I personally think BAP is a great thing and a real motivator for people to get better, and if you really have that much of an issue with it, maybe take a deep breath and forget about it?

I essentially agree with Habitat. I think BAP is no longer necessary and it detracts from promoting footbag as a sport, while actively promoting it as a hobby. That is it promotes getting really good at the non-competitive aspect of footbag. I'm sure some people like the non-competitive aspect to footbag and will say that it should be promoted, but that's missing the point, which is that BAP turns the non-competitive part of footbag into a competition. It makes the actual competitions less significant and that makes footbag less of a sport. In fact BAP grew from people saying; "we don't like the competitions, we just want to be as good as we can be," which was an important development for the sport at the time, but not something that is helping the sport at all any more.

I think the complete unofficialness of it, and the way the top people in BAP change the rules to suit themselves (for example a few years ago they increased the percentage of support a person needs to get into BAP specifically to keep out a particular person, who had received enough votes from BAP members to get in, but the "top" BAP people didn't like the decision) really brings the credibility of both BAP and footbag down.

I know this is going to be massively unpopular statement, but based purely on the footage I've seen, I also find it rather offensive and sexist that girls have been inducted into BAP when they clearly have lower skill levels than some guys who are not. The idea that standards of excellence are dependent on gender isn't something that I approve of, especially in a sport like footbag where I don't think gender is a massive disadvantage like it is in some other sports (like rugby union). Again this comes down to the lack of any integrity in the selection process.

I don't think people should aspire to get into BAP and I think it's time that BAP stopped inducting people into the group. It was a very important for the development of freestyle footbag, but really it was those initial members who were important, and I'm sure they would have kept their same attitude and done as much for the sport if they hadn't decided to form their elite club.

Of course as Ian pointed out, it is a fairly trivial matter, and becoming more and more trivial as the sport grows. It's probably going to die within the next 15 years anyway, so it's not something I concern myself about much.

I still think the "be the best I can be for my owns sake" is the best thing about footbag.

Jesus, people make such a big deal out of BAP. Personally, at the time I was playing it was at the point where ALL the good players we're in BAP, so in my mind, it was the equivalent of the NBA, or the NHL, or whatever.

It's REALLY hard to get in the Hall-of-Fame, so it's almost like a poor-man's Hall of Fame. For the Shredders, by the Shredders.

I wanted to get in to prove to MYSELF that I could do it, and I personally felt honored that most of my footbag heros thought I was good enough to get in, so there's been no negative connotations for me.

So it's a popular-people club. So what? Noone's forcing people to join. So it's elitist. So fucking what? If it's not important to you don't bother having an opinion, that's the true definition of "not caring".

I don't know about some of the BAP members, but it seems a lot more relaxed from what I've seen. Most of the BAP members are really cool guys who don't seem elitist in the way that you are pointing out.

But then again that could be my uninformed point of view
