Tom and I went to do gymnastics last night. It was awesome. I hope it becomes something we do regularly.
Thanks for taking care of that Pengpeng. And sorry for not getting them out earlier Josh, my bad.

The gymnastics that Peng referred to is something that is sparking up old passion for flying and flipping and it has me very excited!!

We went out to our first of these sessions that this nice guy named Allen Keng throws at a small gymnastics facility in North York (a bit north of Toronto) every monday and friday nights. They are run for people of all levels and the crowd was a big mix from pretty newbish people like Peng and me to crazy flipping ninjas. Here is a video of Team Ryouko, which Allen is a member of, doing their thing.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=O_MYX8UM9qw

At the sessions Peng and I go to only sooome of the people are this crazy and everyone is nice and kinda like footbag people in that they like to put time and effort into learning wierdo skills that don't really pay the bills. hehe, I like those kind of people though, I would say that they are my favorite for sure. Basically all footbag people are this kind of person, totally genuine.

In footbag and gymnastics and chess and fucking whatever takes skill all the people are totally real with you about their commitment to the sport as evidenced by the fact that they took the time to put in the effort and thought required to get good at whatever the thing is. I love that there are no posers in footbag because you actually have to invest the time to have the skills so it keeps it all so real.

So the gymnastics stuff was a lot of fun! I have now gone and learned tons about what I appear to be getting into, they call it 'tricking'. Sweet!

I don't know if I've mentioned it here before but for years I have had one recurring dream theme. Of all things, I have dreams about standing back tucks. Frigging backflips! In all different situations, sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't. So last friday at the class after we'd done the lengthy warm up and stretch stuff we were let loose. One guy asked Allen if they could resume the back tuck lesson they'd started the week prior and me and a big-ish group went and did all the lead up learning parts.

I liked how Allen taught, it was similar to how we teach footbag. Instead of just telling someone to just try and do a back flip he had us all go through the various parts of the trick. It was like, jump up tuck and land on back on this big block thing to practice the set, then crouching on the block and rolling off backwards down to your feet, which lead to doing that from standing with more momentum. Then the block was turned so that we'd do the set>tuck>land on back on the block>roll back right away down to feet.

I saw the people doing the next level, the level I will be doing this Friday... so stoked!! I have been studying sooooo many videos on youtube about proper form and I learned lots of REALLY cool physics stuff about gaining maximum height and so many cool things that I can't wait to try out!!

I am sooo glad that Peng found out about this because it's something I really wanted to be doing so I am glad she found just the right scene and vibe to help us learn this fun stuff. Also, it's great that we have a weekly guaranteed super funtime hangout session. I am really glad that I still have Peng in my life helping me out and supporting me constantly, she's sweet!

Work has been fine I guess, I still work at a warehouse. It's odd but I am in a really unique position there. I am the only person that doesn't have a set department, I bounce around working for various different managers doing different things daily. Though recently one latched onto me because she liked my work ethic and my thoroughness. What this turned into was her having me be the person to do a complete audit of all her aisles of the warehouse which also means driving around on a 'Skyjack'. A Skyjack is a platform on wheels that drives around herky jerkily with this totally non-human-style controls. You push forward AND pull a trigger and then you lunge forward making this loud high pitch electric motor sound and a beeeep-beeeeep-beeeeep. The steering is so odd. There are two tabs at your thumb, one for each direction, which is strange enough, but they add to it by having the wheels not return to center after turning. So you have to be really active and confident swinging it around and into the aisles. It really lurches and jerks and makes embarrassing noises if you don't drive it smooth and just swoop in where you need to go so I have had to learn to drive it confidently.

So with having to totally audit her shit I get to drive this thing around quite alot now and that's kinda fun I guess. I get to be like 50 feet in the air on this swaying platform regularly.

Gah, I have to get to bed.

I shaved my head and mustache last night.

Oh yah, and today I was biking to work in the freezing rain and I was like halfway when I decided to give up because I was totally soaked and it'd be retarded to show up to work all drenched. And nobody likes to drive me at that time of day so I called in to the temp agency saying I couldn't make it into work and went back to bed.

