefoot TATW, I don't know if I would have believed it. But that's footbag for you; even old farts can continue to improve.

20 minute solo session. Hardly enough time to warm up, but I did mess around with unusual stuff. Hit my first tootsie rolls ever, but they aren't as high on the calf as I'd like. They're like half tootsie rolls. I also figured out a cool new stall (new for me... I'm sure hackers have done it before) and hit it pixie ss, pixie opp, stepping, whirling ss, and pixie diving. I'll try and get it on film and put it in my throwaway vid.

Got in a solo session after volleyball practice today.

Highlights from 2 sessions ago that I forgot to mention:

*stepping grifter. Not new, but hadn't hit it in a couple years
*a run with tombstone bsos, bl. drifter bsos, a smoke, and a vertigo off the foot.

Highlights from today

*fairy ss dlo, new trick
*fairy ss drifter, new trick
*beta smog-torque. Hadn't done beta smog in a while
*my best tootsie roll to date.
*pdx drifter-same leg xbody squeeze-mechanosis style dlo to a run

By "same leg xbody squeeze" I mean that trick that Jon often does after flapper stall. That was also a new trick for me today. It's cool... you have to put the bag at a very different spot than most tricks.

Random thoughts as I take a break from my paper (legal aspects of Common Interest Developments...thrilling  )

1. Glaucoma is a terrible name for a footbag trick. No trick should be named after a disease. I think I'm also particularly offended because I am a prime candidate to develop premature glaucoma (according to my doctors). It's seriously fucked up to name a trick after a disease; how would you like it if somebody was like "I just hit breast cancer" and your mom just died of it? Fuck that shit; I'm calling it fairy ss dlo. :?

2. KY is indeed a great term. The media used it a lot to describe the last Prime Minister, Abe Shinzo. I use it in conversation with my mom when we want to point out a socially awkward/offensive statement without other people understanding us.

3. School is really killing me footbag-wise. I missed the NYFA tourney this weekend because of papers and projects, which really hurt because I am OG NYFA. NYFA got me into footbag, and it will always be my family. Before this weekend, there had only been one footbag tourney ever held in NYC, and that was the Explosion. That was the first time I ever saw footbag. Going to the 2nd ever NYC tourney would have been like coming full circle.

On the same note, even though I was able to throw a tourney at Cornell this semester, I had to work so hard at school in the weeks leading up to it that by the time of the event I was sleep-deprived, out of shape, and out of practice. I played a total of one hour the first night, and one hour on the last day. At my own damn tournament.

Hopefully I'll get a good job when this is all done, and I'll be able to get back into a more comfortable footbag groove again. We'll see.

4. I'm officially going to be in Washington, DC next semester. Just throwing that out there. So if you live near Ithaca, you only have another month or so to come play with me (I'm looking at you Chris Dean, and Binghamton shredders). And on the flip of that, if you live near DC, look me up starting at the end of January.
