Sand?

i was wondering why no one uses sand in there bags.
i love the feel of sand.
is there disadvantages of sand?

you have to set the stitches very closely to each other or the sand will pour out.
I think you have to do that with a sewing-machine.

I don't like to play with sand bags, but I think a sand+metall bag could be good!!!

Sand leaks out of the bag. No matter how tight you stitch, it'll leak. Plus sand doesn't help the bag keep it's form in the air.

I've made hundreds and hundreds of sand bags (4 & 8 panels) over the past 3 years and have never had a problem with leakage. On the 4 panels I backstitch (tightly!), and on the 8's I just use a tightly spaced running stitch with significant gather and flanges.
I actually have a 4 panel sandbag I made over 1 1/2 years ago that Ive never had to refill... That's not to say they have zero leakage, just not a significant amount, especially with larger grained sands.
Sandbags are nice because they stall easily and flatten out like nobodies business.

sand is also very abbrasive, or so i would think. Has anyone had hole problems with sand filled bags?

never have but i did have a hole promblem with lead i was using in a 32. but then again it wasnt all round lead. it was like the rejected pieces of lead not worthy to be shot out of a gun lol

I've never had any holes or leaking problems whenever I make sandbags. It's only during the refill process do I develop holes, since it's that time which you have to force open a bleedhole in order to refill.

I had a bag made by nick landes that had sand along with lead(or steel can't remember) and like poly pellets maybe n just regular filler and there was no problem. It was actually my favorite bag I've ever had.

Sand added with some metal for weight makes good bags. I used to do them before moving to 32s. Some hints for making a sandbag less leaking is to stitch really small stitches and to put enough of gather. Also filtering the most biggest and smallest sand(almost dust) particles away enhances playability, because rocks take too much space and dust goes through fabric. This of course depends of fabric also.

On the other hand doing this many stitches makes crafting a bag really time consuming. For example there is more stitches on 12-panel sandbag than in the traditional 32-panel bags.

True, but I never used facile to make sandbags. For sandies I think it´s best to use fabric that is already really soft, so you can cycle around that problem. This way the bag is playable "right from the box". And the seams do loose little after some playing, making the bag even better.

All in all I think sandbags are overally ok but still loses to well made 32s. But now I have a huge desire to make one sandbag, just to remind myself of those times

I sell about 7 of these a day:

Tight stitching, large flanges, but so soft that it's almost cheating.

I just made a four panel sand/lead bag and i love it sooooo much. It's so soft it's awesome. I didn't use facile though, i used some crappy fabric store fabric, but it works so well so barefoot shred, and shoe shred, and it sets really nice. Though i don't know how to blind stitch, so there are little tassel like things coming out of both ends where all four panels meet. But so far no leakage.

I have never stitched before and would like to start so i can have a new bag almost whenever i want . But my question is if there is a template for a Mr. Sandbag sized 4 panel or just golfball size?