So every day I work from 7:30 AM - 4 PM (at least) and then most days of the week I have a regular event scheduled. Mondays and Saturdays are the only totally free days. hahah When exactly do I have time to do anything like stitch or breath? Never, that's when, haha.

I am having fun though, but I for sure can't keep this pace up forever. Taking today off was to give me a chance to catch up on several things that needed doing so it was worth it so long as I didn't get fired.

Night modified.

Also! I play footbag. :P :)

Footbag club was fun tonight, we all hit several tricks!

I think my most fun was paradon>merkon rpt.

I was killlling it with some strings. I am playing in lavers laced like normal shoes and having fun!

I have a big day of work then flipping at the gym with Peng tomorrow! yay!

I've been looking forward to this all week! I think we are gonna warm up with some footbag! hehe

Here are a few videos that were made to support the tricking community (like, flipping and shit) by this guy that goes by Dogen. They have some REALLY useful info for footbag too though.

One on muscle memory:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8MX5K5lvI4Q

Great ankle strengthening stuff:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8B1XvEbJUKE

He's pretty cool and very talented and I am quite impressed by his enthusiasm and level of support for that community. He's like what I'd be if I wasn't so ADD or quite so busy.

It's pretty interesting stuff.

If you want to see something else that is really cool check this out:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=bsg1Xak07jI

It's how to turn horizontal momentum into vertical to really get crazy air.

omg, awesome stuff. i watched a few videos of "tricking". that is just insane. :)
the videos about ankle strength and muscle memory were super well made, and i think its also good to know for footbag. from now on i will only play 30 min a day and do every trick only 6 times. :)

thanks for posting that tom

So I just got home from gymnastics class. ....

I have achieved a life long goal, a goal that has haunted and taunted me for years.

I have now successfully hit a standing back tuck, the trick that I have had recurring dreams of for years. :D :D :D I wonder what I will dream of tonight.

Gym class with pengpeng tonight was great actually! The meeting was run by a different member of Team Ryouko tonight, but he was cool too. The warm up was totally different and INTENSELY HARD!!!! Holy crap, I need to get stronger!

Both Peng and I were working on our running front tucks. I have hit them in the past so it didn't take me long to get the hang of em and I was even trying to hit front tuck>front tuck with the second one onto a mat for it's sketchiness. The mat was there for people like Pengpeng to learn to huck their bodies into the air. I was really proud of her when after trying the front tuck a few times and she got discouraged and then after I talked to her a bit more about the physics she stepped back up and tried a whole bunch more and made a bunch of progress on her form.

Go Pengpeng! :)

I did some fun run>180>back tuck onto mat, as like a combo not a fat trick. THOUGH there were some INSANE people flying through the air doing amazing tricks. This one kid, a highschooler with shaggy hair who you'd never expect to be able to explode like this, could do giant gainer fulls, which is a forwards moving backflip with a full twist. They run in carve this J shape and then hurl one kicking leg up and then just take flight and spin and flip in incredible ways. They are all so strong too!!

Anyways, I sorta pulled a lower abdominal muscle last night/today at work doing roundoffs without fully warmed and prepared muscles and it's been really sensitive all day. So at gym it really held me back since with every tuck you engage ALL your abs all my attempts at everything were unfortunately tinged with pain. I hope I didn't like.. tear instead of just pull. I am gonna go take a hot hot bath like peng recomended. With epsom salts if I can find some.

Night modified!

Oh yeah!!
there is more too actually. Peng and I shredded a bit and some of the people freaked! haha

HHOOOOOOOOLLLLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!

I just had the most nuts idea!!!!!! I wonder if it is revolutionary???

Check this out..

So obviously the thought of incorporating footbag with acrobatics has interested me.

Today Peng and I played a bit on the blue gym floor with like.. mostly just some cushioning, not like springs and shit, that is a different surface that also intrigues me that they also have there. I think it was just one dense 2 - 3 cm thick layer over top of carpeted cement. Anyways, that amount of cushioning is enough for tumbling and all gymnastic type stuff BUT! It's also sturdy enough to shred confidently on....

