Stitching more evenly means that
instead of having, say,
one stitch as, like, 3cm, or whatever, and the next 4cm, and the last 2.5cm, to stitch every stitch 3cm (completely made up lengths). If every stitch is the same length, it will show noticeably on the finished product.
And as for
how to stitch evenly, it helps to create some sort of measuring aid, like, for instance, a ruled mini template or mini ruler, or something, to either use as a eyeballing reference or to mark dots (like "connect-the-dots" for your stitches). Once you've done this for a bit -- if you're having difficulties with consistency -- then you can kind of just keep in mind a mental image of your preferred stitch length, and if you find you're having troubles, just refer to your tool again.
