You don't eat add them to a meal for the sustenance or nutritional value, you add them specifically for the flavour and if we return again to the full version of your definition, we're talking about strong savoury flavours.
i think it all depends on personal definition. i dont think mustard, ketchup, or mayonnaise are "savoury". the definition of condiment doesnt say "savoury". it doesnt say itll make it taste good. anything put on food to change the taste is a condiment to me. this includes things i like and dont like. and it definately doesnt have anything to do with america's packaging.

ps. is it too early for steve irwin jokes? cause ive got a good one.

You are, of course, free to define words however you want. If you think things like guacamole or honey are condiments, or you use them as condiments then nobody is going to physically stop you. Words are obviously symbols for meaning, and they are only useful if everybody associates the same meaning to those words.

As I said earlier, there is obviously a cultural difference here, in that products like guacamole and cheese are sold differently in the US than in Australia.

Something being a condiment or not being a condiment has nothing to do with if it's quality. I love guacamole, and anything with avocado in it. I just have never eaten it, or seen it eaten, in a manner that would make me call it a condiment. In no way is the guacamole that I eat preserved, and it's not used as a flavouring, neither is it a pungent seasoning.

Honey has not been prepared in anyway, how you eat it is exactly as it was formed in nature. Of course we can get into a debate about the word "prepared," and change the definition of "prepared" until it's meaningless and applies to anything, but if we try to stay away from debates like that, I think it's definitely not a condiment.
Just because you can eat an avocado means nothing for guacamole not being a condiment. you can eat chili peppers too, but hot sauce is the condiment.
Good strawman. I never claimed that eating avocado had anything to do with whether guacamole is a condiment or not. My point was that guacamole (in my experience) is mixed together out of fresh ingredients - not preserved (and my comment about cultural differences was that I've been told that in the US you can buy guacamole at the supermarket in jars with preserving agents in it), and that it's not used as a flavouring agent, but as a sustaining part of a meal; like the lettuce, tomato etc. that you also put in a Burrito. It's not something you put into a meal just for the flavour.

2) WASsAAAAABiiii
3) Ketchup + Vinegar + Hotsauce on my fries.. combo condiment!

I make my own Hotsauce made of Jalapenos and Habaneros. BURN BURN BURN! .. I tell my friends that its a sweet dipping sauce with green coloring for tortilla chips .. I love watching their reaction after taking one chip with a whole lot of sauce! PRANKS ON UR FRIENDS FTW!

you can make unpreserved ketchup and that's still a condiment.

It's strange to me that you've never eaten guacamole as a condiment, like in burritos for instance. The best place imagineable to place the beloved guac. crazy aussies :)

In burritos it's clearly not a condiment. Are the other things you put in a burrito condiments?

I'm not entirely sure what ketchup is, since that's an American word, and in Australia it is only used in application to standard tomato sauce; which is obviously a preserve. I've never heard of tomato sauce that cannot be bottled and kept for a long time while in an airtight container.

But that's only put in for flavour; guacamole, lettuce, tomato, beans, cheese etc. are the actual food that is part of a burrito. They're not flavouring, they're actually the parts of the meal.

Honey: the condiment of choice

"So lets get this right.... a condiment flavors food to increase enjoyment, and honey is a sweet substance used for food, so adding honey to food sweetens the flavor and increases my enjoyment!"

"Honey lovers alike, and those who are just now discovering the wonders of honey as a condiment..."

and here's a museum of honey condiment packets

Well if Ask Jeeves says it, it must be right

I agree that things in packets like that are usually condiments, and it goes back to what I was saying before about cultural differences.

You can get guacamole like that in australia too.

I couldn't choose my favourite condiments.... really depends on what you're eating but I suppose overall I could say:

1 Garlic
2 Chilli

I love really hot food. I see what you mean about overpowering but sometimes it's good as just to have a SUPER hot meal :D

Yeah after some debate on this topic with some other people, I concede that guacamole is used as a condiment at times, and thus can be called a condiment.

Re "LEGOMAN's" comment, how can you possibly have a "serious discussion" about what a condiment is? I would also say that discussion is far more interesting than your idea of "good opinions" which were just lists of 3 "condiments."

You may lack the intellect to participate in any kind of communication beyond writing lists of things, but many people on this forum manage quite easily. Note how civil Kevin and I were. Unlike you, who felt the need to attack me in a private message, as well as writing your insinuatingly negative post, everybody else either managed to participate in the discussion, or ignore it and post their own lists.

If you lack the ability to not read posts that are not lists of 3 things, perhaps you should see a psychologist or something, because that sounds like a real problem for you.

I've actually never heard of guacamole being used as anything but a condiment. I should try that. I have heard of salsa picante being eaten as a salad (by me).