I guess by now you may see where I am going with this.

This type of thing, or maybe one of the fun alternatives may wind up being a major contributor to the progression of this weird niche that appears to be developing. In fact, at world's Vasek and I were doing lots of gymnastic-y goofing off.

I also had another thought, there is a trampoline that is like.. toit. It is pretty rad for hucking flips with like.. half effort, also, it gives you a nice crisp bounce off not much effort. What if I try to have a stall, sproing, triple around the world, catch and land one footed. And then from there I go for quadruple eggbeater and get it on tape.

Anyways, I am going to start trying alot more footbag stuff once I get more confident around the gym, I have only been back at it for 2 sessions so I have to go slowly.

I want to get a crash pad SO BAD!!

Peeeeeeng? Help!!

I need a mat to flip onto! I promise I won't break my neck!!!*

*Unfortunately I cannot actually promise that, I wind up upside down flying through the air too darn much of the time!

Oh yeah, another highlight was nailing this trick called sideflip where you charge up, stomp your feet turned 90 degrees from your motion and then sproing up hiiiigh and then tuck and roll sideways and then come down sorta backwardsish. We were all trying it over some 4-5 foot tall block things, too many people were rolling across the top instead of really committing. I cleared it lots of times and then even did it on the floor without the block or mat to land on.

My next goal is back tuck on the floor instead of on a mat. The 3 that I hit (yes, I nailed it thrice!) were standing on mats of different densities. First was on a pretty soft 5 inch thick one with two guys at my sides. I was always afraid to just step up, but this week I watched sooooo many tutorials on how to do all this shit that this week I was so pumped and I was nailing everything.

Anyways, bath time! hahah what the fuuuck? didn't I say 'goodnight modified' like.. eight months ago? :P

PPS I hit a lot of footbag tricks recently that I am happy about! Lots of old drills have come back to the forefront to get more attention. I can do lots of spinny and shuffly stuff now. All in crisp new-ish-though-getting-nice lavers laced like normal human style shoes.

Oh yeah and Pengpeng was looking SO good with her shred!!!

Her pixies are SO confident, it's crazy! She's got mirages down and clippers are getting nice and strong, go little girl!!!

I have always told her that if she commits to it and puts in the time then she will make progress and it's come true!

:D :D

I am very pride of you Peng.

haha, the moment i saw the one video, i think it was the calf strenght video, i thought "dude, he does like crazy flips, and one leg is allmost the whole time streched out and never touches the ground. so he could do a toe stalls then gain airtime and do a crazy flipthing with the bag on the toe"...no shit... :D tom, you may remember, last year in berlin we were talking shit about doin backflips after a set and then catch the bag again...you can do it!!! its not shit any longer, you can do it, i know! :)

haaaahahah, this damn hook gets stuck in my head ALL THE TIME. I was singing it constantly when we went to Ithaca and it usually comes to mind at least once a day and sticks around looping for a while.

I don't even know the name of the song, it's currently popular I think. haha

I slept sooooo well! I slept until 2:45 PM when Lotus was scratching at my door, totally crashing my dreamland fun! haha Lots of dreams too, though none of backflips that I can remember . I went to bed at like.. 3 AM after writing a lot in here and then having a nice long bath with lots of epsom salts.
After my bath I rinsed off the salty water with a blast of COLD COLD water from the shower. I did something I think I am going to be doing alot more, I just let go and did it! It was what I had to do to get into the hot water for the bath and to commit to going for the standing back tuck. hahah, yesterday was full of life and learning.

I didn't even go into the plight I went through to just get to the gym. It wasn't too hard, just quite cold.

I got off work at 4 PM and my parents were there waiting to pick me up. Most days I bike to work, a process I both love and hate. It takes a lot of effort to get up at 6 and be at work for 7:30 all fueled up and ready to work considering the 7 KM uphill bike ride that I must overcome every weekday morning!

