The wikipedia tricklist project

Post by Psilocybe »

Hello everyone.

I updated the wikipedia freestyle page with the newest world champions.

Frankly I'm tired of the trick list here. Its outdated, incomplete, and we can't add anything to it. With a wiki anyone can toss in trick somebody else has forgot.

EDIT:

We are now on wikispaces!

I have added and formatted many of the 3+add moves from the tricklist here, but somebody should add the <3 add moves found on footbag.org and others. If somebody could help with formatting that would be great. Lets have a set section too. (We might want to order by add?)

Heres to the most complete trick list ever!

Fill me up!

Better link it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freestyle_footbag where jobs is explained and note on the discussion page that it is a growing community effort.

it's been deleted.

Must have been an incredible piece of journalism.

Wikipedia is NOT friendly to first person information.
Footbag tricks are just a bunch of stuff we made up.
The editors won't know jobs notation, and they won't
know the difference between blurry whirl and tsunami
death combo.

Wikipedia likes references etc.

Wikipedia is not the idea location for a list of footbag moves.

This is bullshit. I'll try tacking it on to the front freestyle page then. Its not like anyone goes there.

If THAT doesn't work, I'll start our own wiki.

Ha.ha.hahahah! I'm going crazy.

I wrote a little C program to parse our movelist here and make it wikipedia formattable.

Our movelist is now up! (for how long...who knows)

If somebody could find better pictures for the stalls than a friggin stick figure that would be fabulous.

I don't think we want/need a trick list on wikipedia. Wikipedia is a good way for people who don't know footbag to learn about the sport, and where to go to get better info. Flooding them with trick names is information overload, and won't help them learn about the sport. If they want to learn more about footbag, there are other sources they can go to. Putting a list of tricks on wikipedia just opens it up to vandalism, and makes the sport look less professional.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm and intentions of this idea, I don't think it's the right use of time or energy.

I kind of agree with Ken but I also think a wiki trick list might be really useful for spreading the sport if it is better organised than the footbag.org or modified lists and there are multimedia links.

Sorting by add level would make a more useful list than alphabetizing moves and I think the list should emphasize basic and intermediate difficulty, not cutting edge concepts or unusual moves that I have seen on video once. I mean, when you look for butterfly in the list, you get buttersole. Instead of whirl, whirlwalk. Instead of clipper, clownface. The barrage of bizarre names definitely looks unprofessional.

Whether or not Wikipedia is the best place to store it, a wiki format is a good idea. Anybody can edit it, without waiting for an official approver to get to it & update their site.

Okay, okay. I know a wiki trick list is the way to go, but yes I agree that wikipedia isn't the best place for it. (Even though nobody goes there)

I'll look into starting our own wiki. Its not hard at all.

I'm...not...sure. When you said that, I thought I recalled seeing it, but upon looking again I couldn't find anything. And surely its not anywhere near their moves section.

The first thing I see there is:
We have integrated their "move database" here and will be making improvements over time (so check what's new for updates). Last updated January 17, 2004. 303 moves on file.

If Steve Goldberg happened to read this thread, he would rip off the creator's head and then puke inside his throat.

Use the freestyle wiki on footbag.org. Its under "reference."

wtf...? That was rude. Theres the last fucking time I try to help the footbag community. Fuck you guys. I don't even know who Steve is nor do I care. Tell him to fix his lame site while you're at it. footbag.org is huge joke.

By the looks of it Ken, Dat, Frank, ted AND Tsiangkun didn't know about their wiki which is a testament to how much of a fucking waste of bandwidth the site truly is. So no I'm not going to check out their stupid wiki. My motivation for footbag is dead. Congrats.

Nooooo!

You have to funnel this passion into further productivity, you can't just collapse!

Steve Goldberg is a massive supporter of footbag both with his brains/experience and with his money, so he isn't someone wasting anyone's time.

You should be happy that someone has laid out the groundwork in a nice logical central location like the main worldwide footbag website and allowed anyone to add to it.

And you're right, it does seem like those people didn't know either, so don't take Mirken's post so hard. He just words stuff crazy strong to make points sometimes.

I bet if all this was happening face to face no one would be blowing up.

Footbag! :)

Face to face. ha. I've only met ONE other footbagger and thats the way its probably gonna stay. Like it matters. Brad Robinson is the only other footbagger within a 50 mile radius of me, even though I attend a "liberal" uni with 30000+ kids. And within maybe 70 miles, the only other potential player is Risdin and hes long past done. Now I know why he quit. I'm sorry but I'm not driving 5 hours to chicago to hurt myself and play some fucking footbag with strangers. I've sprained my ankle, i've nearly knocked out my front tooth, and I've given myself a massive stress fracture, not to mention the constant shin splints and foot pain. So, footbag is dead to me, always has been I suppose. Ive been unable to play for the last 4 months. This really doesn't help. Theres no way in hell i'm gonna add to footbag.orgs wiki. I'm embarrassed to even refer interested people to that site, because I know it will repel them immediately. Seeing as how its precious wiki tricklist is still NONEXISTENT, you guys can feel free to add to it. I've obviously laid down some foundation. Good night and good riddance.

Given the last two posts of yours in this topic, can't say I'm going to miss you from our sport.

For the record, many of the last world championships have been run because of the work of Steve, and a number of the sports top players, like David Clavens, Vasek and the rest of the Czech crew received significant help from Steve (not that they wouldn't have still been champions I'm sure, but Steve certainly helped them a great deal).

Not forgetting all the countless players like myself, who discovered the sport of footbag through footbag.org.

The problem with footbag.org is that it's built based around user input, and the footbag community is so segmented that people put their stuff and have their discussions else where, instead of there.

In any event, while trick lists were very important to me when I was starting (like a number of players, I printed out the list from .org and would carry it around with me and try to learn new moves when ever I could), I really don't care much about trick lists any more. I can figure out tricks on my own pretty well, and I don't care if people have hit a move before or not.

So if all you can do is attack people like Steve, who is probably the most important person in the development of footbag, I think it would be best if you went back to your mind altering drugs and didn't concern yourself with the direction of the sport of footbag.

Oh boohoo. Its nice that you completely ignore Senor's unprovoked statement. Oh, wait, it was just a joke, eh? How am I supposed to gather that, based on his post count? Whoopdeedoo. It was completely uncalled for and I still don't know why he said it. So excuse me for getting peeved. He attacked ME and I'm attacking a friggin website. A website! And now you're insulting me personally as well because of my alias. Thats rich, considering all the top level players here that are potheads. Go insult them too while you're at it.

Steve isn't even involved in this thread so how can I be hurting his feelings? Based my first posts, I was in a happy optimistic mood before this. Whether or not a tricklist is useful to people who have been playing 4+ years is irrelevant to me. The fact remains that footbag.orgs list is a joke, their wiki list doesnt even have any entries, and the list here hasn't been changed in years as well. This leads me to believe that either the sport isn't progressing, or people are being lazy.
