Speaking of hot sauce...oh man...
Last night I decided to make a quick chicken and cheese wrap. I saw my stepdad's hot sauces sitting in the fridge. I thought I was in a hot mood. I thought Dumbass Hot Sauce looked like some stupid, WEAK sauce that I could handle (I like hot, but not to the point that I can't taste my food). I shook the bottle up and down the burrito shell 2 or 3 times. Took a bite...Whew! That was warm. Another bite. Wow. Another. CAN NOT TASTE OR FEEL A THING IN MY MOUTH! I threw the rest away. I was burning up. Chugged a glass of milk. The burn came back after like 2 seconds of that. Then I ate a bowl of cereal. The burn came back after that.
So I wake up in the morning, go to an appointment, go to work, and I am feeling all funny inside. I felt like I was going to have diarrhea. I've been getting sickness signs for a few days now, so I thought maybe I was really getting sick.
I just got done telling this story to my stepdad, and he was laughing and asking if I felt like I wanted icecream. I caught on and was like, "Oh yeah!" I forgot that happens when you eat hot stuff. So yeah, the sauce was why I felt funny all day. And it turns out that my stepdad calls that dumbass sauce the hottest stuff he's had, and he's tried his shares of sauce.
I'm kinda proud of myself. Hehe.

At a graduation party my friend thought it was funny to put daves insanity sauce on his hand and put it on peoples faces (it would burn like crazy). Everyone got pissed at him and before we could think of how to get back he went to the bathroom to pee. Needless to say, it doesn't come off your hands and he forgot all about it. I was actually having a discussion about this topic at work, and somebody pointed out that a number of the things people have mentioned, that we didn't think meet the definition of "condiments" are sold in packaging in the US, such that they could be considered condiments, so it's a cultural thing, rather than people not knowing what condiments are (although there are still a couple I'm dubious of).
Anyway my favourite condiment is probably the "home made" chilli sauce you get at asian take away places. It obviously varies from place to place, but I guess resembles Sriracha. There is a local Cambodian fast food place which is probably the only place I buy take away dinners from, and their chilli sauce is awesome. Also a food van at the market has great chilli sauce.
I guess maybe because both my parents made most of the food we ate at home, including condiments, I don't have much of a taste for manufactured food.
I also don't understand the infatuation some people have with hot sauces, and this idea that the hotter a sauce the better. I wonder if those people also eat raw sugar or salt by themselves. Flavours that over power a meal are never good - it should be about reaching the right combination of flavours.
Anyway those people might enjoy this website;

Yeah - enhance the flavour. Most dictionaries would also specify that a condiment is savoury, and not a seasoning or spice.Sporatical_Distractions wrote:I'll reiterate the dictionary definition from the previous page:Jeremy wrote:I was actually having a discussion about this topic at work, and somebody pointed out that a number of the things people have mentioned, that we didn't think meet the definition of "condiments" are sold in packaging in the US, such that they could be considered condiments, so it's a cultural thing, rather than people not knowing what condiments are (although there are still a couple I'm dubious of).

wikipedia wrote:A condiment is a prepared food, often preserved or fermented, that is added in variable quantities, most often at the table, to the diner's taste.[1]
Although sometimes considered a condiment, salt is more strictly a seasoning than a condiment, as it has not been prepared.
Condiments may be served on the side or as a garnish, for example Sauerkraut may be used as a bed for Schweinshaxen (pork knuckles), or may be added as a topping to a hot dog. When served separately, the amount is usually at the diner's discretion, however condiments may be added prior to serving.
Some condiments may also be used during cooking to add flavour or texture.
Condiments are usually sauces used to enhance the flavor of other foods and not normally eaten on their own. For convenience, many condiments are provided in single-serving packets.

The full Merriam dictionary definition wrote:something used to enhance the flavor of food; especially : a pungent seasoning
Things like guacamole, honey, peanut butter, nutella, cheese, etc. seem to be very much pushing the boundaries of what a condiment is. If you look at typical condiments like mustard or tomato sauce, condiments are things that aren't an important part of the meal. If you had dry bread without any spread on it, or put a spread on it; that's a pretty dramatic difference. In fact it's not typical for people to eat dry bread. On the other hand, many people eat their ham sandwiches without any mustard in them. Condiments are also not sustaining. You don't eat add them to a meal for the sustenance or nutritional value, you add them specifically for the flavour and if we return again to the full version of your definition, we're talking about strong savoury flavours.

umm...what? not a close comparison what so ever. Just because you can eat an avocado means nothing for guacamole not being a condiment. you can eat chili peppers too, but hot sauce is the condiment.Jeremy wrote: Guacamole; not used as flavouring. As much of a condiment as a salad is a condiment.
i'm just arguing because I love guacamole
