bleed holes

l was wondering what bleed holes esstentually are and how important they are for making bags.

When you sew a 32, you have to sew 5 hexes on 1 pent.
There are points, where the sides of two hexes touch each other.

normally, you don't sew them together, so you can fill (or refill) the bag through this holes, by using a straw.
That's a bleedhole!!!

they are pretty important for a bag. Lets say if you bought a bag and didn't like its weight and or what was in it. You would then insert a straw, withdraw the filler already inide it and insert a filler of your choice. Without the bleedhole you would have to cut open a bag to replce the filler or just leave it the way it is.

It basically allows a bag's weight and fill to be customized and changable.

In an aesthetic pov, the bleedhole is easily the most common area to mess up in sewing a 32. You might get some folded or wrinkled areas on a bleed hole if that area is not sewn evenly throughout the 32.

This area can also cause deficiencies and unevenness for bag break-in.

Also, this area can be primary to how round a bag can be. Small hexes and bleedholes and large pents would result in a more stiff and rounder bag, while the opposite could become more floppy and loose. This is depending on how you stitch, of course.

There are more variables to the last claim, but I think the end result is still pretty consistent in a way.

do you leave all the hex points bleed hole or just a few and this might sound stupid but.........if you have bleed holes wouldn't your bag leak?

Essentially, all the "corner areas" of the hexagons are bleed holes. So, really, each bleed hole is usable to some extent.

However, if you sew really loose, or your template is really large on the bleedhole portion of the hexagon, there is a risk of your bag leaking. If you're careful and take in consideration this factor in sewing a 32 (or even bags like it, like the 14 panel or 26 panel), you won't undergo this pitfall.

I had really leaky bleed holes until I learned to stitch hex-to-hex. Like, unbearably leaky.

But luckily i found out how to make them stop hemeraging.

my bleed holes dont bleed unless you stick a straw in it.

blees holes arent necessary though, you just wont be able to add/remove filler easily.
