I bet we have if you know these guys! I used to be rail-thin and way into industrial music in the 90's.Rieferman wrote:Woah... Dolercoaster, JP, ****AND**** Dank? That's amazing. Wish I'd gone!
After seeing a picture of you, I think we've met actually. Pretty sure of it. Nice write ups and pictures!
Kicked with Jake and Matt today. Matt is talented. I hit another atomic dyno and some solid strings/combos. Ducking far swirls were looking good. We've been kicking with a bag that I don't feel strongly about. I've been hand-braking in some of mine but they are not there yet. Once I get my Clavens bag back from the shop things will feel back to normal.
On another note, I was just offered a freelance gig making ambient music for a project through a division of CMU. That's nice.
Brian, if you see this: thank you so much for buying one of our shirts! It means a lot to us. It was great getting to talk which-choo at the pub.
Things are looking really good.
Jake, Matt and I kicked in Oakland today. The air sucked. I have absolutely no idea if I am going to be able to kick at all this winter. I might just put it off completely, barring the chance of unseasonable weather, run, sit-up, lift weights and do pushups. It might help to rest my body anyway.
Highlights:
Far symposium reverse whirl bsos. B2B is still very hard to control.
Stomping far reverse whirling swirl. Improvised off of bad footing. Both dexes were clean. That's what I love. It's like music when creativity meets technique mid-string like that. Especially since I never hit reverse whirling swirl on that side before. I probably followed through with it with conviction after reading DC's post on butterfly swirls and how both dexes should be thought of as going at the same time, and since reverse swirls are similar to butterflies and the bag was straight up... well it worked. Felt like Mcguyver hitting something like this out of nowhere. And, for someone that wanted to Rhyme under the name MC Guyver, that is a fulfilling, almost spiritual level of satisfaction.
Several bad side whirls. But, only until my stepping set woke up...
Yeah I was getting really frustrated trying to hit Stepping dyno and then I started to hit very low, uptime whirls...? I am saving this file somewhere in my head that it won't be lost.
My paradon is about 1/3 again. Meanwhile my atomics seem better than 2/3. There is some confusion between these two motions. I will need to figure out some plan of action and stick with it. Too much to go into but I think I know what I need to do.
Thought a lot about some Jorden tips on endurance: head positioning, focus as though meditating, circular motions, and breathing out through my mouth. Forgot completely about the direction my palms were facing. Regardless, it helped.
I'm in a bad mood. The weekend went by way too fast and the footbag season is coming to a very real end. So, Jake can tell you all about his cool-ass shit and Matt's never-ending progress if he feels like it.
Pasta. Don't mind if I do.

I liked the bit about music and technique too, you put it well.
Ian, you better not chill for the winter, if for no other reason than you're hitting strings like this.
Besides, if we play there when people are walking in and out of the building I think the air will improve with airflow from the outside. And once they get some superhero to fly up and replace the light bulbs, we might even be able to see the footbag while we play.
As for me, today was an OK day. I hit diving whirl, that was cool. And I hit a flip tomahawk and caught it for some reason instead of sealing it. I also hit atomic style reverse drifter>pdx mirage>flux. That was cool too. I wish I could say >repeat cause that would be f*cking rad, but alas, such was not the case.
Matt hit fog today, and bedwetter, and his pixie game is killer. We need to get caleb to hop out of the woodwork and shred with us so he and matt can compare notes on toe game.

Ah, I miss the 412, haha.
Sounds like the foot bag scene up there is pretty sick, way better than down here. I'm hoping to get up there next summer to visit friends and family and chill out in Ligonier (Family owns the Sir Pizza that opened up i the last year out in Wexford. I think thats where it is at least).

Yep. It came. It's nice too. We haven't kicked with it yet though. The blue one you sold me was incredible but was misplaced(!?!!!!).
Tonight I am going to try and get some footbag in by my lonesome. I am a bit concerned about how to do this and pace it over two hours, as I tend to lose my breathe so fast, but I'm gonna try. It's that or get fat, and I just discovered cheap Indian across from my job today...

So I met with my Buddy Konrad who is really cool and we worked on the idea for a comic book. I managed to fit some mandatory footbagging in during a brainstorming session. Anyway, I had a very unusual session as a result and recorded some of it. It is very much a response to Jake's "this". I'm gonna take this time, a day or so early, to express my thanks for having such a great friend to kick with. It's some of the best strings I can remember (barely, as I was in the middle of a conversation the whole time...?) doing. So, thanks Jake. : )

