On the topic of what shoes he's wearing. From what I remember of seeing the video, I think he's wearing bowling shoes. I know this sounds kind of silly but bowling shoes have leather on that part of the sole, which may be nice for sole stalls.

I just tried the bowling shoe thing. I was able to hit one mildly successful sole osis after a few minutes. So maybe bowling shoes are the key