So now add to it the fun extra dimension that it gets cold in the winter and I have to have enough time to do all my food making (breakfast and lunch), brush my teeth and then get wrapped up in longjohns, pants, MEC shell pants, some shirts and a hoodie and either Diesel-Train (my leather jacket) or my yellow MEC rainjacket with reflectos on the arms. And then of course a toque and a pair of gloves and my cycling gloves. Great. What a fun start to my morning, plating my self with armor.
The other day was the first day with snow during the ride. The last 1.5 KM I was being pelted straight in my face with hail! hahah ow! owww! nostril, fuck! ow!

Aaaaanyways, this day I got a ride to work in the morning from my sister for doing some thing for her the day prior. haha this means waking her up seeeveral times from around 6:55 to 7:08, though we have to be out the door by 7:15, haha.

I worked my shift, a thing I dislike in decreasing amounts. It's kinda fun there! Lately I spend a lot of my time driving around on the Skyjack which is like a video game so that's fine. I just work hard and do my job and be nice to people and they like me a bunch.

So normally I would ride home down the 7 KM back to my house, which is quite fun! Occasionally I will stop by Liam's house which is about halfway and say hello.

But Friday the plan was for me to be picked up and taken straight to the train station to catch the 4:38 GO train to Toronto's Union Station.

We did this and I grabbed some cash from the machino to be able to pay pengpeng back the $60 I had gotten for selling bags of hers. She sometimes gives me piles of footbags and tells me to sell them to people and I do. haha

My club is hooked up with Pengs!

I caught my train no problem and slept most of the way there. I had brought my stitching kit just in case I felt motivated to stitch a bit, but I didn't. Maybe soon! I haven't really stitched anything since camp wakahakee.

The subway station at Union was nuuuts! haha, it's often quite busy but this time I was there during rush hour and there were people and streams of people flying everywhere! It was kinda fun though. There are so many people that catch your eye and you may want another look but they are gone forever in a flash just like every other person you see.

I was smart and had a $10 bill ready and went straight to one of the automatic machines instead of waiting in the looong dumb lineups that always pile up there because they are unbelievably inefficient. I got my tokens and change and went right in, lickety split! I knew I was supposed to call Peng when I was at Union, but I shoulda done it before I went into the subway area because I got no reception in there. I called her from a payphone, I think it's crazy they changed the price from $25 to $50 recently. But then again, the $25 thing was from a loooong time ago. Though... now the canadian dollar is so strong I wonder where I should really sit. In Germany the phone limited how long you could use it and you had to keep feeding it change to keep talking.

I got to the top of the yellow line, Finch station in fine time.
Riding the subway is fun, you get to sit in proximity to a changing procession of really weird characters. I like to think about their lives, I feel like it deepens my catalog of mental notes on humanity.

Peng was stuck in traffic and was going to take a while getting to me, when she got close-ish I went to wait outside. It turned out that I wound up waiting like.. 30-45 minutes outside in the -8C k-k-k-k-k-k-k-k-k-k-k-k-k-k cooold. I waited in this elevator at the pickup/dropoff place, sometimes the elevator would get summoned by someone downstairs and I'd go for a ride down, some old asian lady would get on and then we'd ride up. hehe

So Peng showed up and then we went to flip and it was the best!

Peng even brought me food so that I wouldn't be cranky, since normally I have dinner right around then and I'd just worked an 8 hour shift. Also, I didn't have any appropriate pants/shorts to wear for tricking so I asked Peng if she did. She didn't but she was willing to grab me a pair from asialand (not a real place just what I am calling all the asian stores in her area of town) she got me a sweet black pair that worked out perfectly.

These are the ways that Peng helps me so much. She's really awesome. I've been super appreciating her lately, she has been a really great friend to me, I love that little girl! :D

Bwaaaaaaaahahahahahah haaaaaaaaaahahhaah

I laughed for so long when I saw that picture!!

Peng determined that she was 4 in that picture, but that's like.. exactly what she looks like now. hahaha SO cute!