You didn't specifically ask for advice, so if you don't want any, please ignore me.
I think your tricks look good. You have some nice varied concepts and looks like the bops are solid. My only advice right now would be in the area of control. You're moving around a ton, chasing the bag a little it seems like. I'm willing to bet that if you concentrate on the concept of "set the bag up and down, move around the bag [vs. the bag moving around you]" you'll see rapid improvement in a lot of areas. It's really a lot easier to hit stuff if you don't have to go get the bag and recover after each trick.
But, like I say, I enjoyed the last two vids a lot. Keep up the good work! Hope my comments are taken as they're intended - to be helpful. I hope to play with you when I'm up in your area around X-Mas

where the hell is that spot? it loooks soooo dope.
Thanks Dave, I particularly liked the last run in the second video, though both really struck me after completion. The spot is at Posvar Hall at Pitt.
Glad your okay too.
Alright. I was going to do this but stopped at one item (Jake). Then Ken went ahead and did it so I'm gonna do it too, in a paraphrased sort of manner.
Within the world of Footbag, which has brought me some of my closest friends and greatest joy, there is a lot that I have to be thankful for. This year has been particularly incredible for me.
I would like to express specific thanks to Ken and Barrett and the tournaments that they ran for all of our benefit. Ken has gone from this really cool guy that was into the Blues Explosion to one of my very favorite international men of mystery (envelope-pushing footbag players). He has not stopped being the shit. And he threw an awesome Jam, which attending proved to be my greatest overcome footbag challenge of the year, was incredible, and continues to serve as a reference point today. Reading his blog after putting my lavers aside for a few years reminded me what this sport was and how much it meant to me. Now I simply read it because there is no other option.
Barrett did something that I did not think would happen so soon nor with such great execution. He put together an incredible experience in the very space that I learned Footbag, Washington Square Park. Now I have the privilege of seeing non-attendees of the event wearing shirts that I designed for the event. As an artist that is a great award.
Also want to thank Bruce for keeping NYFA alive all of these years. And for putting us up, and the trophies. And for giving the street name near your apt. rabbit ears. In fact, especially for that. I'm still laughing.
And to David Clavens. Because Jake and I accosted our friends and made them watch several videos of his last night. Because he is the man. Teaching everyone how things should be done, setting the standard, giving instruction, making the bags, and taking no prisoners.
And Nathan Pipenberg for all of his great bags that have helped SCF so much!
And Matt. Reminding Jake and I how lazy we really are. And for being the man. Matt is really good at footbag.

Multiple whirls on bad side completed in the uptime. Not the way I want them done, as they won't be as easy to build on as downtime whirls, but good enough for now. Paradox whirl is getting closer on both sides.
Paradon was behaving today. Bag weight was the problem I think.
Atomsmasher b2b, twice in a row. 2/2 for the day. Didn't shred long enough to do it more.
Flux-far reverse symposium whirl. Non symposium combo on the other side.
Ripwalk-ripwalk-pm, long string afterwards. Things are looking good.
Dynos are looking good again as well.

Matt gets credit for today's quote of the session:
"No one leaves until someone ducks an atomic set."
Matt also gets credit for hitting a solid alpine atomsmasher so that we could all go home.
I had a number of alpine legbeaters bounce off of my foot, and Ian cleared his head with the set a number of times and gave Matt and I a number of good insights into how to hit what we were trying. It was fun and my hip will not be happy with me tomorrow.
In other news, the students are back so we can't play in our normal spot as easily. So instead we headed up to the top floor of this building where there are all these crazy vents and boiler kinds of doohickies everywhere. It's got this great industrial feeling, like we're playing footbag in a steel mill or something. It is questionable as to whether or not we're allowed to be there, since most of the doors to it are locked, but there are no signs and I figure it's much easier to apologize than to ask permission, right? Besides, it really is a sweet shred spot.

Kicked with Jake and Matt in our, well there's only rule about our new spot...
Jake dropped a pretty amazing trick like 77 times.
Matt hit some enormous combos. Oh yeah, and alpine atomsmasher
What did I hit again?
Oh yeah: some nice stuff. Paradon and atomic sets were both behaving today. Even hippy atomic sets. Stepping sets were on too. Even torque felt nice. Dyno needs to wake up. Bears hibernate. Not Dynos. Left dyno was nice. Nice and inconsistant. Right side dyno was just dumb. Dumb enough for a few b2b's. Dumb enough to be schooled heavily. Thinking long drills of only paradon, paradox mirage and dynos. That's gonna be some weird stuff!
Ripwalk to blur was a big deal for me today. I was sitting there (btw, I am watching Eragon right now, and fuck if I can't remember who I was talking to about this, and how John Malcovich stands out like a sore thumb... I think it was a footbag player...?) and watching Jake kick, and waiting for my pass, when I realized that I need to overcome the stepping set. I just pansy out when I do this trick. So... I spent aprx. 30 seconds isolating the unique components in my head, thought of them like the were a melody, and executed them like I was playing a riff on the most awkward, high-action, imaginary instrument in the world. First try into a string. It was nice. Perhaps I will approach footbag as an instrument for a bit.
I hope that I get to see some of this footage from Jake's camera soon. I think I hit a new best string. Sweet.

I've been sick all week and it sucks. I feel so much better today and was able to kick because of it, but I feel like I need a vacation before I go back to work tomorrow.

rev.whirl-infinity-rev.whirl-infinity...rev.whirl-infinity-rev.whirl-pm-infinity-simp.swirl-simple rev. swirl. This string made me happy. Guiltless and with few bops.
Atomic sets and paradons were good today.
I'm very close to hitting paradon swirl on one side.
Most importantly, I understand whirl a lot better now on my off side, and as a result, on both sides. I hit about three whirls on it today and they were the cleanest ones on that side yet.
I'm bored of being sick. I'm not bored of indian food.
