I was wondering if anyone was going to be having any tournies in New England (preferably Massachusetts

). I want to go to tournies but i cant get a ride anywhere far away (far away=past MA/NY border).

Hey man.. Check out the newly stickified post in this section of the forum (called "A guide to running your own event" or something similar).. You can run your own event!

Seriously.. Run something.. It's the best way to get your area hopping with freestyle energy.. That's how the Philly scene started out, and we're huge now..

The question ought not be "Who's gonna run xyz?" but rather should be "Who would come to my xyz if I put it on?"

I'd definitely come. Springfield Mass isn't a trip I'd make just any old time, but well worth the trip for a tournament or jam of fair size.

And New England does NEED a tournament...

I've got a good friend half-way between me and you, a bad-ass shredder, who'd probably be there to, though I won't name him since I've got no right to speak for him.

And there's a decent scene in Boston who also really need a comp. near to them to get out to.

It might not take too much convincing to get some of those serious shredders from Montreal down to Mass, and I believe Brian McKenzie will be going to grad school in Albany this year...

I'd come to an event in massachussetts, and if the timing was good, I could bring a bunch of newbies from the Rome area who are itching to play some good footbag. Maybe some RFA members as well, if they're up for the trip. Plan something; I've been known to be a real troop-rallier for these kinds of things in the past

There's a slight problem...i SUCK at footbag so i dunno if id want to hold one if i'm bad at the sport. I'm 13 (14 when i'd want it to be held) so i cant drive anywhere. Be besides that fact, I could get a venue no sweat, t-shirts are no prob, lodging could be difficult for me to find at decent rates but available.

Hey man, don't worry about your skills or your age... I have not ever held (and will never hold) an event where I'm the best player in attendance.. That's the cool thing.. You hold something, and players come to you.. Sure you have to organize the thing, but you get to stay home in your comfy bed and in your own town, and all the players head your way!!

I say, "go for it". Just start small and hold something simple and see what happens.

if i did hold one itd most likely be next year between April-August. And it would, of course, be a hangout one, events just for fun (ie. no prize money, no comps where u have to pay, etc)

I'm actaully planning on visiting friends at Smith collage (time yet determined) and i would definatly plan it around a tourney if a date is solidified.....
for personal convenience i would vote for Northampton, MA

id have it in chicopee (my city, a suburb of springfield) because i could get a free/low-cost venue. Northhampton isnt too far away (30-45 mins away)

yeah, someone should definitely hold a tournament in New England. It seems like there are enough kickers in the area to justify at least a smal tourney. I live in Albany, NY and would definitely go to a tourney in Mass, assuming it does not conflict with school. I recently tore some ligaments in my right ankle, so I have to stay off of it for at least a couple months, but I should be back kicking and tearing more ligaments after that. Kickers in Boston, let me know if you want to kick some time this fall. The grad student union at my school sponsors a bunch of cheap day and weekend trips to different cities in the region, and I think Boston is one of them this fall, so I'll be in town at some point.

It would be great if "Footbagging Frog" were to come back more interest in doing it. Mass. has been too long without an events or freestylers of note.

Hmm, I was searching for old funtasktick threads and came across this one!

I would have been really excited if this thread wasn't so dead. But I can feel the mass area slowly springing up. I'm always on the lookout for people in my area so I've been noticing this. Peter/slapdash from Boston recently had a shred with several guys which I think is really cool.

IT WOULDNT BE A BAD IDEA IF SOMEONE STARTED SOMETHING IN MASS. All jams start off small.

in case anyone is curious, Boston (and hopefully all of MA) is finally trying to catch up with everywhere else...i had pretty much given up on finding any footbaggers around, having tried to contact people on the footbag.org listing to no avail, but then months later a guy called me (whose skill level is very close to my own, though more toe based than i am, so we learn from each other) and we started to get together every once in awhile, then i heard about another guy who was active after quitting for a couple years, and started kicking with him too! and i am starting to try to get some of my hacky slacking friends to develop some...but yeah, the best thing was last friday was probably the biggest grouping of legit and dedicated footbaggers in boston in a long, long time, so i am really stoked about it! but, long story short, MA is indeed in need of more representation!

HOST A JAM!

Decide on a time when all the locals can show up to play, commit to it, invite out-of-towners and promise them (me) a place to crash for a night or two, and they (me) will come.

Another thing that you could do to help the Boston footbag scene is to start a web-site. In New York City we have a web-site that we use to help us plan our regular weekly sessions. Its not really even a full-fledged web-site. Its a just a ready-made Yahoo-Groups site.

The best part about it is that you can post a message to the group and it gets sent as an e-mail to everybody else in the group that has requested that messages be sent to them. You can even post a message to the group by e-mail. I almost never even go to that site. We simply send a few e-mails through the site every week to decide when and where to play on the upcoming weekend. Its really simple:
Bruce will send a message: "Who's down with kicking at Union Square this Saturday at 2:00 pm?"
A few people will respond with: "I can make that," or "Saturday is no good for me, how about Sunday?" And pretty soon we've got a plan. Then, as new people join the local kicking scene, just direct them to the web-site so that they can keep up with the when, where, and who are playing.
In New York City we've been having one of our best summers ever, with alot of participation just about every weekend. The web-site is a big part of that.
One other benefit of the site is that its free.

Of course, you'd certainly want to announce a jam on this forum too, and perhaps on footbag.org as well. Maybe even use the footbag.org data-base of members, and spend some time looking up other kickers in Boston/Mass and let them all know about your efforts to get the Boston/Mass footbag scene more active. Tell them about your Jam. Here in New Jersey, actually, we've had a once-a-month jam, and we put the word out about a week before, and people from New York City and Philly come out, as well as the locals. Its almost always on the Last Sunday of the Month, so after a while everybody knows to expect it, and will simply plan on coming even before they've heard from us. You might try setting up a regular thing like that too (last Sunday of each month, or some other regular recurring date).