I am kinda sad that nobody was all excited I hit my first back tucks. Especially since I consider that to be my biggest highlight of anything I've done in years.

I guess this blog is supposed to be about footbag, but whatever, it's about ME and I do lots of things, sometimes even play footbag.

In fact, I've been playing lots lately.

I can spin and it's the best. :)

I read your blog here and there when I have the time. I love to read about all of your little activities. I always want to play, too, but I know I'd never have the time for now. Good job with the back tuck. I know it's gotta be hard if I try it on the trampoline and still haven't really hit it. I subconsciously get scared everytime I try and end up doing some kind of diagonal-back, arial, twisty thing no matter how hard I think about the physics and stuff.

I have also realized this recently. And after I did I watched "Peaceful Warrior" and it opened up my mind even more.

Thanks for all the supportive comments friends!

Chad - that stuff about just committing is totally my everything now. And you know what? It's allowed me to get over so many walls that have previously blocked my path.

Chrissy - go on youtube and learn how to do proper back flips/tucks and think about it in the way you'd learn some footbag trick. Build up to it slowly learning all the components (jumping, tucking into a ball and landing) and then when you are ready just commit! If you half ass anything you totally remove any chance of actually learning that thing. Just go for it and get over that fear!

Holly - Perfect use of eh!

Sam - I am completely intending on going for it with hackrobatics. Also, best. name. ever. You should look into any local gymnastics facilities in wherever you're living now, Seattle? I am suuuure you could find some legit place that runs adult classes or even something sorta informal like what I have found. It'll allow you to really learn the important concepts and develop muscles and skills in a safe environment with other cool interesting people down with flipping.

Asmus - you were actually the most excited person to reply of all! You sent me a stoked message on msn congratulating me, it made me really happy!

Tonight was gymnastics and it was sweet.

My pulled abdominal muscles, which have been quite painful though decreasing, had been feeling great up until somewhere through the warm-up stuff when we did jumping pikes. It's basically just folding in half forwards in the air. Well, on the first one I felt a really bad and sadly familiar twinge of pain. I think I re-pulled it to some degree and it kinda bummed me out and took some of the fun out of the remaining stuff I did.

That said, I still had lots of fun!!!!

Getting there was easy, I got to drive and even with the traffic I got there before the stuff had started, though I still didn't have time to eat the tasty dinner Pengpeng had gotten for me. Though like, the distance I was covering only takes about a half hour to drive if there is no traffic and it took me just under 2 hours, but it's worth it!

I hit WALL FLIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's where you run up to a wall and plant a foot then backflip off. You learn em on a sorta wedge thing against the wall with a mat at the bottom. I wound up doing probably 50 one plant wall flips and even 10 ish TWO plant wall flips! By that I mean that I do two steps up the wall instead of one.

Some guys were nuts though, one guy could run up the wedge then several steps up the bare wall THEN arch his backflip back to the ground.

Also, they can do sooooo many variations on it. I think the craziest one I saw was run>plant>360>plant>backflip!!

And I even tried out the toit trampoline with the footbag!!

I did a bunch of attempts at standing backflip toe stall trying to land one footed to nail the stall. I footed it basically every time, the bag just stays on your foot!!

And I was using this pretty new Peng bag that is somehow like.. godly in such a short amount of time! (Buy Peng footbags!! I have 3 sitting in front of me, if you PM me and give me some money they can be yours!!)

I tried a few attempts at crazy multidex stuff but its so hard to get a clean set. I need to go to the basics and learn to mega set cleanly! haha

Peng also hit her first front flip! yay!

After gym I came home since it was my mom's birthday. I was gonna stay and hangout with Peng, but instead we planned to get together tomorrow to shred.

Also, I think it's cool that Peng is so keen to show off footbag! At gymnastics she breaks out footbag as a warm-up (a thing I am going to get into with her also) and people wow and oooh and ahh at her tricks! Go Pengpeng! She has stuff like pixie and mirage down well enough to do them when crowds are watching, that's an important skill! hehe

I took a bath with epsom salts to help my sore muscles, especially my sore lower abs that I pulled.

I guess I stayed in pretty long, I was very pruned... what happened next was probably the scariest thing that's happened to me in a very long time. People that have read this far get the real meat of the story.

I had started the bath in a sitting position stretching my hammies a bit. Near the end of the bath I layed on my stomach for a while to get my sorest muscles most underwater. When I felt done enough I let the water drain out while laying tummy down in the last of the water as it drained away. I got up and turned on the shower to rinse off the salty water, let the temperature adjust and got in.

Not long after that I started feeling funny.. off.. I couldn't put my finger on it but I knew I needed out of the shower. I figured I was probably dehydrated from working out so hard and also probably to some degree the salty bath. Anyways, I got some cool water in a glass and drank it back. I poured a second and began to drank.. then shit went all weird.

I had to sit down, so totally naked, completely soaked I just sat on the closed toilet lid with my water glass in hand watching as something about my vision changed. I could see like.. an overlay, it's hard to describe.

Anyways next I recognized that I needed out of the washroom and straight to a laying position in my room close-by. I clumsily wrapped a towel around my waist and grabbed my water and headed for my room. Things got hazier and halfway down the 8 foot stretch of hallway I got scared and hazarded a guess that perhaps I was about to faint or black out, oh fuck!

A few steps later a full on black out was setting in on me!! shit! I have never experienced this before in my life so I didn't know what was going on. I made it into my room (remember, this is all like only a handful of steps so we are going at like super slow motion with the story here) and by then I couldn't see anything, totally blind. My brain started to lose logic and memory functions, I knew I had to put down my glass and started thrusting down with it. I couldn't even remember the orientation of my room by then. I was so confused and and sorta scared as I blindly fought to find a surface to put my glass down on as my legs were starting to not work and I really had no idea where anything was or even like.. if I had a desk.

It was fucked!! I managed to swing my hand into my desk chair which allowed me to locate my desk, put the glass down and then half stumble half crumple over and onto my bed.

I stayed in a face down heap for 20 minutes as my vision and brain slowly came back to me. I did a run through of all the things that I've currently got bouncing around in my head, it was all there fortunately. I also ran a check of all my motor functions, still working fine.

So I guess I almost blacked out or fainted or whatever.

I think the most striking part for me was that throughout that whole thing, going blind, not having a brain and losing my motor functions partially, I managed to stay one level/step removed from the situation in my head. I was able to pilot my body through this scary ordeal and aim me safely over to my bed to recover. Cool!

I am so glad that didn't go worse than it did.

Anyways, I am fine and I am soooooo excited to do wall flips off everything!!

I need a slightly slanty tree, lets do this!!

Oh and I also tried something I was scared of tonight. I attempted a back tuck on the gym floor, instead of on a mat. I only did one try because any strong tucking motion (which means basically all flips :( ) hurts me so bad.

I better go get some sleep, I've got shred with Pengpeng tomorrow, yay!

It means alot to me if you've managed to read everything all the way to the end.

hey tom, thats really scarey!!!

something of that sort happens to me quite often. for me, its when i stand up too quickly or get too hot and stand up. what happens with me is everything starts going black and i lose balance... i immediately sit down wherever im at. have your ears ever popped and then you suddenly feel like the ground is moving beneth you? ear popping can break off your equilibrium, so maybe its something to do with ears? i remember on the plane flight down to florida, my ears popped... it felt good for a second... then all the sudden my vision went black and i felt like i was falling out of my seat because the plane was spiraling! i gained my vision and balance back in a few seconds, and asked brian if the plane was moving like that, or if it was just me. well, it wasnt the plane.

im not sure what might have happened to you, but maybe it had to do with hot water, laying on your tummy in hot water, then standing up too fast?

Hey Mosh,

You've inspired me man.

And hey, if it makes you feel better I've gotten that dizzy/blind/fainty feeling a handful of times before. It's usually at the sight of my own blood, cuz I'm queasy that way. You saw crazy red dots and blobs and stuff, yeah? It's really rare -- wouldn't worry about it.
